Gay Men, Comic Books, and Geeking Out

I loved 52 and Countdown too!! I only read a few issues of Trinity and had to stop because of school.

Looks like Wonder Woman is dead for now. They are having all kinds of issues with her. So, I just TRIED to read the Trinity trades. Wow, those were really really bad. I was shocked. DC did great with 52 and Countdown was good in my opinion. But Trinity was awful. DC needs to stop these big events. Does Marvel still do the big events? DC I am up on but Marvel not so much. I know Marvel just did the whole Skrull thing.

If you want to read Wonder Woman stories check out the stories written by George Perez, Phil Jiminez, Greg Rucka or Gail Simone. Those are the best.

Marvel finished with the skrull thing three years ago. They've got a new event this year called "Fear Itself".

Do not check out Gail Simone. She fucked Wonder Woman up! Awful! I have all the Wonder Woman trades. The first 4 Perez trades are worth a read. They are very good. I wish they would have done Jiminez whole run in trade. He did some great stuff with her. Rucka's run was not bad. I wasn't a fan of the art and the whole diplomat thing. My all time fav run was started in issue 288 of the first series. That's the issue that introduced the W on her costume. That was the best run. It was the run that introduced Silver Swan. Those were dark issues. Very well written and drawn. Love to see those in trade. I have a lot of her first run in boxes.

Speaking of Wonder Woman, did everyone hear the news?

NBC Orders Wonder Woman Pilot

Just two weeks ago it looked like Warner Bros. Television’s planned Wonder Woman revival had stalled after David E. Kelley’s script failed to find a home at a network. But tonight Deadline reports the surprise news that NBC has picked up the pilot.

Announced in October, the modern-day reboot would return the DC Comics character to live-action TV for the first time since 1979, when she was famously portrayed by Lynda Carter.

Following some unease in December, when Kelley — the award-winning creator of such TV series as Ally McBeal, The Practice and Picket Fences — revealed he hadn’t “necessarily committed” to the superhero project, the pilot script was shopped around early this month. According to Deadline, NBC passed at the time because it was awaiting the arrival of new president of programming Bob Greenblatt, and “couldn’t commit to the type of license fee that the studio was seeking in order to do the show Kelley had envisioned.” With Greenblatt now at the helm, and Kelley’s new comedy-drama Harry’s Law debuting strong, the network snapped up the pilot. (Apparently Kelley knew what he was talking about last week when he said he was “optimistic” the project would make it to TV by next year.)

However, Wonder Woman fans still may have cause for concern. If Deadline’s information is correct, Kelley’s take on the nearly 70-year-old superheroine will differ dramatically from her portrayals in the comic books or the ’70s TV series: Here she’ll be Diana Prince, a vigilante crimefighter and successful corporate executive in Los Angeles who tries to “balance all of the elements of her extraordinary life.”

Thoughts?

I can't think, too busy vomiting.

I hear you Captain. That idea for WW sounds horrible, and I really don't even know much about her at all.

And also, gotta say the whole V gaping gullet still creeps me the hell out. Looking forward to this week's V and no ordinary family, among others.

I would LOVE too see Wonder Woman on television again!! I bought the DVD seasons of the old school with Lynda Carter and it was cute. I think an updated version would be excellent.

I love David E. Kelley’s writing on things like Boston Legal and Pickett Fences - but not sure about Wonder Woman if it is played as the article has it.

If that is the case it is not Wonder Woman it is just a known name with a whole new story line. Actually sounds a bit like the "All New - All Different" Wonder Woman they did in the 1970's.

Thoughts?

on the one hand i'm happy she's coming back to tv but on the other...

the treatment they've written sounds terrible.

i don't understand why it is so difficult for people outside of comics to get who and what she is.

maybe they should have had someone who knows this character, as only a comic book fan could, write this series?

This early in the game though, are there not usually a few 'fake drafts' that float around to stop us from ruining it for ourselves? Let's not fear the worst.

I'm not sure what to think yet. People want to see the classic Wonder Woman. Remember the first Wonder Woman movie with Cathy Lee Crosby? That almost destroyed the Lynda Carter series from happening.

Can anyone tell me about the Young Avengers with Wicca and Hulkling. DONT RUIN IT lol. just tell me your thoughts. I was gonna buy the original run. I like that they're gay so...i should read it.

I'll do my best to give you a brief description of first story arc of the original series (so as not to ruin anything).

After the Avengers were "Decimated" by the Scarlet Witch going bananas, the main team disbanded. A group of teens was assembled by a newly rebooted teenage Vision and a mysterious hero from the future - Iron Lad. Together with a green skinned blond named Hulkling and a young sorcerer who started out named Asgardian but changed his name to Wiccan - as for why - read the books.

The first trade paperback is...

the 2nd trade paperback is...

also good are the trade paperbacks collecting event specials that popped up after those and a miniseries...

other geeky thoughts - X-Men First Class - not happy with the blender approach they've taken. They screwed up the possibility of doing this right when they made Angel a late addition to the team and screwed with Cyclops and Marvel Girl's ages. First Class should be the original 5 - PERIOD. That said - I will still see it.

Wonder Woman - I do NOT approve of Batmanifying the Amazing Amazon. Move her to LA, fine. Call her Diana Prince fine... but she damn well better be an amazon princess with ties to an ancient female culture from Greek Mythology or she's just Buffy fighting thugs.

Also watched The Cape - better than i thought it would be. Circus of Crime was a smart touch. Loved the SNL parody with The Scarf, The Smock and The Neckerchief.

Achilles elephant is simultaneously scary looking and awesome. Achilles is also hot in the picture you have with the announcement. And thanks for the list of all the GLBT comic charaters.

You are welcome... For anyone wondering - the list he mentions is A-Z LGBT Superlist of Heroes, Villains and Supporting Characters - I believe it is the largest list of its kind... includes images (click on their name) , a brief history, references to the title they appeared in and links to any prominent articles available elsewhere online.

The list is also color coded by LGBT status.

well there is a valid rumor that charlie's angels's director, mcg is being courted to direct the ww pilot:

personally i'm not impressed.

Also while i didn't particularly enjoy Gail Simone's Wonder Woman run... I DID like that she basically introduced an officially gay male counterpart to Diana with Achilles.
I agree with you on that one. But I was hoping another writer would pick him up and continue the series with him in it.

yeah - i was bummed that she left the title so quickly because I KNEW that the next writers would not do much with him. But we may not be out of luck... Achilles recently showed up in The Outsiders.

Did he? I am behind on books since I only buy trades. Is he a main character?

The character of Achilles was easily the best thing that came out of the Simone run on Wonder Woman. I also hope he is utilized by the powers that be at DC in other titles. At the very least with Simone writing Birds of Prey and Secret Six, we may see him show up in either or both titles down the road. Very happy to hear from HnH that he showed up in "Outsiders", will have to check that out this Wednesday in my comic shop.

His flying Elephant Mysia alone ups his cool factor by about 1000%:

Beautifully designed by Ariel Lopresti. She could have a mini-series of her own LOL. Maybe a tad reminiscent of Apa the flying oxen from "Avatar: The last Airbender", but still way cool.

The last thing time we saw Achilles in Wonder Woman he was buying a home in America and this happened:

achilles03.jpg

Awww, aren't they cute together? Achilles looks like model Travis Fimmel.

Incredibly clever. For those not steeped in Greek Mythology Patroclus was Achilles young lover. Most definitely not his cousin as it was portrayed in the film "Troy" where Brad Pitt played Achilles and Garret Hedlund played Patroclus.
