What is it with some gay men and their dogs?
And I don't mean the average gay guy who has a dog or two.
I mean the complete opposite of the crazy cat lady from the Simpsons
I had the opportunity to meet a man who lived in a mansion who's sole companions were five Spanish cocker spaniels.
On his wall were pictures of his dogs. Above his fireplace was a large portrait of his oldest dog. And on his dresser were numerous pictures of his dogs in play.
Not a single picture of a human being....
He treats the dogs as if they were actual persons. He talks to them as if they're going to respond. He scolds them as if they were ruly children. He even has a large den area dedicated to them so they have a bed (Yes, BED) to sleep in.
It's not the first time I've experienced this type of behavior.
I've seen it with young gay men and their portable puppies they take everywhere and older gay men who have large families of dogs.
I don't have anything against them but my natural curiosity to understand people compels me to understand why some gay men have extremely close (borderline obsessive) relationships with their dogs.
Is it loneliness? Loneliness is one of the biggest fears of gay men. They fear they won't find a suitable boyfriend to spend their life with. And for some gay men it turns out to be true. Do they use the dog as an outlet of love and affection they wish they had from a mate?
Is it the need for children? Like women and their cats, some gay men often treat their dogs as if they were children of their own.
Is it need for affection? Another hazard of the gay community is the lack of affection one can receive. A dog gives unending affection regardless of the time or day.
What do you think?
