What is it with some gay men and their dogs?

And I don't mean the average gay guy who has a dog or two.

I mean the complete opposite of the crazy cat lady from the Simpsons

I had the opportunity to meet a man who lived in a mansion who's sole companions were five Spanish cocker spaniels.

On his wall were pictures of his dogs. Above his fireplace was a large portrait of his oldest dog. And on his dresser were numerous pictures of his dogs in play.

Not a single picture of a human being....

He treats the dogs as if they were actual persons. He talks to them as if they're going to respond. He scolds them as if they were ruly children. He even has a large den area dedicated to them so they have a bed (Yes, BED) to sleep in.

It's not the first time I've experienced this type of behavior.

I've seen it with young gay men and their portable puppies they take everywhere and older gay men who have large families of dogs.

I don't have anything against them but my natural curiosity to understand people compels me to understand why some gay men have extremely close (borderline obsessive) relationships with their dogs.

Is it loneliness? Loneliness is one of the biggest fears of gay men. They fear they won't find a suitable boyfriend to spend their life with. And for some gay men it turns out to be true. Do they use the dog as an outlet of love and affection they wish they had from a mate?

Is it the need for children? Like women and their cats, some gay men often treat their dogs as if they were children of their own.

Is it need for affection? Another hazard of the gay community is the lack of affection one can receive. A dog gives unending affection regardless of the time or day.

What do you think? #-o

I've never noticed any correlation with any of my gay friends... I notice the opposite... no pets whatsoever. Like me, probably all too self-involved to own pets.

I don't know any gay men with dogs. I know a few lesbians with dogs who treat them as if they love them but wouldn't say they were obsessed with them.

Cats on the other hand....... Yeah i'm a little guilty about treating my cat like a baby sometimes. But she's old and deserves a lot of kisses and love.

............although I am friendly to them whenever I am around dogs and wish them no harm............I don't care much for dogs............

............also seems to me that dogs are not only pets to some but are used by others as protection, bred, taught and trained by some to do harm, by others--dogs are used as a protector, by others as hunting tools, still again by others as food sources, and still yet as zoo exhibits for others............a very versatile animal as opposed to a hippopotamus............

Sheesh. My dog is a really good friend. I have pictures of him. I talk to him. So why all of the sudden after reading the original post do I feel like a diseased gay freak who has committed some type of crime against society?

My dog turned 11 yesterday, and I really love him. I've lived with my dog for one half of my life (I'm 22), it's going to be so awkward when he dies.

Hm maybe it just your luck you are meeting these guys. I can wholeheartedly say that I've never met a gay guy with an obscene amount of dogs to be called the equivalent of a crazy cat lady haha.

But I do treat my one and only dog like my child because she obviously is. She is dependent of me and I've had her since I was 7 and she has always been like a guardian angel in my eyes.

Yeah that day is going to be tough but I bet you've given him the best possible life he'll ever have while he's here. I can totally relate as my cat feels like part of the family, the same as my mums cats as they've always been around it''s hard to imagine life without them.

Perhaps it's because dogs and cats don't judge us continuously, like much of society can...

what a load of hooey.

We're guys.

My partner and I have four cats; we're down one since Buddy died.

We love them a great deal. They are not the only focus of our lives but each one is a personality and precious part of our home circle.

What's so hard to understand?

I'm immediately suspicious of and put off by people who don't have or like animals.

May as well bring out the huge paint brushes then...

If a gay man has cats or dogs, and lavishes them with attention...well, it's because gay men take solace in lesser species because they're incapable of forming true bonds with humans.

If a gay man has cats or dogs, and doesn't lavish them with attention...well, it's because gay men are heartless and think of these living creatures as nothing more than living ornaments for their show-off homes.

If a gay man has animals other than cats or dogs...well, it's because gay men have a need to constantly be the center of attention, and are hoping their "quirky pets" will warrant them a few extra looks.

If a gay man has no pets at all...well, it's because gay men are hedonists, and refuse to put the minimal work of taking care of a pet in order to reap the benefits.

...there, that covers everything.

That's interesting, the whole gay men and their obsession with dogs. I never thought about it before. I have a dog. However, one of my favorite places in the world is Provincetown, Mass. There are always guys and girls walking their dogs down Commercial St., lots of them. But, there are also, not one, but two very popular doggie stores on Commercial St. One bookstore (new books), but two dog stores that sell everything for every breed. Funny.
