Gay-themed/coming out songs?

ISBSL is a song about having a crush/loving someone that doesn't know you have those feelings. It's unrequited love regardless if the one you love is straight or someone else who's gay and you just can't express those feelings b/c society doesn't accept homosexuality.

In my imagination there's no hesitation
We walk together hand in hand

I'm dreaming
That you're in love with me, like I'm in love with you
but dreaming's all I do, if only they'd come true

How is that NOT gay themed exactly?

Um.. how IS it "gay themed?" It's a song sung by a girl about unrequented love. There's not much indication as to WHY the love is unrequented.. only that he doesn't notice her. maybe she's ugly and he's only likes tall girls.

It's REALLY a stretch to say it's a gay-themed song. I don't think that gay people have a monopoly on one-sided crushes.

It's like saying "Do the Locomotion" is a gay-themed song because so many gay guys get blown in the bathrooms at train stations.

Actually.. this one took me a while to get..

but if you really pay attention to the lyrics, it's not the girl who's letting him go.. it's the guy. The song is about falling in love with a straight guy who got drunk and kissed you once. then he goes back to the girl.. (there's a LOT of gay-themed songs by The Killers although Brandon Flowers insists he's not gay.)

KILLERS

Mr Brightside

I'm coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his-chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, letting me go

And I just can't look its killing me
And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'Cause I'm Mr Brightside

I'm coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his-chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, letting me go

Cause I just can't look its killing me
And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'Cause I'm Mr Brightside

I never...
I never...
I never...
I never...

I'd say 'Secret Love' and 'Love Power/Power of Love' by Luther Vandross are two very gay themed songs. He was a closeted gay man.

First of all, thanks to everyone for helping out. I knew there had to some gay-themed songs around, but I didn't know there were so many. And to pick one out of so many good songs you guys have listed isn't going to be easy.

I'd say 'Secret Love' and 'Love Power/Power of Love' by Luther Vandross are two very gay themed songs. He was a closeted gay man.

If he was closeted, how do you know he's gay?

Anyway, here are the lyrics to the song that I wrote about coming out.

Secret Life

What do all these feelings mean?
Is it a phase, or simply just me?
And I wonder if there's a word to describe
Who I am, or what's inside.

Is there any way to explain
Why I'm the only one on this island?
Don't know who to trust, to confide in
How long will I be hiding?

Chorus:

Will you tell me to change?
Will we become estranged?
Are you ashamed of who I am?
Will you love me less?
It's the ultimate test
To confess my secret life.

So I finally admit
That I might be just a little different
It's so heavy carrying this burden
A facade I must perpetuate

Repeat Chorus

I believe in my heart and my soul this is how God created me
I believe if I don't breathe a word that no fist or slur will ever make me bleed
And I believe with no doubt that there isn't anyone I would rather be.

So now we're sitting face to face
The words I say, I say with pride and strength
Tears sliding down our cheeks
And through it all, I'm surprised to find relief

Repeat Chorus

Please don't tell me to change
I hope we don't become estranged
Don't disown me for who I am
Please don't love me less
It's the ultimate test
To confess.... my life.

When I first premiered this song, I wasn't sure how people would react to it. And when I talked a little about it before performing it, I basically came out to the everyone there (even though I'm already out) and they really listened. After the song, I got two rounds of applause and I was just so happy that people liked it.

There was one guy that came up to me and told me he was really proud of me, of what I had just done, and thanked me so much for it. I was floored, to say the least, and I feel so great that my music is touching people. It's a great feeling.

Well, for an assignment for school, we have to bring in song lyrics that are narrative in some way (tell some kind of story)
~~Aaron

how about "the killing of georgie"

In these days of changing ways
so called liberated days
a story comes to mind of a friend of mine

Georgie boy was gay I guess
nothin' more or nothin' less
the kindest guy I ever knew

His mother's tears fell in vain
the afternoon George tried to explain
that he needed love like all the rest

Pa said there must be a mistake
how can my son not be straight
after all I've said and done for him

Leavin' home on a Greyhound bus
cast out by the ones he loves
A victim of these gay days it seems

Georgie went to New York town
where he quickly settled down
and soon became the toast of the great white way

Accepted by Manhattan's elite
in all the places that were chic
No party was complete without George

Along the boulevards he'd cruise
and all the old queens blew a fuse
Everybody loved Georgie boy

The last time I saw George alive
was in the summer of seventy-five
he said he was in love I said I'm pleased

George attended the opening night
of another Broadway hype
but split before the final curtain fell

Deciding to take a short cut home
arm in arm they meant no wrong
A gentle breeze blew down Fifth Avenue

Out of a darkened side street came
a New Jersey gang with just one aim
to roll some innocent passer-by
There ensued a fearful fight
screams rang out in the night
Georgie's head hit a sidewalk cornerstone

A leather kid, a switchblade knife
He did not intend to take his life
He just pushed his luck a little too far that night

The sight of blood dispersed the gang
A crowd gathered, the police came
An ambulance screamed to a halt on Fifty-third and Third

Georgie's life ended there
but I ask who really cares
George once said to me and I quote

He said "Never wait or hesitate
Get in kid, before it's too late
You may never get another chance
'Cos youth a mask but it don't last
live it long and live it fast"
Georgie was a friend of mine

Oh Georgie stay, don't go away
Georgie please stay you take our breath away
Oh Georgie stay, don't go away
Georgie please stay you take our breath away
Oh Georgie stay, don't go away
Georgie, Georgie please stay you take our breath away
Oh Georgie stay

what a fucking asshole!

just because YOU don't think it is then it's wrong. Yea that's a great arguement:confused:

So if a song is sung by a girl then guys can't relate? And vice versa? what a load of bullshit.

Not many songs have a clear his/her distinction and ISBSL is one of them.

Lyrics are about interpretation not always about literal meanings.

Maybe if you thought about something besides being able to swallow an entire hotdog you'd understand that...

>>>just because YOU don't think it is then it's wrong.

So, just because YOU think it is makes it right?

Yes, lyrics are open to interpretation. But the OP was looking for songs that deal with gay issues and/or coming out. To me, that means specifically literal meanings. Not songs that a few gay people feel a kinship towards, or ones that maybe kinda sorta can be somewhat applicable to homosexuals in some situations. Hell, we homos are human, too, and therefore any songs that taps into a human emotion could be considered to be "gay-themed" under that definition.

I always thought the Cure's "Mint Car" was about a guy who had just bottomed for the first time. Is it? I don't know. I think it is. But I wouldn't call it "gay-themed" just 'cause I think so.

The sun is up, I'm so happy I could scream
And there's nowhere else in the world I'd rather be
Than here with you, It's perfect
It's all I ever wanted
I almost can't believe that it's for real

I really don't think it gets any better than this
Vanilla smile and a gorgeous strawberry kiss!
Birds sing we swing
Clouds drift by and everything is like a dream
It's everything I wished

Never guessed it got this good
Wondered if it ever would
Really didn't think it could
Do it again? I know we should!!!

The sun is up, I'm so fizzy I could burst!
You wet through and me headfirst
Into this is perfect
It's all I ever wanted
Ow! It feels so big it almost hurts!

Never guessed it got this good
Wondered if it ever would
Really didn't think it could
Do it some more? I know we should!!!

Say it will always be like this
The two of us together
It will always be like this
Forever and ever and ever...

Never guessed it got this good
Wondered if it ever would
Really didn't think it could
Do it all the time? I know that we should!!!

can never forget my girl

Everyone Knows

(Joan Jett/Jim Vallance/Kenny Laguna)

I know that people talk
Don't tell me what they say
It used to get to me
But I won't change my ways
As time goes by
I will never learn
And I don't care
If everyone knows

Nobody understands
We don't play by the rules
I can't imagine why
They can't buy what we do
With all that's real
Is the way we feel
And I don't care if everyone knows

Owww

Just when I'm sure no one sees what I see
I realize that there's still you and me
You know I am there for you
I'll always care for you

I see 'em stare at us
Whenever we're together
They haven't got the right
Just cuz we're wearin' leather
If you're all right
If I'm all right
And I don't care if everyone knows
If it feels this strong
It can't be wrong
And I don't care
If everyone knows

People get scared cuz
They think we are freaks
But they will never bring me to my knees
You know I am there for you
I'll always care for you
If you're all right
And I'm all right
Everyone knows
If you're all right
And I'm all right
Everyone knows
If you're all right
And I'm all right
Everyone knows

and

Androgynous

(Paul Westerberg)

Here comes Dick
He's wearing a skirt
Here comes Jane
You know she's sporting a chain
Same hair revolution
Same build evolution
Tomorrow who's going to fuss

And they love each other so
Androgynous
Closer than you know
Love each other so
Androgynous

Well don't get him wrong
And don't get him mad
He might be a father
But he sure ain't a dad
She don't need
Advice that they send to her
She's happy with the way she looks
She's happy with her gender

And they love each other so
Androgynous
Closer than you know
Love each other so
Androgynous

Mirror image see no damage
See no evil at all
Cupie dolls and urine stalls
Will be laughed at the way
You're laughed at now

Now something meets boy
And something meets girl
They both are the same
They're overjoyed in this world
Same hair revolution, unisex, evolution
Tomorrow who's gonna fuss

And tomorrow Dick is wearing pants
Tomorrow Jane's wearing a dress
Future outcasts and a they don't last
And a today the people dress the way
That they please
The way they tried to do in the last century

And they love each other so
Androgynous
Closer than you know
Love each other so
Androgynous
Androgynous
Androgynous
Don't you get it
Androgynous

>>>just because YOU don't think it is then it's wrong.

So, just because YOU think it is makes it right?

No just because that's what it means to ME and the original poster was asking for suggestions I felt that it was what he was looking for, or at least a simple suggestion. I described why I thought the song fit what he was looking for and some asshole decides out of the 20 some odd songs on here that for some reason he didn't like my choice.

if it had been the original poster, i'd ok cool thats not what you meant...but the guy asked for a narrative(meaning it tells a story)..."im coming out" isnt a narrative

Okay, long post, but I was going through my music so...

On the lesbian side, there's There She Goes covered by Six Pence None-the-Richer and also I Kissed a Girl by Sobule Jill:

There she goes
There she goes again
Racing through my brain
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains

There she goes
There she goes again
Pulsing through my veins
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains

There she goes
There she goes again
Racing through my brain
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains

There she goes
There she goes again
She calls my name,
Pulls my train
No one else could heal my pain
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains

There she goes
There she goes again
Chasing down my lane
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains

There she goes
There she goes
There she goes

Genny came over and told me 'bout Fred
" He's such a hairy behemoth, " she said
" Dumb as a box of hammers
But he's such a handsome guy. "
And I opened up and told her 'bout Larry
And yesterday how he asked me to marry

I'm not giving him an answer yet
I think I can do better

So we laughed
Compared notes
We had a drink, we had a smoke
She took off her over coat
I kissed a girl

So she called home to say she'd be late
He said he'd worried but now he feels safe
" I'm glad you're with your girlfriend, tell her hi for me "
So I looked at you, you had guilt in your eyes
But it only lasted a little while
And then I felt your hand above my knee

And we laughed at the world
They can have their diamonds
And we'll have our pearls
I kissed a girl

I kissed a girl, her lips were sweet
She was just like kissing me
I kissed a girl, won't change the world
But I'm so glad I kissed a girl

And we laughed at the world
They can have their diamonds
And we'll have our pearls
I kissed a girl

For the first time
I kissed a girl
And I may do it again
I kissed a girl
I kissed a girl

I kissed a girl her lips were sweet
She was just like kissing me
But better

I kissed a girl
Won't change the world
But I'm so glad
I kissed a girl
For the first time
I kissed a girl

"Lover I Don't Have to Love" by Bright Eyes mentions both genders as targets of desire, which is more bisexual, but less themed and more matter of fact:

"I want a girl who's too sad to give a fuck" and "I want a guy who's so drunk he doesn't talk".

Broken Social Scene also has the song "I'm Still Your Fag" about a gay man who's having an affair with a married man, most likely one who only uses him for sex:

Heard about your wife and kids where we slept
Felt their mouths with stitches at that were slowly lit
Capture uniform this time because I couldn't quit
Haven't felt the ground so cold without getting sick

And I'm still your fag
I'm still your fag

It's a possibility to live without lips
Kleenex love to fill right up with all the broken kids
I swore I drank your piss that night to see if I could live
But my wrists couldn't stand the light that we missed

And I'm still your fag
I'm still your fag

You're only coming out because you came back in
You're only coming out cause you came back in

I'm still your fag
I'm still your fag

----------------------------

I think I remember watching a program that mentioned that targeting the gay audience was becoming popular for musicians and that Daniel Beddingfield was being marketed this way, too and they interviewed him for a bit. Because of that, I always felt that his single "If You're Not the One" was a subtle gay-themed song, even though it has the line "Then why do I dream of you as my wife?" The rest of the song makes a pretty good case for a same-sex relationship, but that's just my interpretation:

If you're not the one then why does my soul feel glad today?
If you're not the one then why does my hand fit yours this way?
If you are not mine then why does your heart return my call?
If you are not mine would I have the strength to stand at all?

I never know what the future brings
But I know you are here with me now
We'll make it through
And I hope you are the one I share my life with

I don't wanna run away but I can't take it, I don't understand
If I'm not made for you then why does my heart tell me that I am?
Is there any way that I can stay in your arms?

If I don't need you then why am I crying on my bed?
If I don't need you then why does your name resound in my head?
If you're not for me then why does this distance maim my life?
If you're not for me then why do I dream of you as my wife?

I don't know why you're so far away
But I know that this much is true
We'll make it through
And I hope you are the one I share my life with
And I wish that you could be the one I die with
And I'm praying you're the one I build my home with
I hope I love you all my life

I don't wanna run away but I can't take it, I don't understand
If I'm not made for you then why does my heart tell me that I am
Is there any way that I can stay in your arms?

'Cause I miss you, body and soul so strong that it takes my breath away
And I breathe you into my heart and pray for the strength to stand today
'Cause I love you, whether it's wrong or right
And though I can't be with you tonight
You know my heart is by your side

I don’t wanna run away but I can’t take it, I don’t understand
If I’m not made for you then why does my heart tell me that I am
Is there any way that I can stay in your arms?

Let's not forget Electric Six's "Gay Bar" or Franz Ferdinand's "Michael" for some campy gay fun-themed songs.

Almost any song on the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack could be considered gay-themed, even if it's sung by a woman. The two female-sung tracks that stand out are are "No One's Going to Love You Like Me" by Mary McBride and "A Love That Will Never Grow Old" by Emmylou Harris. The male-sung tracks that stand out are "I Will Never Let You Go" by Jackie Green, "I Don't Want to Say Goodbye" by Teddy Thompson and "He Was a Friend of Mine" by Willie Nelson, who also did a version of "Cowboys are Secretly Frequently" independently, which is about gay cowboys.

Garbage has quite a few songs that are gay-themed ("Androgyny", "Cherry Lips (Go, Baby, Go!) but the one that's most obvious is "Queer" and my best friend believes the music video is about a gay guy (belonging to a mob family) whose father pays a hooker to have sex with him and "convert" him against his will.

Queer idie rock groups like Panzy Division and the Magnetic Fields and the Hidden Cameras have a lot of queer themed songs. Almost any Panzy Division song is gay-themed, and I only know of "Ban Marriage" by the Hidden Cameras and "Music is My Boyfriend."

Le Tigre (a dyke band) created an anthem for queer youth called "Keep On Livin'"...

Even though the lyrics mention a boy and a girl, Madonna's "Forbidden Love" is a given, especially considering her gay-icon status.

Scissor Sisters is a glam group, Jake Shears himself claiming to be bi or gay, I can't remember. Of all of their songs, I felt that "Return to Oz" was about the crystal meth problem in a lot of the gay party community. But I mean, I take all of their songs to be gay-themed or gay-viable like "Take Your Mama" and "Better Luck Next Time".

Rikki Don't Lose That Number - Steely Dan

We hear you're leaving, that's OK
I thought our little wild time had just begun
I guess you kind of scared yourself, you turn and run
But if you have a change of heart

CHORUS:
Rikki don't lose that number
You don't wanna call nobody else
Send it off in a letter to yourself
Rikki don't lose that number
It's the only one you own
You might use it if you feel better
When you get home

I have a friend in town, he's heard your name
We can go out driving on Slow Hand Row
We could stay inside and play games, I don't know
And you could have a change of heart

CHORUS

You tell yourself you're not my kind
But you don't even know your mind
And you could have a change of heart

CHORUS

(*8*)

what a fucking asshole!
I've never argued this.
just because YOU don't think it is then it's wrong. Yea that's a great arguement:confused:
I've always thought so.
So if a song is sung by a girl then guys can't relate? And vice versa? what a load of bullshit
of course they can relate. but how does it make it "gay" in any way? I mean honestly... if you're just talking about how gay people can relate to a song.. you may was well say EVERY song is gay-themed since some gay person somewhere could find some meaning in it.

Maybe if you thought about something besides being able to swallow an entire hotdog you'd understand that...

pompus jackass i swear

yes. yes you are.

Garbage's "Sex is Not the Enemy"

It goes broader than just dealing with gay issues, it's more of an anthem to the songwriter's sexual politics, but I think it's worth a mention.

No evolution
Sometimes it depresses me
The same old same
We keep repeating history
The institution curses curiosity
It's our conviction
Sex is not the enemy

A revolution
Is the solution
A revolution
Is the solution

I won't feel guilty
No matter what they're telling me
I won't feel dirty and buy into their misery
I won't be shamed cause I believe that love is free
It fuels the heart and sex is not the enemy

A revolution
Is the solution
A revolution
Is the solution

True love is like gold
There's not enough to go around
But then there's god and doesn't god love everyone?
Give me a choice
Give me a chance to turn the key and find my voice
Sex is not the enemy

A revolution
Is the solution
A revolution
Is the solution
Sex is not the enemy
A revolution

In my opinion, this song should be the gay anthem:gogirl:

Okay, here's my contribution. Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" is definitely gay. I guess there's a little narrative here. It's about a few of the people that wound up associated with Andy Warhol's factory. Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling, Joe D'allesandro, and Jackie Curtis are mentioned by name.

Ivri Lider - Jesse

I love a boy named Jesse
But Jesse doesn't love me back
He says he has a girl in Chelsea he wants so much

I love a boy named Jesse
But Jesse doesn't love me back
He says he's insecure about what he feels and what he wants
What he feels and what he wants

But everytime he smiles at me
I know we are the same
And that he'll change his world for me
If he just knew my name

There's no need for you to say you saw the life they chose for me
For me

I loved a boy named Jesse
But Jesse doesn't love me back
He wants to kiss and go to bed but he doesn't want to talk
I loved a boy named Jesse
But Jesse doesn't love me back

He says his faith and all that stuff is only in my mind
Only in my mind

All i can hide
I'm doing fine

But everytime he smiles at me i know we are the same
And that'll he'll he change his world for me
If he just knew my name

There's no need for you to say you saw the life they chose for me
For me

I love a boy named Danny
But Danny doesn't love me
He says he has a girl in Chelsea he wants so much

I love a boy named Danny
But Danny doesn't love me
He says he's insecure about what he feels and what he wants
He feels and what he wants

"Two Grey Rooms": a gay-themed song by Joni Mitchell. The song is on her "Night Ride Home" CD (1991)

Joni Mitchell: "I had a piano piece that I recorded in 1982. No melody to it at that point and certainly no lyrics - just chord changes. After we tracked it, I was in "heart" mode and I overdubbed a beautiful wordless melody on top of it. I called it "Speechless."

"It took me seven years to find words for it. I kept thinking: This thing wants to be written in French" and I had to find the right story for the mood of it. It's a very dramatic melody, full of longing. So, I finally found a story in some magazine about a German aristocrat, a homosexual and friend of Fassbinder, who had had a lover in his youth that he never got over. He lost track of him for many years. One day, he discovered that his old flame was working on the docks. He moved out of his fancy digs and into a couple of dingy rooms that overlooked the route where, with his hard hat and his lunch pall, his ex lover walked to work. He lived to glimpse him twice a day, coming and going. He never approached him." (JM: The Complete Geffen recordings, liner notes)

TWO GREY ROOMS

Tomorrow is Sunday
Now there's only one day left to go
Till you walk by
Below my window
The weekends drive me mad
Holidays are oh too sad
'Cause you don't go
Below my window

No one knows I'm here
One day I just disappeared
And I took these two grey rooms up here
With a view
When you walk by
Below my window

You look so youthful
Time has been untruthful
Heaven knows I loved you
Hot days your shirt's undone
Rainy days you run
Oh and then you fade so fast
Below my window

No one knows I'm here
One day I just disappeared
And I took these two grey rooms up here
With a view
Only when you walk by
Below my window
When you walk by

Below my window
Below my window
Hey hey
Below my window
Below my window
Below my window

Omigod! ME TOO!

In fact when I heard it, I started commenting on it, and sending it to all my friends.
told just about everyone I knew and then when I first met my boyfriend told him, and was like, "listen to the song, you can't tell me this guy is not talking about loving another man."
especially considering the era and the lyrics. It wouldn't be looked down upon so much if it was a boy and girl. A boy sings this song. forget that tiffany bitch ripoff.

I mean some key phrases
"Chrildren behave, that's what they say we're together"
Obviously being said to by the parents.

"And watch how you play, they don't understand."
I mean, come on, they're telling the boys to be careful and not rough house too much.

"So we're running just as fast as we can"
They're getting away! Run boys run!

"Cause look at the way we got to hide at what we're doing, cause what would they say, if they ever knew"
Why would a boy and girl have to hide holding hands and what they were doign back then?
they wouldn't... the following line after, pretty much says their love is incredibly taboo.

I mean, it's there in subtext it's incredibly likely Tommy James was trying to tell people in the know something.
Not to mention the Shoundells were all male... and what kind of name is the "Shoundells"?

Oh, and since we're thinking the same thing again (weird, eh?)
