Gen Y Too Lazy & Unfocused To Hire

That's very encouraging, ravenstar. I think I know what I'll be doing come Monday morning! Cheers! :)

Every staff member that I've ever had under 30 has spent way too much time at work chit chatting on Facebook or Myspace or AIM.

Way too much time watching youtube videos, texting and reading Perez Hilton.

I believe that workers, while on company time, should always be productive in activies that will benefit the company--but (here's the caveat) that does not always mean being exclusively focused on your business as usual tasks. Many of our most technically and administratively skilled employees achieved those profeiciencies by creating downtime for themselves to explore software forums and e-books that taught them how to build better databases and devise creative business solutions. And we used to try to prevent people from bettering themselves in this way because they might process one widget less per hour in the short-term.

There are two sides to every story.

Surely this alone is grounds for not only instant dismissal but also removal of all gay card rights?

no no... I like Mario. He's always been nice to me and I "get" his schtick. I'm not the target audience at all, I'm not into the whole celebrity worship thing. But he's got his thing and it works for him.

I worked in an office where I was the youngest person by about 20 years. My coworkers were the ones watching Youtube all day.

That's why jobs work better when there's not a set time you have to be there.

In my line of work (geophysics), if we run out of work, we go home. Any overtime worked is taken as vacation time instead of paid out (but it can be paid out if you want it to be, at a rate of 1:1). I'm on a salary and need to work 40 hours per week on average to earn that, but it doesn't really feel very specific. I can come and go as I want to, as long as I get the job done. My boss doesn't care if I show up at 10:30 AM instead of 8 and leave at 4, as long as I cover the time with banked overtime (which we always have a lot of).

Another thing that's good is getting a bonus per job done. It's a salary plus bonus system, and it works out pretty well. The bonus isn't big, but it's enough incentive not to fuck around while at work. Although sometimes I just feel like unwinding and taking a 90-minute lunch, but it's not a frequent thing.
If I wanted to, I could sit around reading the news all day, but if I did that, the job STILL wouldn't be done. The data won't process and interpret itself after all!

And last but not least, mentoring and learning are chargeable time. So if I spend a few hours reading geophysical publications, or talking to my boss about some new seismic technique, or writing a program to do stuff we do faster or better or in a different way, I get paid for that time. If I run out of work, this is what I usually do (or go home).

The bottom line is that I think more jobs should work like mine do. I think it's a really good model. I think enforced start and end times are bad for morale. It's superior to say, "You have to work 40 hours per week, but WHEN you work those hours is up to you," rather than saying, "You have to work 40 hours per week exactly 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday 8 AM to 5 PM with a lunch hour from 12PM to 1PM exactly".

EDIT: I'm 25 by the way.

I work in retail so there's always something to do. Especially since all the seasonal employees are gone, now we have to do the same load of work with 3/4th's less people.

I am in Generation Y and have a great work ethic. Though if you were to ask a lady that saw me with my cell phone out yesterday, she'd probably disagree. She approached me asking for help, but I told her I was busy helping another customer and would be right with her (as I had my cell phone out). I think she thought I was lying. We don't have calculators on the salesfloor and I had to do some calculations so I could substitute a similar product for the same percentage off on a sale we had, so I used my cell phone calculator!

I have a degree in Accounting but there are not many hiring around here, and it is really competitive with those who are. Tough to compete against a guy with years of experience who lost his job and wants to gobble up an entry level position.

Getting this retail job was hard enough, the only one I could find. Tough market out there.

everyone here spend way too much time on forums.

What gen are we ?

Read the generational demarcation post....

Wasn't lazy enough to post this saying I was born into the Gen Y....
