Gay storylines end with tragedy...what say you?

Re: Gay storylines end with tragedy...what say you

Brokeback was a short story set in the 1950's, in a time and place where both men would be risking everything, maybe even their lives, to engage in a gay relationship. The ending to me was tragic but also logical.

The TV show "Brothers and Sisters' just had a wonderful episode wherein the gay male character stole the whole show and ended up proposing to his boyfriend. It was unbelievably touching. I believe their wedding is on the next episode. (Things move fast for the Walkers.)

In the same episode his uncle, who'd been in the closet all his life, came out to him and they had a great scene together. I don't know where that's going though.

Will and Grace ended with both gay characters being happy in their lives, each in his own way.

Many recent gay-themed films (like Trick) have ended with at least the presumption of happiness for the gay characters.

I think as the years go by, Hollywood will be treating gay people/couples like any other---meaning they wind up happy or sad, good or bad, just like other fictional characters.

if I was looking for realstic or happy portrayals of any life, Hollywood would be the last place I'd go to

^^I read the comments after the Brothers and Sisters recap on Entertainment Weekly's website, and there were 4 pages of comments, mostly from straight people, saying how touched they were by Kevin's proposal and how much they love Kevin and Scottie.

There was a kind of unwritten law in movies where a gay character must end up dead unless he's comic relief. "Mountain" follows this tradition. If you were expecting the mainstream Hollywood film hit that would show gay people in a positive light, "Mountain" was a letdown.

So I understand the criticism, but then again, I judged "Mountain" as a film, and not as a gay worldwide event. I thought was a great love story. It ended tragically? "Romeo and Juliet' kills off both main charaters (should I have posted a spoiler alert for that one?) and no one has accused it of being a play/film that didn't push the envelope for teenage lovers around the world.

Do straight (and gay) people need to see more positive examples or models of gay people? Yes. But you can't force a writer or filmmaker to bend to a political agenda. They should be liberty to produce art or even entertainment (and if you've learned all you know about human relations, discrimination, etc, from watching Hollywood films then blame your education, not films).

I hope they realize that Brokeback Mountain was a book before Hollywood had anything to do with it.

but we all know if it had a happy ending it never would have been made into a movie.

Blah, I don't care.

Homosexuality is a deep issue with a lot of people and if it ends tragically, I don't care. I like tragic endings anyway. :)

Anyone ever seen "The Mudge Boy"? The ending for that movie had me puzzled. I guess you could consider it tragic but I didn't understand it.

First, I think that the portrayal of a minority does reflects the minority place on the society. How many times do kids die in movies? and if they do, how many times is painfull? Almost never, people love kids (But I never was able to eat a whole one).

I remember seeing this, but I don't think I watched the end, how is it???

all one had to do was watch Law and Order last evening when the story revolved around a gay brother whose comotose sister in law was about to have a baby aborted by the husband, because the said fetus had been determined to have a "gay gene marker."

the sister in law was originally injured in a bombing attempt against her dr. (the gay gene theory one) made by her gay brother in law.

the dr. had tested the sister in law for the gay gene marker as part of his research project, without her being aware of that. after the explosion they tried to keep the sister in law alive by allowing the baby to go fool term until it was discovered the fetus carried the gay gene marker. it was then that the father found out the fetus carried the gay gene marker and made arrangements to have the pregancy terminated under the guise of try to save his wife's life. he did not want the fetus/child to be gay as was his brother.
