Why would you ever be too old to get fit?

I think if you want to get fit, more power to you, regardless of your age.

I used to think that at 26. I had a self image of being fat and doughy. Now 40 years later I look back and think to myself--if only I'd started getting fit at 26, my life would have turned out differently--more sex, more guys, more fun. Get your ass to the gym immediately! Do not pass go and do not collect $200

I started working out at 40. Now, six years later, I'm in the best shape of my life. I wish I'd started younger but I'm glad I'm not just starting now. Getting in shape will probably be the best thing you will ever do if you stick with it. I can't recommend it enough!!!

26 is a brilliant age to get fit. There's nothing you can't do at that age.

I'm 41 and I'm a personal trainer. It's the mental attitude you need to get right, whatever age you are. But certainly - 26 is no barrier.

There is no wrong age to get fit.

I am 24 and still getting fit, in fact I am currently training mostly for cardio over muscle mass to join the defence forces here.

Come on sub 12m 2.4km run... :( still killing me to hit the 13 minute mark because I haven't mastered my breathing yet.

26 is perfect and you will benefit greatly.

By all means start now. 26 is a great age. Your body is still producing growth hormone and plenty of testosterone. You can increase muscle cells.Or fat cells which will make it hard to stay thin the rest of your life. As you grow older the body will produce fewer hormones. Harder to gain muscle, harder to lose fat.

I think you got your answer :)

go do it

keep us posted

By the way, we likey progress pics.

Ok I started Jogging today.
.

Good for you.

And believe me - 20 years from now you will think you were so young at 26!

Just build yourself a routine you can live and grow older with - a lot of the guys I knew that were the super jocks / buff in high school and college are now way overweight and out of shape because what they did for exercise (football, etc.) is not something you can do everyday in your 40's...

4 x 4min!!

you mean 6 x 2 minute :| ? wait are we talking about the laps of an athletic oval or something else?

No, it's interval training. Pretty easy, and you get great result.

You basically run stretches of 4 min, then rest for 30 secs and run another 4 min.
Repeat until your at 4x4.
The aim is to run the same distance in the last 4 min as you did in the first.

Its effective training, and can be fun aswell. I alternate between these and just plain jogging, and I run 3km in 11.00 min no sweat.

I will have to give that a try.

Lately I have been having to run on the treadmill, so have been cycling between 9km/h as a 'jog' where I can recover my breath
13km/h as a 'medium run' where I can maintain it for 400-800m before having to drop back a bit
15.5-16km/h as a 'slow sprint' where I can run for 200-400m before having to drop right back to 9km/h to catch my breath

I did 2.4km in 12.52 the other morning though, still plenty of improvement.

Doing interval training which is basically anaerobic exercise does wonders for calorie burning and avoiding reaching that dreaded exercise plateau. Highly recommend going to a local running track and doing that.

Seems like you are on your way.
I'd advice cardio and core strength exercises to get the fat % down in the low 20's.
Anyways, the calculators you find online are hardly accurate.

Let me know if you need some ideas for exercises or other advice!

CE.
