Gays and Hate Crimes

Just my opinion, but I think there would be fewer hate crimes if everyone knew that gay people took self-defense courses and knew how to defend themselves.

Just a thought.

My left wing liberal NE born and raised boyfriend was fully trained in self defense including a concealed carry permit shortly after I met him.

Gay men need to embrace learning to take care of themselves.

Just a thought.

My sig here has been urging the most effective solution to this most of the time I've been here. It's really a simple premise:

Armed gays don't get bashed.

I would be thrilled some morning to read in the news that in, oh, Lubbock, Texas, eleven skinheads were booked into the morgue after assaulting four gays by a city park. Even the neo-Nazis are bright enough to know that if people are going to effectively defend themselves, they should be left alone.

im a believer that more guns = more gun violence but sometimes when the "man" wont protect you, you gotta have options.

You live in that fantasy land, too?

The number of private firearms in the U.S. keeps climbing by millions per year, and the rate of all violence (except, generally, impulse murder) keeps going down.

but sometimes when the "man" wont protect you, you gotta have options.

That would be "always": if a bad guy is after you with intent and ability to do bodily harm, the only person close enough to eliminate the threat is you.

That fact is why hate crime occurs at all: if the barbarians thought there was the least chance someone might arrive and stop them before they'd finished their animal activities, they wouldn't do it!

I just wish there was some universally-recognized symbol that meant, "Armed minority who will get medieval on your ass" we could all wear and have the primitives among us see it and go away.
Short of that, since they grant awe and honor to violence, we should be ready, and then make our violence effective and permanent'*

*mostly because if we did what I'D like to, to barbarians who attack because of hate, it would take the Mayo Clinic to sort out how many people had attacked.

Its called open carry, there is a reason why the so called 'wild west' actually had a much lower per capita murder rate than many modern cities. :D

I'm curious about gun laws. I'm familiar that it is illegal to keep a concealed weapon at all times. So could you explain how you're able to carry it outside then legally?

Every state allows the personal carrying of a firearms in some fashion. 48 states require some sort of permit, Alaska does not require a permit. Some states allow the firearm to be openly carried while other states such as Texas requires the gun to be totally hidden. The laws in cities may vary, some require you to get approval from Local LE. In some cities such as SF or NYC, only celeberties and politicians can easily get permits while the general public can not easily get permits to protect themselves. This is ironic because many celeberties who get permits are vehemently anti gun for the rest of us.

You know Kulindahr, even though I live in Europe where we don't have a gun culture, I absolutely agree you.

Not exactly true, Europe has a fine hunting and Shooting tradition. Switzerland especially; France, Germany, Belgium, and Britain have a long prestigious history of fin gunmaking. There are millions of shooters in Europe, they are not as visible as in the states because we have firearms political groups. In europe, getting guns and hunting is tough because of permits, byt is possible.

Yes I know that. What I said is that it's not part of our culture in the same way as it is in the US.

I'm not really out and i'm not really an "obvious gay, but I do admit that all these suicides and bashings we are hearing about are starting to make me a little nervous and the idea of owning a gun did cross my mind, even though guns themselves make me a little nervous and all the legal and self defense law red tape kinda put me off.

But really though it might be a good idea to carry if you can seeing as most homophobes are freaking pussy ass cowards who either attack in groups or pairs or with weapons, so the only equalizer might be to have a gun.

Funny that homophobes think they are being so manly and strong trying to pick on things they perceive as "weak".

I have a message to all homophobes who may be reading this and especially to the ones who gay bash. If you are such a man, why don't you just go find a gay dude and take him on one on one, why do you have to get a pack or pair or weapons?

I mean if you're such a man and can kill any "fag" why not one on one, good old fashioned combat? truth is most homo bashers are freaking pussies!

I was going to make a whole thread about this, but since this topic is about hate crimes and related to what I was gonna post, I'll just put it here.

I've been thinking about it alot as of late with all these gay suicides and gay bashings going on. Do you ever wonder if a guy you meet online or in a club might really be a gay basher looking for prey? like pretending to be gay so he can get you back to his place and kill you? I know back where i'm originally from there were a few cases of this happening. I'm really starting to wonder and it's making me slightly nervous! the person you think you know could be posing as a gay man looking for prey.

I don't mean to sound like an alarmist, but I wouldn't put it past SERIOUS homophobes who want to crack some "fag skulls". I believe matt sheperd was killed by two guys posing as gay in a gay bar. I also worry about going out to gay clubs wondering if a pack of nut bars will pop out somewhere or be waiting by my car or some such. I am seriously going to maybe look into gun laws and see about trying to get a fire arm, but even that is kinda scary because many cops are corrupted and with the lame ass self defense laws you could be getting into more trouble defending yourself than it's worth. Life sucks sometimes!

Even if you dont want to carry, i highly recommend you get training and become comfortable wih a gun. Its a highly rewarding hobby imo.

True. But there are places where open carry is a hassle. There's a town here where if you're carrying openly, you WILL be stopped for something even if they have to make it up.

Twenty years ago I could pedal along major streets between my residence at college and a gunsmith shop run by a friend or firearms supply store run by his business partner, and cops just waved. And at an security equipment firm, I worked next to a gal from Vermont where kids would take their .22 rifles to school either for shooting club or so they wouldn't have to go home before going shooting after classes -- and the kids would stop by Dairy Queen after shooting, park their rifles in the back corner of a booth, and grab ice cream.

That's civilization.

I'm curious about gun laws. I'm familiar that it is illegal to keep a concealed weapon at all times. So could you explain how you're able to carry it outside then legally?

Securely. When I was at some hot spring in California and noticed cat tracks about four ties too large to be a "Here, kitty, kitty!" indicator, I retreated to my truck and strapped on my Ruger. It took an extra adjustment, because other than sandals, cap, and towel over my shoulder, the gunbelt was all I was wearing; since that left me without the ordinary secondary stabilizing methods, I had to rig something different.

I know that's not what you meant, but it's the first consideration: you want your sidearm to be an remain your sidearm. If the holster flops around, if the gun isn't snug in it, if you can't block and cover if someone tries to reach for it, you're doing it wrong, and just inviting someone who wants to misuse your firearm to make use of yours -- making you a contributor to the crime, should that happen.

People talk a lot about concealed, which in forty-plus states is just a matter of telling the authorities "give me my permit", if you're a law-abiding citizen. There's training for that, but carrying openly requires at least as much training. No matter how you carry, you're responsible for your firearm; when it's in plain sight, that means you have to be constantly alert; while it's concealed, the alert level is much lower since something close to 100% of the people around won't even know you have the thing (there are people trained to see concealed firearms , so there's no perfection; "concealed" tends to mean "not evident to a casual observer"). I've worn openly in a large mall a couple of times, and while seven-eighths of the people didn't even notice, the reactions of some who did left me with a high enough alert level it was a definite exercise in discipline (the only bother I got from anyone official was a discussion with a security gal about the usefulness of different firearms in such a situation; I got one question about what I'd doing if I heard screams from a nearby store, which led then to tactical considerations).

Anyway, any law saying you can't carry openly is immoral and without foundation, on the face of it. The right to carry with your your chosen means for defense of self and others is inherent; to tell citizens they can't exercise it without penalty is to reclassify them from citizen to property. Two states I'm aware of actually understand this; there, you carry as you please -- that's just a beginning to honoring the Second Amendment, though.

That brings to mind an interesting item: back at the mall, I wasn't "awake" yet. Not, with hate attacks part of the possible repertoire of what I might have to respond to, I have to acknowledge that my tactical skills need some updating -- just some; responding as though someone had just tried to take my weapon ought to be close enough.

It's nice that haters are, as someone noted, for the most part cowardly pussies. That means they're not likely to attack where there are back-drop issues (meaning not lots of bystanders to worry about, primarily). If you're going to carry, that's a constant, high-priority consideration: unless your life is in direct danger, making sure you don't hit innocent bystanders is an absolute (always hope, if you get bashed in a crowd, that there's a ceiling above you that's the bottom side of a roof -- then you can drop and shoot straight up through the bastards).

Anyway... you can carry openly because it's your right as a human being. Some places they won't even hassle you for it.

I think about it often enough. Short of martial arts training, I figure it's just something I have to live with.

A golf course is a waste of a fine rifle range.

Nah. A golf course is an experience in having to deliver your projectile manually.

BTW, ever heard of Frisbee golf? Imagine using handguns instead.....
