I have a really good friend who is in the Air Force and he just came home from Afghanistan. I was talking to him about whether or not he is planning on staying in the Air Force as a career, or not re-enlisting when his time is up.

He knows I am Gay and he said, "No offense, but if they allow gays to be out of the closet in the Air Force, I will not re-enlist."

I was totally shocked! I asked him why...

He said that one of his room mates was gay when he was in Afghanistan and he felt uncomfortable because he was afraid he was going to try and mess with him...and I understand his concern because he is a very cute guy...but just because someone is gay does not mean they want to fuck every guy they see.

I also told him, "If a gay guy took a bullet for you and saved your life, would you still feel the same way about banning gays in the military?" He didn't know how to answer that question...

I didn't really push the subject much because of the other people that were visiting with us, but I plan on talking to him next time I see him to help him understand how stupid and degrading DADT really is for Gay people in the military. I want to explain to him how people are losing their jobs and sometimes even being attacked because of it.

I just wanted to share this with you guys because this is the thoughts from one of the servicemen on the inside...and I am sure a lot of them feel the same way as him...but we must work together to provide them with the truth and facts to change their opinions.
 
Anti-gay bigotry is alive, well, and widely supported in the U.S. armed forces; from the bottom to the top. I sometimes think the military officials who have recently paid lip service to Obama's call for a dismantling of DADT may be a semi-enlightened minority.
 
Gays are permitted in the Canadian military, though a lot of soldiers aren't personally cool with it. But I know 14 dudes all fighting overseas with boyfriends waiting here at home.
 
Almost always....99.999% of the time, "No offence but" are the three words that announce a stupid idea like a chorus of trumpets at a royal coronation.. When you hear "no offence but," you know that a stupid idea is about to enter the room, in ermine-trimmed robes.

And, I know gay soldiers serving in the Canadian military, and they know how to behave. It is embarrasing - for people like this friend of yours - to have to point that out.

Tell him he's already served with openly gay men, even if he didn't know it, because he's been to Afghanistan. There he would have been in a campaign with his friends and neighbours in the Canadian military, who don't make honourable men hide who they are because a soldier is afraid of being hit on.

Damn it why are my countrymen dying for this crap when our main ally is still so fucking immature that they can't allow someone to fight for liberty and security just because they don't like tits! HINT: your military is not supposed to take morality advice from the Afghan/Taliban while ignoring the example north of the border.

And finally, tell him not to flatter himself. Please.

From my experience, straight guys really have no fucking idea how arrogant and stupid they sound they they say something like this. It's like if they walked up to a group of women and said "I know all of you want to fuck me", and was completely serious.


I've seriously had to flat-out tell straight guys that I wasn't attracted to them, and that they need to get over themselves before they were comfortable talking to me. It was nice to see how embarrassed they were when reality slapped them in the face, though.

If he does try something, report his ass for sexual harassment. Until then, try and put your homophobia aside just long enough to see that he might be there for the same damn reason you are; to serve the country, not service you!

I agree with all the other posters here in their anger and views over what you're friend said. I will add that I would expect better from a true soldier. He just insulted the men and women, his fellow soldiers, his comrades, who willingly volunteer to protect this country and each other, possibly by making the ultimate sacrifice, because he's scared a gay wants to fondle his dick in his sleep. As if gays are surreptitious, oversexed predators. You're friend is wrong, wrong, wrong. And I hope you can talk sense into him. I swear, I don't understand irrational homophobia.
 
I find it shocking that someone spends more time worrying about someone of the same sex finding them attractive than being shot at by bullets, blown up, potentially captured and violently tortured.

Oh, them gays, we can't have guys looking at one another when being shot at!
 
The same type of responses probably came in when they desegregated African Americans serving in the military in 1948 too bad alot of America still cant look past color, let alone sexual orientation.

I pointed this out to the little boys* in my karate class when a similar discussion took place. They seemed surprised that gay guys might actually have a type, and more so that they might not be it.

One of them went as far as suggesting, in all seriousness, that my thinking was "impossible. I'm everyone's type."

I'm in the USAF, my friend, who works with me in my aircraft maintenance shop is very republican, very conservative, 100% dislikes Obama...but you know what? He knows I'm gay. He's totally cool with it. He's for gay marriage and he's for DADT getting repealed. He's awesome!
