Has there ever been an Oscar winner (acting categories) who was officially out of the closet?

Since his daughter is Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing), I highly doubt it.

Joel Grey has a daughter, Jennifer Grey, who played 'Baby' opposite Patrick Swayze in 'Dirty Dancing". Of course that doesn't mean he isn't gay, but he has never been out to my knowledge.

Ian McKellen has been nominated twice but I don't think he won.

Here's a few:

John Gielgud
Jodie Foster
Kevin Spacey (?)
George Cukor

I think John Gielgud was open about being gay, but to my knowledge Jodie Foster and Kevin Spacey have never acknowledged it. Spacey, in fact, has adamantly denied it.

If you just mean acting Oscars, then I think most of the major suspects have been named. Melissa Etheridge won an Oscar for her song in the Al Gore documentary An Inconvenient Truth, and Dustin Lance Black recently for Milk. Marlon Brando was certainly bi-sexual, and was once caught supposedly making out with Laurence Olivier, who also won an Oscar for Hamlet. Of course, there are only a very few prominent actors who are openly gay; McKellan is one of them, and so is Derek Jacobi, if I recall.

Here are some guesses on my part. Don't get to angry if I'm wrong on some of these.

Charles Laughton (Bi), Alec Guinness (?), F. Murray Abraham, Burl Ives, Peter Ustinov, George Chakiris, John Houseman, Mercedes McCambridge, Dorothy Malone. Sandy Dennis, Linda Hunt, Dianne Wiest,

Sir Nigel Hawthorne was the first openly-gay man to be nominated for Best Actor, although he lost the award. Sir Ian's nominations came later.

Rock Hudson was nominated for Giant, though at the time of his nomination, he was not yet out.

You could tell because --- HE WAS ALIVE!

Rock never came out. His homosexuality was big news - the day AFTER he died.

Rock was an interesting man, but hardly a profile in courage, and about as deeply closeted as any movie star has ever been.

So no, at the time of his GIANT nomination he was "not yet out." As far as he was concerned, he was never out.

Oops, I forgot Helen Hunt.

Is Helen Hunt gay? Maybe you mean Linda Hunt (Year of Living Dangerously). Interestingly, she is the only performer to win an oscar for portraying someone of the opposite sex. Cate Blanchett was nominated but lost to Tilda Swindon who also played a man in Orlando.
