That was the largest increase in power and spending by the US government. It could easily be curtailed and save billions each year.
 
Yeah because it's not the spending the pubs object to, it's the spending on the poor, who of course are worthless, shiftless, and quite possibly muslim, communist, sleepers who hate our freedom.

Looks like the House is going to vote on the Boehner/Pelosi bill and send it to the Senate where many of the dem Senators agreed last year to the $1 million and above increase in taxes.

Could be an embarrassing time for dem's and Obama if the Senate does or doesn't pass the bill. Depends on how the media spins it.

Not if they go with Obama's latest offer. It's "fair and balanced", and a fair step in the right direction. Will it solve everything? Hardly -- but it will improve things in a way that will show that things can actually be solved. That will give confidence, and an attitude suitable for doing more.

I hope that "more" will include the Republicans agreeing to pass the job bills they killed before -- that five million more jobs would be very welcome (though it will play hell with the unemployment figures, because more people will move from "discouraged" to "looking for work".

Weird, how adding a pile of jobs could actually increase the unemployment rate.

The man will never agree to seriously needed spending cuts.

His proposal is agreeing to seriously needed spending cuts.

And the Republicans, if they go with it, will be agreeing to seriously needed revenue increases.

The trick is, once he's agreed to cuts, that it will be easier to get him to agree again. And the trick is also to make a good step, and let the economy adjust, then make another step and let the economy adjust. Hopefully after three or four such deals, we'll have a budget surplus, and can start doing the honorable and conservative thing: paying down the debt.

Starting with China, because the interest we're paying them is funding their military expansion.

Actually, we could do with selling off a fair bit of federal land in the western states. It would put money in the treasury, and put land on the tax rolls for those states.

Better yet, let's require every department of the Federal government to accept a 5% cut in budget every year for the next five or ten years. No exceptions.
