Gay Men, Comic Books, and Geeking Out

Livid actually.

I'm pretty much dropping the DC line once the reboot/relaunch/retcon/complete utter bullshit happens.

That is one thing the comic companies never think about - that older readers will use this as an "end point".

I had been a collector for years but when they first began to restart titles with issue number 1 and all the history and time and money I had invested no longer mattered - I stopped buying new comics. I am sure I have missed out on some great stories but there are always graphic novels, Archives and Master Works when I am in the mood.

I saw Green Lantern this weekend. It was ok, but I do agree Ryan is more of a Flash guy than a GL.

i didn't particularly care for gl.

i could launch a diatribe as to why i didn't like it but i'd rather not.

suffice it to say the story/script was weak, the characters weren't all that strong and the cgi had a been-there-seen-that-i-got-the-tshirt look to it.

the only cool thing was seeing oa and all of the corps.

and for the record i'm excited for the DCnU reboot.

i have a lot of faith in geoff johns and jim lee.

i think its going to be fun.

From what I've read the JSA is being retconned out of existence...again. But like jjonn said, these are Legacy characters in their own right that never seem to stay gone for very long.

By removing the JSA, you get rid of attached characters like Stargirl, Atom Smasher, Obisidian and Jade by association. I mean the idea that Alan Scott never existed is a bit much for me to swallow right now...

It's strange that Mr. Terrific is getting a series, but the JSA is nowhere to be found. I'm also worried about the fact that Power Girl hasn't been mentioned AT ALL. Is she being retconned to avoid confusion with Supergirl?

Turning Barbara from Oracle back to Batgirl is total bullshit. She's a WOMAN, not a girl- and there's already a redhead Batwoman out there. Babs was an OK Batgirl, but she really shined as a character and hero under the Oracle mantle.

Ryoko was a badass and a hottie. who wouldnt prefer her. Space-pirate/Demon? Awesome.

I preferred Ryoko over the whiny bitch princess (Ayeka, IIRC). Ryoko had some really awesome outfits and kicked major ass.

I loved the Green Lantern movie... I get what you're saying with the weak storyline. I think it was a good starting point for a better sequel. I think a sequel to that film will be really good. Sinestro as the villain? I hope so. I think Sinestro looked fabulous on screen. And I really liked the girl who played Carol Ferris. I enjoyed the whole cast actually. I really couldn't complain about that.

Altering key elements is one thing. Making a movie without much sense of a plot is quite another.

My guy and I watched an old episode of the X-men cartoon the other day. It was about Alpha Flight. I really enjoyed it and now want to read some Alpha Flight story arcs. Any recommendations guys? I don't know Marvel that well, so help me out? Graphic Novels you could suggest? Thanks!

I don't know if Marvel has released any graphic novels revolving around AF. I love AF and have the entire run of each volume/series of the title. I'd definitely suggest Volume 1 (original run) of the series...

I agree about Mr. Terrific honestly. I like the character for some reason I can't quite explain (bad costume aside) and hope his book does well. I have a sneaking suspicion however that it will either be really good or really bad with no mid-ground.

As for Power Girl, there is no way in hell that she is being retconned into dust. I don't think her relationship to Supergirl is that convoluted compared to say what they've done with Donna Troy over the years (the epitome of the confusing, unnecessarily complex background). Power Girl, and her colossal boobs, aren't going anywhere for long. It may take awhile for her to resurface, but we all know that she has too many fans by virtue of her anatomy alone to allow her to vanish. I haven't read/heard anything concrete though. I hope to hear more at the Baltimore Comic Con about this.

Barbara Gordon as Batgirl is arguably the biggest tragedy I've seen in comics since X3 and that's saying something. I LOVE Oracle/Birds of Prey. This just might be the straw that breaks the camel's back for many readers. Luckily, I'm not that big of a Batman Family fan, so I'm not as insensed as some of my friends who are huge fans of Bats and kin.

Alpha Flight is/was a really cool squad back in the 80s/90s. I kinda lost track of them right around the time I graduated high school (92). They weren't overtly powerful but their crossovers with the X-Men were usually good, as were the Great Beasts storylines. A quick scan of Wikipedia indicates that Alpha Flight has resurfaced recently as part of the Chaos War storyline. I haven't read it, but the synopsis looks interesting and my be worth checking out. In any event, Shaman and Snowbird were my favorite original AF members and I'm glad that they're around in this recent incarnation.

There is a geeking-out thread?!

Though I'm not into comic books. Seems to be the major discussion right now?

I know that I'm pretty much using it as a jumping off point. I'm dropping everything when the reboot starts. That's about 20 bucks a month off my comics money expenditure.

I don't know if they have released trades or not, but the first 12 issues of the original Alpha Flight series are a must. Although I enjoyed most of the first 30 issues or so a lot.

Also, they have a brand new 8 issue series running right now under the Fear Itself tie-in. But you'd want to get a grasp on the history of the team before reading it.

Alpha Flight actually has some decent characters. It's too bad that they can't absorb more of them into the X-books if they can't make a regular AF book work.

If you want a crash course in Alpha Flight, go to uncannyxmen.net

They just had an AF Month, so there are tons of info on the team, its members, locations, villians, and so on. The "Spotlight On..." area of the Cerebro Files has extensive character bios. They contain a full history with full color comic scans, a gallery of every costume the character wore, and a list of issues from important points in the character's history (first appearance, new costume, quit team, etc).
