Have to get my four wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow. Not being put to sleep either, wide awake...just lidocaine shots in the gums. :(

has anyone else gotten theirs pulled without being put out? I'm kind of dreading it. ](*,)
 
OMG. YIKES.

I was sedated and had all 4 done at the same time. I don't think I would have done it awake. Is there a reason they aren't sedating you? If you don't mind me asking that is.

Just a suggestion. Ask them to give you the liquid form of the pain medication they are prescribing after the procedure. It's much easier to swallow liquids for a few days. Especially until the lidocaine wears off.

Really hope everything goes well.

I see no reason to get sedated......as in "knocked out".
Don't let the "worst case" scenarios in your OTHER thread scare you because that is what they ARE: worst case
I've had three pulled on separate occasions without ANY trouble at ALL and never felt a thing.
I have to assume your dentist knows what he's doing.
If you are scared shitless ASK for nitrous too.
I will NEVER EVER have my teeth cleaned again without it. It's worth EVERY CENT!...... ;)
 
Honestly, I think most people insist on being "knocked out" because they're such HUGE babies when it comes to dental work. If it doesn't hurt and I can't feel it, then I honestly don't mind at all; I had a bond put on without any analgesia, because it didn't even hurt a bit. Trust me.

You'll be fine.
 
I have, but only one at a time. It's not so bad, except for the smell. At first I thought it was the dentist I was smelling and then realized it was me :eek: .
 
Had all 4 pulled with only local freezing. All was good 'til the 4th as the freezing had let go there. The DDS was looking right at me and noticed the wince. All was OK after another shot and 10 min. of wait.
 
Just had 'em (all 4) pulled this morning. At 0915, I was given local anesthetic...he started to pull them at 0930, he was done by 0939. I'll never forget the painless prying, scraping, cracking, popping sounds that were heard & felt (pressure) as he pulled them out. I was given a Rx for extra strength vicodin. The numbness in my lower lip, tongue and chin was last to wear off. I got home, took two vicodin, slept. Four hours later I felt minor pain in gums, so I took another pill. I slept a lot today. I had a migrane for about three hours after the procedure!
 
Glad to hear your doing fairly well. Keep taking the medicine as needed. don't let the pain get a head of you. I've done that before and it sucks playing catch up. Hopefully the vicodin will keep the migraine knocked down as well.

Cool! Not so bad, then.

I HAD to be knocked out since my 4 wisdom teeth had big roots, etc. Took an hour to get them out. But it was great, I slept through it and had NO pain after at all. I wanted to go body surfing that afternoon, but my Mom told me I wasn't getting in the ocean with 4 bleeding holes in my mouth. LOL! I felt totally fine!

Long story short, Dentistry has come a looong way. Awake or asleep, it's pretty much painless. I even look forward to having my teeth cleaned. It never hurts at all.

Anyone that may read this: Don't be scared. It's pretty much NOTHING nowadays. Now.... 35 years ago..... SHUDDER!!!
 
The only thing that sucks, is three of my wisdom teeth are impacted. The bottom two are horizontally impacted and unerupted, and everyone tells me that removing these kinda of teeth cause the most pain and swelling; They have to drill into the bone and take the teeth out in pieces.

Mine were like that. Like I said, they knocked me out. Because of this, the nerves were asleep too. No pain at all after. I had a dull soreness, but that was it.
I did not need any of the pain pills at all.

I had one regular tooth pulled a few years ago.... just a shot and a wiggle. Done. Never felt it. I hate to admit it, but I love my dentist. He's very good.

Then they'll either put you out or give you enough local anesthetic to make it painless. If anything hurts at all, be VOCAL! YES BE VERY FUCKING VOCAL!

AND I MEAN IT! :)

I'm very resistant to Novocaine, and I always have to ask them to stop and inject me at least once again (and they never listen the first time when I tell them "I'm going to need more of this than you normally give on the first shot"). They sometimes roll their eyes when I request a second or third round, but when it comes to the pain of dental work vs the pain of having someone who didn't listen in the first place roll his or her eyes, I'd take the latter any day.

I've talked to many people who say things like "yeah, the root canal really started to hurt, but I didn't want to interrupt them." I can't fathom where these people are coming from. That's either politeness run-amok or an utter failure to understand that we no longer live in the 19th century (at least with regards to dentistry).
 
My dentist told me to raise my left hand if I felt any pain what so ever, cause he would stop the procedure & give me another shot in the site. He did a damn good job givin me the numbing shot in the first place. I didn't feel an ounce of pain during the procedure. My dentist is a DDS., they don't put ppl out at that office, local anesthesia only. It all went well. I had the biggest roots he's ever seen! He was also shocked that they came out intact. Took 9 min total for all teeth.

But when you are sufficiently numb it doesn't matter.
My dentist had to split one of my teeth to pull it. I never felt a thing.......just didn't like HEARING the cracking....... :grrr:
 
i got them pulled pretty early, before they even broke the skin, so i recovered same day, ate a turkey dinner that night lol. but make sure you get put under with anesthesia (some people are conscious with a numb mouth that'd freak me out a couldn't do it!!)
 
Nope. I told the dentist I didn't want to feel any pain. I was gassed and numbed. Good thing too! One tooth broke off as he was yanking it out!
 
I had two pulled when I was 18 years old, no problem wasn't knocked out, felt pretty good the next day. Then 12 years later I had the other two pulled, they told me that because I was older I might not recover as quickly, I didn't believe them. Wow what a difference, i was in severe pain for several days.

Haha, I think most dentists are very used to watching the patient to make sure they aren't feeling any pain. When I had my dental bond on, no anesthetic was required at all, and if I even gave the slightest movement or jump (the sound of the machines startled me) they would stop right away and ask me a few times if I felt anything. I felt completely in control the entire time.

Oh, I know that. . .i'm just talking about the swelling, bleeding and pain you get in the days when you're recovering from the surgery; People have showed me how much their jaw swells up when they get impacted wisdom teeth removed, and they said that they kept swallowing blood for about two days because the holes wouldn't stop bleeding.

It's good to know that your extraction went fine :)

When I had mine, I had all four done and was knocked out. I remember waking up and fighting with my dad because I thought I was fine. I got out of the car and fell. Luckily the car was parked and I landed on the lawn -.-;

Actually,I probably should be glad I was knocked out. I don't think I'd do too well just sitting there during the surgery if I couldn't wait for my dad to help me out of the car. lol
