"Gay? Whatever, Dude" (NYTimes)

There is no way to know for sure what’s driving such a radical change in men’s views on this issue because Gallup didn’t ask, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t speculate.

The contact hypothesis. As more men openly acknowledge that they are gay, it becomes harder for men who are not gay to discriminate against them. And as that group of openly gay men becomes more varied — including athletes, celebrities and soldiers — many of the old, derisive stereotypes lose their purchase.

yes yes yes. being out is not just a purely personal matter, its also a political matter. especially if you are a public figure.

It is what we've been saying since Stonewall.

This is what I'VE been saying for years also. Men are pack animals. The more men there are like you who have ANNOUNCED their presence in the pack, the more powerful you will be perceived by others who are not like you.

If you are viewed as the only gay man in your town, straight men will treat you like you don't matter. Once they get used to seeing a lot of guys like you, those pussy's will start showing you more respect.

Whenever a gay man comes out, particularly if he has high social status and capital, it empowers the rest of us.

"A rising tide lifts all boats."

If Ricky Martin wouldn't be out I don't know if I would either.

And Elvis Duran is also an inspiration for me I guess :D

I’m a member of another message board about a very macho pastime, with lots of butch male members, many of them in their 40s+ and many more former or active Military.

Someone (not me) started a thread about George Alan Rekers (anti-gay asshat who hired a callboy to “handle his luggage”) and I intentionally avoided it. I didn’t want to read the kinds of comments I assumed it would be filled with. Well, after it has several pages worth of replies curiosity got the better of me and I clicked it. To my bewindlered amazement, the comments in support of LGBT people were overwhelming. Only one idiot started quoting Bible verses, and many others shouted him down. What’s more impressive is the number of butch str8 guys who ‘got it’ about why Rekers was such a twat; how he is a hypocritical dickweed forcing self-loathing on open and honest LGBT people who should be free to live their lives.

I really felt happy.

Yeah, it's surprising but true.

Most homophobia actually comes from straight girls more than any other group of people. The group that you would stereotypically accept to be a gay man's 'best gay pal' is actually his worst enemy. I suppose that's part of why Will & Grace made me feel sort of blegh inside.

This also fits my real life, my mom and sister have had more problems with my homosexuality than my dad and brothers ever did. (although they have improved) They just don't care. But in the media, men get the bad rap of being the 'dumb straight homophobic brute.' Ugh. That's not true at all, it's usually some narcissistic female that says shitty things about gay men.

It's just well, if a man *is* homophobic he has a much higher chance at being violent with it then a woman does. But that's because he's essentially a man, not because he's a homophobic man. Overall, men are still less likely to be homophobic.

The article implores some logical hoop jumping but makes some sense. It ignores alot of psychological research that would connect ideas but when the editor says "write a 1k word piece", you have to cut corners somewhere. Of course I don't expect much from the NYT without squeezing in some political BS into an editorial.

I would say there is more homophobia amongst women than men because of a combination of penis envy and a hegemonic male hierarchy or in layman's terms, jealousy. Lesbianism is a whole other can of worms as the author points out and it is often difficult to lump the two (male and female) sexualities together.

it why word( HOMOPHOBIA) not use so casual whens lot stuff bury in what nothin do HOMO ans HOMO nothin do anything

>>>I’m a member of another message board about a very macho pastime, with lots of butch male members, many of them in their 40s+ and many more former or active Military.

I'm on a couple other messageboards that might be considered "straight-leaning" as well - one is for sports fans, and the other is industry-related. I'm out on both. I've gotten some grief from a couple other members on the industry one, but it's nothing compared to the acceptance and support. And NOBODY has an issue with my sexuality on the sports one.

I don't believe this to be true at all. My recollection of polling is that women are substantially more pro-equality for gays than men. I think you've based the reality of general population on your own atypical experience.

Worth quoting again. :=D:

Why do some think homophobia comes from women?

Anyone can be homophobic but the majority of it I've seen comes from men. I have found women to be extremely accepting of gays. Or maybe single young ladies have a secret vendetta against us. "Darn those gays! They're taking all good guys." Relax single ladies, I'm not going to steal your man if that's the cause of your homophobia.

I have met only a few women in my 60 years who were at all homophobic. Almost to a woman they've accepted me unconditionally.

And truth be told, the overwhelming majority of straight men who've gotten to know me are very cool with it.

It's all about knowing individuals, as the author of the editorial says, as opposed to some abstract cultural stereotype.

Very interesting thread and article. Here's to men and score one for "teh gays". :)

I think when DADT will be reppealed it will help gain more acceptance and it's going to be very interesting.

On February 17th, 1991, all the heterosexual men of the world suddenly realized that: (a) gay men give better blow jobs than women, and (b) that they want nothing in return for it, let alone expensive jewelry.

Ever since then, heterosexual men have been accepting of, in fact even turned on by, the idea of another man giving them a blow job.

The word "gay" is still deadly poison, however, to heterosexual men who are intensely concerned with their image and status among their peers. They want the sex, but they don't want that terrifying label.

LOL you really think that's true?
