Girl face it, it 'aint happening in our lifetimes. Obama's people are telling him not to touch it! Mark my words. Gays will be the last group to be subjected to continued legal discrimination in this area, for three reasons: they don't wants us; they don't need us; and they won't have us!

Sad to say, you're probably right. I'm gonna hold out judgment for a little while longer though.

they don't wants us; they don't need us; and they won't have us!

I daresay the third reason is merely a product of the 1st reason, however as for the second reason, as far as i am aware the US military is horribly overstretched to the point it is implementing 'stop loss' protocols, so whilst they may be turning away (for the approximate sake of argument) 10% of potential new recruits because they dont want them, they sure as hell need them.

What is wrong with Americans that they can't do the very simple thing that so many other militaries have done; just accept people who are prepared to go into harm's way for their country...

...but what about the foxholes...

As far as I can tell, the whole thing is predicated on idiots (who most of us wouldn't touch,) who're terrified they'd say yes if you hit on them.

I had a friend like that, I came out immediately almost everything I'd say, he took as a proposition. I'm not kidding, I'd say:

You want a beer?

He'd say:

Are you trying to get me drunk?

Yeah , not really friends anymore.

I am trying to be positive for our men and women wearing the military uniforms............there is a case heading towards the US Supreme Court............

Rebuffing the Air Force, a federal appeals court on Thursday kept alive a challenge brought by a former military nurse to the armed forces’ "don’t ask, don’t tell" policy on gays.

The action by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals allows a challenge filed by Margaret Witt, a former McChord Air Force Base nurse who attained the rank of major, to move forward.

............good luck Margaret............

But how can one country have so many idiots? I mean it obviously doesn't affect everyone, but why are the idiots in charge there?

First of all maybe some WANT gays not allowed in the Military. If there is a draft.. "I" have to fucking GO! I get aggravated by these gay activists I mean I can see their point and they wanna go to war and crap thats nice but what if there is a draft for a war? I'll be forced to go against my will because gays wanted to go fight for the USA. Many gays fighting for it don't really wanna go.. they argue with the policy just so they CAN. Its like an ego thing.

There are plenty of idiots everywhere. Blame US machismo culture, misogyny, and religion.

The great hypocrisy is that there are a lot of gay people in the military taking showers with all the haters. The haters just don't know it.

Pretend you're an idiot, maybe they won't take you that way.

Sorry to sound so pessimistic. I've just been so disappointed in the past by the powerlessness of the Chief Executive to influence the prevailing military culture, and the rabid, rank, deep down, ground in homophobia in the ranks.

Yes, at the micro level, there appears to be tolerance in certain units, especially in the Air Force, but at the end of the day and when it's expedient to do so, even our most liberal men and women at arms will enthusiatically throw the fags under the tank.

That's why we need to just wait until they all die (hopefully from old age) and get a new generation untethered to the prejudices of the past.

because of the recession/depression i guess !!!
Got plenty of un-employed people to join the army.

This is somewhat related -
I recently heard about a clause in the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy. It's nicknamed 'Queen For A Day' (I guess that's geared towards men). It goes something like this - If it's found out that you've had homosexual sex (or 'relations') and it's proven that you're not actually gay and probably won't have gay sex again, you won't be kicked out.

Here it is: 10 U.S.C. subsection 654(b)
(b) Policy.— A member of the armed forces shall be separated from the armed forces under regulations prescribed by the Secretary of Defense if one or more of the following findings is made and approved in accordance with procedures set forth in such regulations:
(1) That the member has engaged in, attempted to engage in, or solicited another to engage in a homosexual act or acts unless there are further findings, made and approved in accordance with procedures set forth in such regulations, that the member has demonstrated that—
(A) such conduct is a departure from the member’s usual and customary behavior;
(B) such conduct, under all the circumstances, is unlikely to recur;
(C) such conduct was not accomplished by use of force, coercion, or intimidation;
(D) under the particular circumstances of the case, the member’s continued presence in the armed forces is consistent with the interests of the armed forces in proper discipline, good order, and morale; and
(E) the member does not have a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts.

I'm pretty sure this is the whole 'clause' - I could have missed something.
I haven't really come to an opinion about this because it's.. well... interesting.... baffling....

Telstra, that is a great avatar!! It's clever. It's cute. It's nonsense. I love it.

it is related because the military got plenty of people to recruit so they can be picky.

Everybody keeps saying Obama will do it, Obama won't do it, but it's not entirely up to him. Congress has to repeal DADT for it to happen.

And the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has already said publicly that if DADT is repealed, he'll go along with it. He's very sympathetic to allowing gays in. As are many former Pentagon bigwigs who originally were opposed.

Not to mention 75% of the American public. So the background opinion is there, it's just a question of somebody taking the first step.

So I'm predicting it's going to happen. Come back in a year and we'll see who was right...

Meh! The feeling is mutual. I don't want the military; I don't need 'em; and I won't have 'em!

(Well, maybe I would have them.)

Telstra - I don't get it. I think my comment about your avatar is completely unrelated to this thread.
Avatar, as I know it, is your 'user picture'. Ya know, the butt cheeks with the map. I like it. :-)
.

During the Vietnam War, guys would show up to the draft board in dresses and still get accepted. If they need us, they'll want us. It just won't be official.
