Gays in Italy?

I'm planning on going to Europe and spending a lot of time over in Italy, but I'm a little worried about how they regard gays over in Europe... My information might be bad, because I know no one in Italy or who has been there, sorry if I offended anyone...

(also on a slightly minor note, how do people in Italy regard Americans?)

Depends where you go, as with everywhere. The more rural places will more likely to be a bit more hostile than the cities with reggards to bummers.

I'm an Italian American. But I didn't find the Italians to be especially welcoming. In fact, they are downright Xenophobic. I'll never forget trying to ask a little old lady for directions. She told me to go to the Vatican and ask someone there. At the time I was about two miles from the Vatican.

in Paris was a whole other story, and don't get me started about Madrid...

I was there a few years ago and loved it. There is a very chic gay club in Rome not far from the Coliseum. I remember that it has a rooftop bar. One of the differences you will find from Germany, for example, is that many Italians don't speak English. In fact at that rooftop bar this beautiful man and I were cruising each other, but he spoke only Italian. Finally, I decided to try some Spanish. I pointed at him and asked "su casa" and he smiled and we were off. That reminds me - all of them think they are tops.

I had no problems whatsoever.

The closest I got to the gay "scene" when I was living in Florence was walking past multiple bathhouses each day.

What I've heard is that it depends on where you're at in Italy. The north and the south are said to be quite different in terms of mentality. And also, like someone has pointed out already, it depends on weither you're in a bigger city or a smaller town.

Btw, are you planning on coming to Hungary? It's pretty close to Italy and the gay scene, in Budapest, is pretty active.

Also I'm only 19, I'm not sure how bars work over there, would being that young present a problem?

Not all that tolerant. Depends on where you're at but, generally speaking, although it's not highly homophobic I would say it's SOMEWHAT tolerant but not a whole lot...the strong influence of the Church, the family oriented and macho-men mentality that's still very much present there, as it is in Mediterranean countries, are huge obstacles to a more open minded Italy.

Even what you've just said also proves how not all that tolerant it is..."a lof of the guys are closeted", if it was quite tolerant there wouldn't be as much closeted guys.


Anyway...


Artisticboy, I think there's this card you can buy that'll give you access to all the gay clubs and bars in the entire country for a full year or so. Can't remember the name of the card though.

I go skiing every year with about 70 gays from all over Italy and always have a great time... in fact I'll be busy doing that all next week

Italy is one of the best places to be, gay or otherwise. The people are great and so is the food. You shouldn't have any problems.

All the major cities have gay venues and you won't have any difficulty finding them. If you're over 18 you can go anywhere. Milan and Rome are the best places to be (IMO) if you're gay.

Again, if you're in Milan or Rome, there are sports associations that are a good way to start networking in the gay scene there. Italians are very friendly and interested in other people, especially foreigners, so you'll have immediate contact. They are also very correct and inclusive of others; even if they didn't particularly like you they would still make sure that you weren't left alone.

I don't think it really matters where you come from; as a general rule Americans are well liked. Again, don't worry.
