(kind of old, but for those of you who didn't know)

ScienceDaily (Jan. 31, 2005) — In the first-ever study combing the entire human genome for genetic determinants of male sexual orientation, a University of Illinois at Chicago researcher has identified several areas that appear to influence whether a man is heterosexual or gay.

The study, which is currently available online, will be published in the March issue of the biomedical journal Human Genetics.

UIC's Brian Mustanski, working with colleagues at the National Institutes of Health, found stretches of DNA that appeared to be linked to sexual orientation on three different chromosomes in the nucleus of cells of the human male.

"There is no one 'gay' gene," said Mustanski, a psychologist in the UIC department of psychiatry and lead author of the study. "Sexual orientation is a complex trait, so it's not surprising that we found several DNA regions involved in its expression."

"Our best guess is that multiple genes, potentially interacting with environmental influences, explain differences in sexual orientation."

The genomes of 456 men from 146 families with two or more gay brothers were analyzed.

While earlier studies had focused solely on the X chromosome, one of the two sex chromosomes, the present study examined all 22 pairs of non-sex chromosomes in addition to the X chromosome. The other sex chromosome, called Y, was not explored because it is not believed to contain many genes.

Identical stretches of DNA on three chromosomes -- chromosomes 7, 8 and 10 -- were found to be shared in about 60 percent of the gay brothers in the study, compared to about 50 percent expected by chance. The region on chromosome 10 correlated with sexual orientation only if it was inherited from the mother.

"Our study helps to establish that genes play an important role in determining whether a man is gay or heterosexual," said Mustanski. "The next steps will be to see if these findings can be confirmed and to identify the particular genes within these newly discovered chromosomal sequences that are linked to sexual orientation."

Sadly... in this world, science doesn't exist in a vacuum.

The day they definitively figure out what "causes" us to be gay is the day the extermination begins.

They'll try to cure us in childhood, make laws to force teens to go to "treatments." They'll try to "fix" us prenatal and when that doesn't work, we'll be #2 behind Downs Syndrome babies when it comes to "reason for abortion."

(for the record, over 90% of fetuses that are found to have Downs Syndrome are aborted. Future gay babies will never be born.)

Adults will have all our civil rights taken away since we "chose" to stay gay and not get "cured" and be like the straights. And we have ourselves to blame. Not enough of us came out, not enough of us stood up for our rights. We never grew up thought of life as a continuous circuit party. The gay community had to rely on straight politicians to get gay rights in California and we sat back and allowed the voters to take them away from us.

If the majority will vote to roll back our marriage rights and adoption rights and our rights to work and live where we want... they'll vote away our rights to exist.

They'll enact laws to force us to be "cured." Like they do with sex offenders. To many straights, that's what we already are.

Trust me, this is just the beginning. We're the last generation of gays who get to live on our own terms.. or.. as close to our own terms as the heterosexuals will ever let us get.

I used to think finding a biological cause would make people respect us more and not be prejudiced. However, when I think about it, I find myself agreeing with you. Honestly, people forcing us to be "cured" scares me to death. I know it sounds naive, but I really wish people would realize that some people are gay, and we're perfectly normal. There is no need to "cure" us.

Uhhh.... If homosexuality rises im sure it could be bad for the human species, as mean as it sounds its going against natural instinct... Wouldnt you like to fix it if you could be as attracted to females as you were to males now and have a true chance to make a family of your own, our "purpose" in life?

Sounds like a twilight Zone TV series or Sci Fi movie ........ hollywood should make the movie.

Hollywood is a good place to prevent the "gay gene" research.

No. Actually, I wouldn't.

First.. MY natural instinct is attraction to men. I see no need to change that. Why would I want to be something I'm not?

If your "purpose" in life is just to make more life, I feel sorry for you.

And I DO have a family of my own, thanks.

I honestly don't even think it has to do with genes.

I think we just look at whoever and say to ourselves "Damn. I want to be with them!"

No more no less, considering how many "bisexual/curious" people there are out there.

Maybe you are right. How can they get rid of the genes who are:
20% gay, 30% gay, 50% gay, 80% gay, 90% gay or 100% gay.

So i don't think there is much to worry about.

Anyway, i still think gay brain and female brains are similar hence they can't separate to two.

And you know this how?

Look at any living thing they have an instinct to survive and an instinct for the survival of its species (breeding), if they dont they cease to exist. Specific gene(s), if they exist - are stunting the potential to breed....therefor going against instinct.

Yes. It COULD be, but most likely won't, considering the undeniable fact that we do not need to mate to put the pudding in the oven.

I mean. We have the ability to jerk off, so no need for direct injection.

yeah true..but that'd be a very unhealthy world to live in i think. Personally i'd much rather be raised by straight parents than two males or females... I think both masculine and feminine sides are very important to a childs development and psychological wellbeing.

True but the world is not perfect.
Straight couples could produce serial killer babies.

Wouldn't it be cool if the reverse happen? You know, like in X-Men. A cure would be proposed - it would be this big disaster, war - but we could form this group of vigilante, militant queers who go around injecting people with gay. :)

The Vagiban is already an active militia

unclean i agree to an extent that perhaps some homosexuality might be good, but i think grandparents/other mothers generally support the growing family the most. The mind is certainly there for a reason though.
