Giffords to resign from Congress

I'm really amazed that she stuck with it as long as she did considering everything she's been through. I wish her the best as well.

A sad reality. :(

Maybe there's a future for her in politics in Arizona once she recovers even more. Just because she's leaving now, it doesn't mean she'll never lead again.

Once she fully recovers, I think she should run for Governor and replace that crackpot who is in office now. Giffords seems like a level headed person, and had some good ideas for immigration reform that didn't involve demolishing the Constitution and due process.

I wish her a complete recovery. She's a strong individual and this decision shows character.

The current governor is in her last term, a 6 year term. Yes, 6 years. Obama nominated our last governor, Janet Napolitano, for the Homeland Security post. And Brewer, as state treasurer (we don't have a Lt. Governor), was the second highest ranking politician so she finished Napolitano's last two years and was reelected to this 6 year term.

I would wonder what Brewer, an evangelical, really thought of Napolitano, a lesbian.

I wish her well, and hope she one day returns to politics.

I too wish Representative Gabby Giffords the best of luck on her journey to full recovery. I am glad that she has finally stepped down. While she appeared to have a lot of support from within her district to stick around, her constituents would be better served having an active Representative. (*8*)

Good luck to you Representative Giffords! I wish you a speedy recovery.

It's remarkable how well she's done already. ..|

I hope politicians (or those pseudo-politicians) don't use crosshairs in their political advertising anymore.

Kinda sad.

I keep thinking that if she was fully recovered by now, Obama should boot Biden and pick her as Veep.

I'm proud of the folks in Congress for waiting for her to be able to make her own decision. Now I hope she makes it back enough to be making decisions in Congress once again.

Way to make a non partisan thread .....

Partisan

Typical

Best wishes to Rep. Giffords

I'd join you in that. I'd prefer that we address issues.

Being governor would be a step down. She should run for the Senate when she's back at 100%. Regardless, her future is bright whatever she chooses to do.

All politics aside for just a moment....

She has proven herself to be a *remarkable* woman with an incredible spirit to recover from her horrible injuries. (And God bless her husband for staying by her side...)

I wish her all the best.

Actually historically speaking being a governor or senator have equal chances at moving on to the Presidency or in other words the position being a move forward or upwardly mobile spot. Of all our Presidents 41 have been representatives.

I would say Governors have a much greater impact on this country than any group of Senators ever thought about. Look at what is going on currently with the removing of gains from union feeding frenzies at the public trough. Both Democrats and republicans Governors are doing that work and earned benefits are being stripped across the country.

During the same time period NOTHING substantial is being accomplished in the Senate.

All of that aside it goes without saying that I hope this women recovers fully. She is part of the Navy family and is a very strong minded and strong willed individual. I have no doubt we will hear form her again. Although it may not be in politics.

does she actually have any qualifications beyond getting shot in the face?

spending a year in the House of Representatives usually isn't a springboard to being a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

she's definitely a courageous woman, but I think she's making the right decision here. her constituents deserve to have some representation in Congress.

That's really rather uncalled for, don't you think?:(

^ some things just come out wrong

It's just that while everyone has sympathy for her and her family - and for all of the victims .......

there has not been a whole lot of deep dive into her qualifications, successes, etc.

because now is not the time

hopefully she recovers fully and if she wants to return to politics, she can

at which point those things will be addressed

maybe my language could have been better ;)

if this tragedy had never happened, looking only at her life and work experiences on their own merits, would anyone have floated the idea of Giffords for VP?

Considering some of the VP candidates in the past couple elections, she (Giffords) would have made a great VP.

Sad but I felt it was inevitable. I hope she enjoys her free time.

Likely not.

But in terms of helping the ticket, right now she'd be great -- and I think she'd be a definite improvement over Biden.

It would also be a sign that the Democrats are ready to start honoring the whole Bill of Rights, not just pieces of it. She's a total flip-side from McCain, who doesn't like any if it -- something we haven't seen in Washington from either party in quite a while.

She is lucky to be alive after what occured a year ago. Ms. Gifford has suffered the pain of being shot by a deranged individual. Her courage to endure the pain she has endured for past year. A tought choice to make but her health and welfare comes first.
