Poll: Iowans Not Concerned With Marriage

A survey by the Des Moines Register found that Iowa residents would much rather ban texting while driving than gay marriage in the Midwestern state.
The Register found that regulation of distracted driving was a high priority for 72% of respondents while only 36% thought that regulating marriage should be an immediate focus of lawmakers.

So, not knowing much about each state's position on this, I checked....

As I understand it....

States allowing gay marriage: 5
Iowa, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire (and also pending in District of Columbia)

States allowing civil unions, domestic partnerships, or other benefits: 10
California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Colorado, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Maryland, Maine, Hawaii

States with no legislation or no amendments banning gay marriage: 3
New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island

States with statutes or amendments banning gay marriage: 32
Alaska, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Delaware

It would be interesting to know if any efforts are underway to pass anything in all these states - even a limited form of union or partnership would be better than the non-existent rights they have at the moment.

^^^The actual number of states with bans is 41. New York, Rhode Island, New Mexico, and New Jersey all do not have statute or constitutional bans on same sex marriage.

Also, efforts for marriage equality are very much underway in New York. With Cuamo announcing candidacy for governor in March (he is blowing away everyone at the polls) and the census results to come in (the Dems are expected to pick up 10 seats in the senate), it will likely happen next year.

^^^R.T. Rybeck will likely be the next governor of Minnesota. He is a supporter of marriage equality. Coupled with the fact that our House and Senate have 68% and 64% Democratic majorities and there is a very good chance of passing marriage equality when he enters office.

The NYS Senate deep-sixed the legalization this session.
The governor tried hard. Unfortunately, as they have done with looking in the mirror and making the hard budgetary decisions - NOT - his own party members are jumping ship on the subject at the moment.

It's incredible - they refuse to balance the budget, then point the finger of blame at Patterson - and the State Unions spend a not so small fortune telling us all how wonderful and fully needed/underappreciated they are, instead of recognizing the realities of our current economy and biting the fucking bullet.

They all need to have their backsides filled up with "reality check" stimulating lubricant, so maybe the shit that's backed all the way up to between their fucking ears can finally get cleaned out.

Other than that, life is a dream here in the Empire State.

Four Iowa Democratic Senators Join Republicans to Push for Gay Marriage Ban

Dennis Black: http://www.senate.iowa.gov/black/contact.htm

Rich Olive: http://www.senate.iowa.gov/olive/contact.htm
Joe Seng: http://www.senate.iowa.gov/seng/contact.htm

But with last week marking the first self-imposed legislative “funnel week” deadline for bills to clear committee to stay eligible for consideration this year, the marriage amendment is officially dead, at least in this form.

What's Your Instinct: North Charleston's Uncomfortable Grand Marshal
Mayor Summey accepted the honor on account that he represents the entire city, not just the straights (which is admirable), but ruined the sentiment when he expanded on the occasion.
“This is not in any way saying that I am supportive of their lifestyle,” the mayor remarked when further explaining his decision to marshal in the city’s gays.

Will Texas' first gay divorce open the state to gay marriage?
A Texas judge's decision to grant a divorce to a gay couple could open the door to same-sex marriages in the state.

- Imagine the possibility that texas could have gay marriage before NY and CA.

NH Lawmakers reject gay marriage repeal

The House voted by a wide margin, 201-135, against a constitutional amendment that defined marriage as between one man and one woman. It later defeated a proposed repeal of the state's new marriage, 210-109.

California’s Gay-Marriage Breakdown

The great recession may be to blame for stirring up the culture wars: according to a study in the winter issue of the American Sociological Review, resistance to gay marriage deepens significantly during hard times. In conservative parts of the 30 states that have blocked same-sex unions (where ballot measures tend to be won or lost), researchers found that each 10 percent drop in homeownership led to a 5 percent increase in support for a ban.

^^^I heard about MN. So happy for my state! While nothing will be voted on right now, the next likely governor is a supporter of marriage equality. It will pass no problem in the legislature, where the Democrats have 65% and 69% majorities.

Are you sure they'll be able to sustain those majorities with the upcoming elections? I'd be a bit worrisome if it gets under 60% - we saw in New Jersey how a craven few can totally ruin things.

The Minnesota Legislature is MUCH bigger then the one in New Jersey. The House has 134 members and the Senate has 67. While the Republicans are expected to gain a few seats in both after the Census redistricting, it will not drop below 60%.

^^^That is good news for Perry v Schwarzenegger, since he's thought to be a wild card.

PA: Senate votes down marriage amendment bill

The Pennsylvania Senate Judiciary Committee today voted against legislation to amend the state constitution to ban same sex marriage. The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania hailed the vote as a victory for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community in the commonwealth.
