My Ex's husband had a hip replacement with what turned out to be a defective product. He had been in tremendous pain, and my Ex pushes him around in a wheelchair in public. I believe he had to have another operation to get it replaced. Also, the daughter-in-law of a woman in my Writers' Group had the wrong size hip put in, which had to be replaced, and went through several years of problems. The last I saw of her, she looked much better, so hopefully her problems are behind her.

All this makes me think that if a doctor wants to replace a major bone like that, I'm going to make him prove to me that it's absolutely necessary, and there are no alternatives.

But I would be intimidated by any language which has innumerable characters and no linguistic connection to any European language. I would find Arabic (which may not turn out to be so bad, since they put al- in front of everything), Hindu, Urdu, Chinese (which has over 600 characters), Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, and the like.
