First, treasury minister David Laws resigned following the allegation of irregularities in his expense claims. Apparently he was claiming for rent paid to his landlord who was also his boyfriend.

Yesterday, prisons minister Crispin Blunt announced that he's gay too.

And today, the Daily Telegraph is reporting that an as yet unnamed cabinet minister is threatening legal action if gay rumours circulating on the internet (which he denies) are published.

Whatever next?

Canada has had openly gay politicians in office for many years, and it all began with Svend Robinson 22 years ago. And hey, we elect them even if we know they're gay before the election!

Canada seems way ahead of most other countries.
The U.S. has a few gay politicians including lesbians.
I thought Gordon Brown was sexy but he's straight so that negates his sexiness.

It's rather interesting that other countries seem to have politicians resigning because they are gay. Here in Canada, we've had straight politicians resigning (or being forced to resign) because of comments they made about homosexuals.

I'm in two minds on whether this case has any truth in it or not.

On the one hand, it's been known before (especially by the tabloids) for them to completely fabricate sexual gossip and rumours about politicians from the sole source of a dodgy informant - for example, like they did with Neil & Christine Hamilton.

On the other hand, only today, another footballer filed an injunction against reporting of his private life, so maybe it's a high-profile cabinet member who similarly wants to muzzle the press.

Could it be George Osborne? I've always thought he bore a resemblance to Julian Clary. ;)

Who would your guess be, unloadonme? Give us the Daily Mail angle.

P.S. And I'll have you know that amongst the walking group here, at least one of the fine, decent and upstanding Sussex gentlemen is a Guardian reader. [-X

Well, dear boy, I'd have to say that William Hague is a bit of a worry.

The Daily Mail? Who reads that rag? The story was in the Daily Telegraph, so it must be true. And what are you doing mixing with Guardian-reading riff raff?

:D

They are a very eclectic and avuncular group, old chap. ;)

But always frightfully dry, offhand, and distant, in the classic English manner. [-X

We need to get metta onto the case. ..|

I don't know any of the gay ministers but I do know that London had a hot openly gay Mayoral candidate a few years - Brian Paddick.

Google him and see.

Hate to say I told you so ChickenGuy, but it looks like I was right! ;)

Yah, looks like the press has been whispering about Mr. Hague and Mr Myers as if they've had a secret relationship. I'd say I'd find Hague convincing, he's a pretty consistent politician, a rare breed, I can only imagine some people either have loose tongues or actually wanted to see if they could destroy his career.

There were whispers about Hague well before Myers. Nothing in them, I'm sure, but he's up there in public and there's always someone who'll try to pick people like that off. Hague is considered too clever and, dare I say it, too Yorkshire by some and given that he's now Foreign Secretary he's bound to be a target.
