gay pride parade attacked in Bulgaria

Re: gay pride parade attacked in Europe

Xenophobia?

I think it's worse than homophobia.

Thankfully, no one was harmed, the police actually outnumbered the participants in the parade.

And btw, those "skinheads", they'd go out and throw stones at anyone they don't like: supporters of another football club, gypsies, liberal party meetings...

Same thing happened in Brno in the Czech Republic... unfortunately, the societies in Eastern Europe are still a bit more conservative... last year this happened in Belgrade and Moscow.
That AP article is fairly incorrect... "Gays face widespread hostility in Bulgaria" - untrue, yes, there are right-wing extremists who'd do stuff like that but on the daily round, homophobia is not widely spread.

Bulgaria's biggest star in entertainment, Azis, is gay and married to a guy. He has a very popular TV show (with the highest ratings) and he hosts his show in drag. I guess some of you have heard about him.
Thanks for that information!

Maybe it will help people make more informed, educated and enlightened comments, instead of spewing their judgmental, arrogant, superior and condescending diarrhea of the mouth.

But then again, it probably won't. #-o

Re: gay pride parade attacked in Europe

"I did it because the church doesn't approve of homosexuality officer".

From that small article it does seem like the church were in full support of the attack. I don't mean to be extreme but why don't us sane, normal people start bombing those fucking buildings down?

No sane normal person would bomb a building. You would be committing a hate crime just like any bigot.

Here are the news flashes from the 3 most popular TV channels, the media actively supported the Pride and condemned the skinheads. As I said in a post above, the police did a great job and arrested most of the trouble makers including the leader of that right-wing party that organized the protest against the pride parade.

The language is of course Bulgarian but u can get an idea from the footage about the atmosphere...

I'm glad that little subtly was lost on everyone!

Seems like an odd response to homophobia: Find another group identified by a label and endorse their annihilation.

Just what the world needs, more hate mongers glibly endorsing violence as a measured response.

While we're at it lets bomb bathhouses to slow the spread of STD's and spray napalm at proms to cut down on teen pregnancy.

I'm sorry, but those videos posted 2 post above were scary... to see so many people protesting and hearing like bombs or shots or whatever going off...

Thank goodness I live in Québec, where 75% of the population supports gay marriage :)

Most of that were fireworks but the atmosphere was tense nevertheless...
And once again, that wasn't the response of the general public but a response of a hundred or so right-wing extremists or so called "skinheads", most of the bystanders supported the marching parade...

The police made 88 arrests of skinheads that day, and the number of skinheads on place was around a hundred which tells a lot.

Re: gay pride parade attacked in Europe

Just a heads up, I couldn't care less about it but a lotta people get sensitive about Nazi references because it does sorta (well, really) desensitize the situation. We have our own affliction, the Jews had theirs and as much as it breaks my heart to hear about gay hate crimes, I thank the lucky stars we're not being rounded up and thrown in gas chambers, left in ditches filled with corpses and starved and beated for an extended period of time.

Jews weren't the only victims of the holocaust.

Re: gay pride parade attacked in Europe

I understand, my wording was all mumble jumbled. Victims of the Holocaust, regardless of orientation have express displeasure with the slaughter of their ancestors being used, especially to make a point about someone or something else. I was just sayin,' carry on

Although the numbers were considerably lower, gay people were also victims of the Nazi holocaust, with many thousands being killed in the concentration camps.

That pink triangle logo was the Nazi german gay equivalent of the yellow Star of David and was stitched to the clothes of gay people (by law)

So, I think Jasun's reference to Nazis is perfectly reasonable.

Actually, in some parts of the world "we" are. Mind you, we generally reserve that brand of treatment for Muslims, Tutsis and "enemy combatants" now.

Ever heard of Darfur? They'd have gas chambers if they could get their hands on some gas and an air-tight hut.

BTW, many skinheads self-identify as Nazis so it's not a glib refernce.

I want to thank D-Base for the "on-the-spot" information. (*8*)

Some of the comments in this thread are so lame.

Some of them just baffle me. They have absolutely no connection to reason, logic or reality.

Some of the comments are just plain scary.

«A skinhead called me a bad name, so I'm going to bomb a church.»

Oh yeah, that's not extreme at all. Seems perfectly sane and normal to me. ...NOT!!!

So much big talk here from people hiding anonymously behind a screen name and an avatar.

I'd bet that 90% of you big talkers wouldn't have the balls to march in Bulgaria's first Gay Pride Parade. If you're afraid of a few people quietly handing out flyers, I would just love to see how you would react to a skinhead in your face.

Instead of trying so damned hard to be some kind of a poor pitiful victim, I'd like to see your sorry asses out there marching.

I'm proud of my gay Bulgarian brothers and sisters. They had the guts to get out there and march in their country's first Gay Pride Parade, while being harassed by skinheads. I admire and respect them.

They have earned their pride. :=D:

[Edit] Btw, you noticed that the police were protecting the marchers. It wasn't that long ago that it would have been the marchers being rounded up and arrested.

That's a great post Jakey (*8*)

And yes, hats down to those who weren't afraid to go out there and spread the word! It quickly became apparent who is "normal" and who isn't, glad everyone saw that...

As the leader of the Bulgarian Gay organization "Gemini" said, "Those who said we are not normal threw stones and bombs today, I wonder how one day they will explain to their children how what they did today is "normal"...

Re: gay pride parade attacked in Europe

Saying Bulgaria is Europe, is like saying Mexico is America. It's stricly true, but....

I see what you are saying but something like this would never happen in Mexico. [-X

Half of the 31 states/districts have a gay parade. Still a long way to go, but very far from gay parades attacked by right wing extremists.

MXC's 30th gay parade 06/28/08:

Yeah, true! It is probably like Israel.... though there are certainly a lot of homophobes(more then the zionist media shows), it is still nevertheless a pretty gay friendly place.. Yet, in Jerusalem at the parade there are always groups of people who like try to burn tires and throw them at people, and who are really violent.
