"Getting to know you...

Not really, I mostly grow fruit trees, but I'm running out of room, so growing vegetables is starting to look desirable. The only vegetable I have growing now is two boniato (Cuban sweet potato) vines that someone gave me at a Rare Fruit Council meeting. Botanically it's closely related to the sweet potato, but I bought one once at the store, and it is white inside like a potato, and has a similar texture. It has a bit of a sweet taste, but otherwise is rather bland, having neither the flavor of a potato nor the sweet potato. You're better off buying potatoes or sweet potatoes from the store.

Oh, and I do have a cassava growing, but it's mainly just to see what growing one is like, and I'm not particularly interested in harvesting the tuber when it's ready. And my cousin gave me some Seminole pumpkin seeds, which I'll plant if I ever get around to it. Seminole pumpkins are a kind of gourd, sort of like butternut squash, which, unlike most members of the pumpkin family, thrives in the Florida heat. After all, it developed down here before the arrival of the Europeans.

And then there is the pigeon pea, which is commonly planted around here by people from the Bahamas, parts of the Caribbean, and even Pakistan. My ex's grandmother used to grow them, so I know it will do well here. People try to grow vegetables that do well up north, usually with mixed results.
