That is true. Does anyone knows about St. Martin/St. Marteens? The thing is that most British (or former)West Indies are notoriously Anti-Gay. But the Dutch/French may not be, except they might be too small. But St. Martin/St. Marteens and Martinique are larger.
Ooo, I just went to Anguilla last month. Even if it isn't gay friendly, i.e. gay clubs, other gay couples, etc., I HIGHLY recommend it. Very private, and a gorgeous island in general. Plus, I swam with dolphins!! 
I haven't had the nightlife experience in St. Martin, but I would imagine St. Thomas/St. John's would be more "acceptable."
Screw it, you'll be in the Caribbean. Do what makes you feel good!!

Grand Cayman.
Fantastic, fantastic diving, and you can drive around the whole island in a few hours. I don't know about the gay bit, but it's worth it regardless.
I'm dying to go back and take a hop to the smaller islands (Cayman Brac and Little Cayman).

]Oooo, good call Fallen. I went there for a day, and they canceled the "Swimming with Stingrays" thing cause it was raining at 8 AM.
It wasn't until 12 pm. Not a damn cloud in the sky at that time. Booooo.

I did a quick google search, and St. Maarten (the dutch half of St. Marten) seems to be pretty gay friendly. The Advocate seems to like it.

I have some friends who just came back from the big gay Atlantis cruise (3700 gay men on one boat for a week). The boat stopped in St. Maarten (as well as Labadi, Haiti and San Juan, Puerto Rico) and they had a nice time there. Still, St. Maarten is where that nasty attack against two gay men leaving a club occured, which I've heard has had somewhat of a chilling effect on gay tourism there.
