Gay villages

I live in Seattle's traditional gay neighborhood, Capitol Hill. However, the neighborhood has never really been as truly gay as places like San Francisco's Castro. There are a lot of gay men around, but also a lot of hipsters and other youngish people who want to live near the urban core. We have quite a few bars and clubs (see map) and a couple of restaurants. Almost all of the gay bars in town are located along a ~10 block strip between Pike and Pine street in the neighborhood, although there are actually quite a few straight and mixed bars in that area too.

Seattle is interesting in that it generally seems like gay people are scattered throughout the city more than in a lot of other towns. The city on the whole is very liberal and pro-gay with the more conservative elements being more commonly found in the suburbs that are further out.

I agree with my buddy Elwood. Montreal has the best gay scene that I know of... but like him I haven't checked out the gay scene in many places except for Provincetown, Toronto and Ottawa.

P'town is beautiful and can be loads of fun, but those who run the gay bars there need a lesson or two in how to market what they've got. There is something wrong when a so-called major dance club like the Paramount (Crown and Anchor) has about 15 people in it on a Friday night!

Give me Montreal's Sky or Unity anytime! :)

The one at the University of Michigan's little college town of Ann Arbor, liberal bubble of the mitten state, consists of a small plaza. ::shrug::

I've been to New York's at the late night when it was dead, and Toronto's. I like Toronto's. It was seeing all the gay couples with their little babies everywhere that won me over.

Where we live has no gay village, but it seems as though per capita of population, there are more gay people than other cities of a similar size. I can think of at least 4 other gay guys from my class of about 120. It seemed as though every class was the same. Must have been something in the water!!!!

Brisbane is the gay capital of Queensland, and it seems that most gay people centre on the suburbs of Spring Hill, Fortitude Valley, and Newfarm which are the closest to the CBD. Sydney on the other hand is another story. It seems that the whole area on the southern side of the harbour, from the CBD to Bondi Beach is all gay oriented
