I think this is because we want to show the world we are caplable of doing anything and do it better.

As you can say, many gay people are best in fashion, arts, polititics, performance, jobs in general.

Is that really true?

Gay people do seem to succeed in fashion, music, art, and theater. I don't know if that success is due to a need to achieve or it's just a unique personality trait.

You could say that any minority has that ambition by virtue of being in the very same position.

This is very true.....especially in college. I've been to two Universities and every gay man I've met in both strive for perfection.....AND are cocky about thier achievements. It's actually really sad. If you compliment them on their talents, they give you this look like, "Did you expect otherwise?"....and then you just feel like taking the compliment back.

its not neccessarily that we are the best at them its just we do get a lot of publicity because unfortunatly the media is still like "omg he's gay" and yes there is an effort to be good in those fields because of the negative stereotypes that many are trying to over take

ive heard its because we have more expendable time and money due to our inherent childless state.

maybe we are just overacheivers to prove that we are not so bad for being gay after all

who knows, but I do think the observation is kind of true

interesting

Not all the gay dudes are overachievers by any stretch of imagination. Many are, and many are not.

Yup.

I'd gladly agree with this one. Nothing draws societal attentions and increases our general acceptability than the purchasing power of the gay dollar.

Some people just have it and the others don't. I felt, I needed some extra layers of protection against a possibly hostile environment out there. I'd say, this played some secondary role in keeping me going. But it never took over. I always felt, there was always going to be a dude with most aces in his sleeve round here. So, I did everything to make sure, I do not get outplayed easily.

I kind of agree with you to some degree on the "over-achiever" thingy; but I do know a lot of people too that this does NOT apply to as well! Go figure!! lol

I know, I guess I fit that over-achiever role; but I'm NOT certain why I fit that role; except like I have told you old-timers, I became a "nerd-type" to show the bullies that I could do something they could NOT, excel in ALL types of studies in school! I also guess that this type of behavior has also led to do the same with ALL other things I touch as well!!

Oh well, another nerdy Gay guy who thinks he knows it all!

Sorry folks!! Forgive me for I have sinned!(*8*) (*8*)

I liken my bouts of over achievement more to my first-generation American Chinese upbringing moreso than my gay identity. I attribute my political and social activisim more to my gay identity than my racial identity.

That being said, I attribute my bouts of complete lethargy to my unique genetic code.

In my highschool that seemed to be true...a disproportionate number of gay people (guys and girls) were top students. It WAS also an arts school...but even in my math classes, the top two students were gay (the only 2 that were gay in a class of 15 from what I know...but none of us were out to many).

It does seem to be somewhat true in general...whether we have "representatives" that are the best or just try harder than most straight people. I don't know why though...whenever I've had my over-achiever moments I don't know if I've ever thought "yay, I'm gay and I'm showing these straight people how it's done".

But who are we trying to prove it to? Perhaps to ourselves? or is it others?

While I do think that successful gays are obviously more devoted to their craft or professions than many others simply because we know we will have to work that much harder to prove ourselves, I do not believe that we are any more predisposed to be better at anything than our straight brothers and sisters. The gays we see who work hard at being the best are simply the ones who make themselves obvious. There are plenty more who are deadbeats, scallywags, layabouts, crooks and thieves. Those are the ones we don't see because we don't want to pay much attention to people like that.
