Well, for an assignment for school, we have to bring in song lyrics that are narrative in some way (tell some kind of story).

I wrote a song that I describe as "a coming of age, coming out story/song" that I think is one of my better songs, and I was going to use that but I found out that we have to bring in stuff that isn't our own.

So, I was wondering if anyone knows of a song that deals with a coming out, or deals with something relating to the gay issues, with good lyrics too.

~~Aaron

This is a real old song from the 60's by the Kinks. I think it falls within what your looking for in my opinion. Maybe, maybe not.

Lola

I met her in a club down in old sohoWhere you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola C-o-l-a colaShe walked up to me and she asked me to danceI asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said lolaL-o-l-a lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola

Well I’m not the world’s most physical guyBut when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spineOh my lola lo-lo-lo-lo lolaWell I’m not dumb but I can’t understandWhy she walked like a woman and talked like a manOh my lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola

Well we drank champagne and danced all nightUnder electric candlelightShe picked me up and sat me on her kneeAnd said dear boy won’t you come home with meWell I’m not the world’s most passionate guyBut when I looked in her eyes well I almost fell for my lolaLo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lolaLola lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola

I pushed her awayI walked to the doorI fell to the floorI got down on my kneesThen I looked at her and she at me

Well that’s the way that I want it to stayAnd I always want it to be that way for my lolaLo-lo-lo-lo lolaGirls will be boys and boys will be girlsIt’s a mixed up muddled up shook up world except for lolaLo-lo-lo-lo lola

Well I left home just a week beforeAnd I’d never ever kissed a woman beforeBut lola smiled and took me by the handAnd said dear boy I’m gonna make you a man

Well I’m not the world’s most masculine manBut I know what I am and I’m glad I’m a manAnd so is lolaLo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lolaLola lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola

I an not sure that this tune will work for you, but in the Broadway musical, "La Cage" by Jerry Hermann, he has a main character sing "I Am What I Am."

The lyrics are as follow:

I am what I am, I am my own special creation
So come take a look, give me the hook or the ovation
It's my world that I want to have a little pride in
My world and it's not a place I have to hide in
Life's not worth a damn 'til you can say, hey world
I am what I am

I am what I am, I don't want praise I don't want pity
I bang my own drum, some think it's noise I think it's pretty
And so what if I love each feather and each spangle
Why not try to see things from a different angle
Your life is a sham 'til you can shout out loud
I am what I am

I am what I am and what I am needs no excuses
I deal my own deck sometimes the ace, sometimes the deuces
There's one life and there's no return and no deposit
One life so it's time to open up your closet
Life's not worth a damn 'til you can say, hey world
I am what I am

Hope this works for your project.

Here's one about the feeling of not being able to come out:

Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy

You leave in the morning
With everything you own
In a little black case
Alone on a platform
The wind and the rain
On a sad and lonely face

Mother will never understand
Why you had to leave
But the answers you seek
Will never be found at home
The love that you need
Will never be found at home

Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away.
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away.

Pushed around and kicked around
Always a lonely boy
You were the one
That theyd talk about around town
As they put you down

And as hard as they would try
Theyd hurt to make you cry
But you never cried to them
Just to your soul
No you never cried to them
Just to your soul

Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away.
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away.

Cry , boy, cry...

You leave in the morning
With everything you own
In a little black case
Alone on a platform
The wind and the rain
On a sad and lonely face

Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away.
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away.

Pretty sad song, but a good one.

Here's a few....

"I Am What I Am"

A lot of people don't think so but I still think that the late, great Liberace singing "I'll Be Seeing You" (Original lyrics by Billie Holiday) is about as GAY as you can get!

I'll be seeing you
In all the old familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces
All day through.

In that small cafe;
The park across the way;
The children's carousel;
The chestnut trees;
The wishin' well.

I'll be seeing you
In every lovely summer's day;
In every thing that's light and gay.
I'll always think of you that way.

I'll find you
In the morning sun
And when the night is new.
I'll be looking at the moon,
But I'll be seeing you.

I'll be seeing you
In every lovely summer's day;
In every thing that's light and gay.
I'll always think of you that way.

I'll find you
In the morning sun
And when the night is new.
I'll be looking at the moon,
But I'll be seeing you.

How about the obvious one: Diana Ross's "I'm Coming Out"

I'm coming out
I'm coming
I'm coming out
I'm coming out
I'm coming out
I'm coming out

I'm coming out
I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm coming out
I want the world to know
I got to let it show

There's a new me coming out
And I just had to live
And I wanna give
I'm completely positive
I think this time around
I am gonna do it
Like you never do it
Like you never knew it
Ooh, I'll make it through

The time has come for me
To break out of the shell
I have to shout
That I'm coming out

I'm coming out
I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm coming out
I want the world to know
I got to let it show

I'm coming out
I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm coming out
I want the world to know
I got to let it show

I've got to show the world
All that I wanna be
And all my billities
Ther's so much more to me
Somehow, I have to make them
Just understand
I got it well in hand
And, oh, how I've planned
I'm spreadin' love
There's no need to fear
And I just feel so glad
Everytime I hear:

I'm coming out
I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm coming out
I want the world to know
I got to let it show

Another one from Bronski Beat

Why

Contempt in your eyes
When I turn to kiss his lips
Broken I lie
All my feelings denied
Blood on your fist

Can you tell me why?

You in your false securities
Tear up my life
Condemning me
Name me an illness
Call me a sin
Never feel guilty
Never give in

Tell me why?

You and me together
Fighting for our love

Can you tell me why?

All the Things She Said is a good one

All the things she said
All the things she said
Running through my head
Running through my head
Running through my head
(Running through my head)

All the things she said
All the things she said
Running through my head
Running through my head
(Running through my head)
This is not enough

I'm in serious shit, I feel totally lost
If I'm asking for help it's only because
Being with you has opened my eyes
Could I ever believe such a perfect surprise?

I keep asking myself, wondering how
I keep closing my eyes but I can't block you out
Wanna fly to a place where it's just you and me
Nobody else so we can be free
Nobody else so we can be free

All the things she said
All the things she said
Running through my head
Running through my head
Running through my head
(Running through my head)
All the things she said
All the things she said
Running through my head
Running through my head
All the things she said
All the things she said
(All the things she said)
This is not enough
Ya Soshla S Uma - Ma!
This is not enough
All the things she said
All the things she said

And I'm all mixed up, feeling cornered and rushed
They say it's my fault but I want her so much
Wanna fly her away where the sun and rain
Come in over my face, wash away all the shame
When they stop and stare - don't worry me
'Cause I'm feeling for her what she's feeling for me
I can try to pretend, I can try to forget
But it's driving me mad, going out of my head

All the things she said
All the things she said
Running through my head
Running through my head
Running through my head
All the things she said
All the things she said
Running through my head
Running through my head
All the things she said
All the things she said
This is not enough
This is not enough
All the things she said
All the things she said
All the things she said
All the things she said
All the things she said
All the things she said
All the things she said
All the things she said, she said
All the things she said
All the things she said

Mother looking at me
Tell me what do you see?
Yes, I've lost my mind

Daddy looking at me
Will I ever be free?
Have I crossed the line?

All the things she said (over and over)

I'm surprised no one listed this one. Is 28 years such a long time?

The British Police are the best in the world
I don't believe one of these stories I've heard
About them raiding our pubs for no reason at all
Lining the customers up by the wall
Picking out people and knocking them down
Resisting arrest as they're kicked on the ground
Searching their houses and calling them queer
I don't believe that sort of thing happens here

Sing if you're glad to be gay
Sing if you're happy that way

Pictures of naked young women are fun
In Titbits and Playboy, page three of The Sun
There's no nudes in Gay News, our one magazine
But they still find excuses to call it obscene
Read how disgusting we are in the press
The News of The World and the Sunday Express
Molesters of children, corruptors of youth
It's there in the paper, it must be the truth

Sing if you're glad to be gay
Sing if you're happy that way

Don't try to kid us, but if you're discreet
You're perfectly safe as you walk down the street
You don't have to mince or make bitchy remarks
To get beaten unconscious and left in the dark
I had a friend who was gentle and short
Got lonely one evening and went for a walk
Queerbashers caught him and kicked in his teeth
He was only hospitalised for a week

Sing if you're glad to be gay
Sing if you're happy that way

So sit back and watch as they close all our clubs
Arrest us for meeting and raid all our pubs
Make sure your boyfriend's at least 21
So only your friends and your brothers get done
Lie to your workmates, lie to your folks
Put down the queens and tell anti-queer jokes
Gay Lib's ridiculous, join their laughter
"The buggers are legal now, what more are they after?"

Sing if you're glad to be gay
Sing if you're happy that way

Rage Hard by Frankie Goes to Hollywood

Laugh like the head of apollo
Young and strong on the wings of tomorrow
Rise up in millions get off your knees
Dispelling the demons
In the valley of danger
We all work together, sculptures in sorrow
With love light to follow, on
Sweet head of apollo

Rage hard, into the light
Rage hard, doing it right, doing it right
Rage hard, against the dark
Rage hard, make your mark
Let the tournament begin
Dont give up and dont give in
Strength to rise up, strength to win
Strength to save the wor(l)d from losing

Rage hard, into the light
Rage hard, doing it right
Rage hard, against the dark
Rage hard

Rage!

Rage hard

Though blue eyes of children
They shine without fear
Hope is the future, with oceans of cheer
Nothing to fear
Theres nothing to fear
Though laughter of angels resounding
From heaven keep fighting the favours
Of charlatan saviours, charlatan saviours

Rage hard, into the light
Rage hard, doing it right, doing it right
Rage hard, against the dark
Rage hard, make your mark
Let the tournament begin
Dont give up and dont give in
Rage hard, into the light
Rage hard, doing it right
Rage hard, against the dark
Rage hard, make your mark

I dont know which way to go
My loves like driven snow
When we past the test of time
My love you shall be mine
And if only, lost and lonely
Is all thats wrong with me, we ll be free
Be free, be free

Laugh like the head of apollo
Young and strong on the wings of tomorrow
Rage hard
Rage hard
Let the tournament begin
Dont give up and dont give in

Rage hard, into the light
Rage hard, doing it right
Let the tournament begin
Dont give up and dont give in
Strength to rise up, strength to win
Strength to save the wor(l)d from losing

Maybe it's me, but... a "very strange enchanted boy" who speaks about love to another boy?

I could be wrong, you know.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nature boy - Nat King Cole

There was a boy
A very strange enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far, very far
Over land and sea
A little shy and sad of eye
But very wise was he

And then one day
A magic day he passed my way
And while we spoke of many things
Fools and kings
This he said to me
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return"

"The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return"

I don't think the song was written specifically for a man t osing. I have it sung by Sarah Vaughan from roughly the same time period. Maybe it can be interpreted as such, but I do think you have to do some wiggling to make it work.

I always thought the song "Lonely Soldier Boy" from the cartoon Robotech was a gay come-on.

After all of the battles are over,
After all of the fighting is done,
Will you be the one
To find yourself alone with your heart?
Looking for the answer.

When it feels like tomorrow will never come,
When it seems like the night would not end,
Can you pretend
That you're really not alone?

You're out here on your own.
Lonely soldier boy.
You're out here on your own.
Lonely soldier boy.
Yes I'm lonely,
But are you alone?
Lonely soldier boy.
With all the glory,
Without the joy -
A lonely soldier boy.

Do you believe in the causes you're fighting for?
You used to believe yesterday.
Now what can you say,
Now that you're so far from home

You're out here on your own.
Lonely soldier boy.
You're all alone.
Lonely soldier boy.
But are you really alone?
Lonely soldier boy.

I should be so Lucky (it's about a one sided love)

In my imagination
There is no complication
I dream about you all the time
In my mind, a celebration
The sweetest of sensation
Thinking you could be mine
In my imagination
There is no hesitation
We walk together hand in hand
I`m dreaming
U fell in love with me
Like I`m in love with you
But dreaming`s all I do
If only they`d come true

CHORUS
I should Be so lucky
Lucky, lucky, lucky
I should Be so lucky in love
I should Be so lucky
Lucky, lucky, lucky
I should Be so lucky in love

It`s a crazy situation
You always keep me waiting
Because it`s only make believe
And I would come a-running
To give you all my loving
If one day you would notice me
My heart is close to breaking
And I can`t go on faking
The fantasy that you`ll be mine
I`m dreaming
That you`re in love with me
Like I`m in love with you
But dreaming`s all I do
If only they`d come true

I should Be so lucky
I should Be so lucky
I,I I should Be so lucky
I should Be so lucky
I,I,I,I,I,I,I,I,I,I

In my imagination
There is no hesitation
We walk together hand in hand
I`m dreaming
That you`re in love with me
Like I`m in love with you
But dreaming`s all I do
If only they`d come true

(Slower version)

Lex

As I said before, my lovely green gargoyle: I could be wrong.

PAX
Your enchanted boy from far away.

I love this song! Divinyls - I Touch Myself

I love myself
I want you to love me
When I'm feelin' down
I want you above me
I search myself
I want you to find me
I forget myself
I want you to remind me

Chorus:
I don't want anybody else
When I think about you
I touch myself
I don't want anybody else
Oh no, oh no, oh no

More of a drag queen song but I hear this ALL the time in my local gay pub.

Alot of people don't realize it but yeah...

Coming Clean by Green Day

Seventeen and stung out on confusion
Trapped inside a roll of dissillusion
I found out what it takes to be a man
No, Mom and Dad will never understand

Secrets collecting dust but never forget
Skeletons come to life in my closet

I found out what it takes to be a man
Mom and Dad will never understand
What's happening to me

Seventeen and COMING CLEAN for the first time
I finally figured out myself for the first time
I found out what it takes to be a man
Mom and dad will never understand
WHAT HAPPENED TO ME

OK, you seem to have missed the point. How is this a "coming out" song? It's just really gay.

It's GAY THEMED/coming out also the assignment is a narrative song.

apparently you missed the entire point of the original post.

ISBSL is a song about having a crush/loving someone that doesn't know you have those feelings. It's unrequited love regardless if the one you love is straight or someone else who's gay and you just can't express those feelings b/c society doesn't accept homosexuality.

In my imagination there's no hesitation
We walk together hand in hand

I'm dreaming
That you're in love with me, like I'm in love with you
but dreaming's all I do, if only they'd come true

How is that NOT gay themed exactly?

I always kind of felt that Tommy James and the Shondells' "I think We're Alone Now" could be interpreted as a gay-themed song:

Children behave,
That's what they say when we're together,
And watch how you play,
They don't understand,
And so we're,

Running just as fast as we can,
Holdin' onto one another's hand,
Tryin' to get away into the night,
And then you put your arms around me,
And we tumble to the ground,
And then you say,

I think we're alone now,
There does't seem to be anyone around.
I think we're alone now,
The beating of our hearts is the only sound.

Look at the way,
We gotta hide what we're doin'.
'Cause what would they say,
If they ever knew and so we're,

Running just as fast as we can,
Holdin' onto one another's hand,
Tryin' to get away into the night,
And then you put your arms around me,
And we tumble to the ground,
And then you say,

I think we're alone now,
There does't seem to be anyone around.
I think we're alone now,
The beating of our hearts is the only sound.

I think we're alone now,
There does't seem to be anyone around.
I think we're alone now,
The beating of our hearts is the only sound.

[Instrumental break]

Running just as fast as we can,
Holdin' onto one another's hand,
Tryin' to get away into the night,
And then you put your arms around me,
And we tumble to the ground,
And then you say,

I think we're alone now,
There does't seem to be anyone around.
I think we're alone now,
The beating of our hearts is the only sound.

I think we're alone now,
There does't seem to be anyone around.
I think we're alone now,
The beating of our hearts is the only sound.

I think we're alone now,(alone now)
There does't seem to be anyone around.
I think we're alone now,(alone now)
The beating of our hearts is the only sound.

I think we're alone now,(alone now)
There does't seem to be anyone around.
I think we're alone now,(alone now)
The beating of our hearts is the only sound.

I think we're alone now,(alone now)...

Man, I love that song, though.
