How pathetic. In your silly and shrill effort to smear the NYT, you simply reveal yourself as the extremist partisan that you are. The NYT is in fact very much an institution -- no other newspaper has amassed the 75+ Pullet Surprises that the Times has, not even close. (Oh! I know! Now you have to smear the Pullet Surprise in order to be consistent with your crazy-assed lunatic mentality.) Well, so-called "believe" as you wish out there in kookyland, fact is, normal people (which doesn't, obviously, include the wacked fringe) think otherwise. How sad it is, really, how sad it is that in support of your weird ideology you must stain and splatter all that is good about America. Is it any wonder your strange and queer beliefs are reviled by almost all Americans?

Pullet Surprise?

Whatever s/he's been doing, it isn't fact checking, that much is clear. Gosh, I really hate fibbers.

Oh, that's just the age-old conservative gimmick of expecting everyone else to prosecute their case for them. "The facts are available, all you have to do is look for them." I say (and I think you agree) that if you've got the facts, you present them yourself.

^ From our very own CE&P Rules of Engagement:

Use citations where appropriate. Members are strongly urged to document their sources when available. If you have to spend time defending the veracity of your source, you're not likely to have a successful discussion of your topic. Source citation also helps keep everyone honest when posting supposedly factual information. No warning points action will be taken for failure to provide source citations but many readers may discount your position if you fail to back up your assertions. If the issue or source material is contentious, threads may be closed until documentation is provided.

Pass the hankie

I hear violins

Oh the absurdity of it all

The NYT is not an American institution as it does NOT represent the people rather the narrow mindedness of its editorial board - which is pathetically partisan and each and every day proves it with their articles, editorials and now advertising decisions

Have a good cry Iman

:(

Everyone in Washington reads the Times, leaders in every capital in the world read the Times, everyone of consequence reads the Times. How do you define an institution?

Rupert reads the Times even as he lusts to own it and then sells the Post to the Willy Lomans riding the train.

rich white liberal males read the NYT

no one outside of NYC, Wash DC and outside of the media - in the U.S. - reads the NY Times

that "everyone in wash" reads it - kinda ruins it right? - cause we all know wash dc is broken right?

that's ur way of defending the NYT "everyone is wash dc" reads it

woooo hooooooooooo

The NYT is great for packing though - putting breakables in boxes when ur moving - great paper for that

I will not respond to Alfie's personal attacks - which r coming hot and heavy - he is apparently "in heat" - I get it

^^ Well it should be acknowledged that the NYT is often regarded as a national newspaper of record, meaning that it is frequently relied upon as the official and authoritative reference for modern events.

If it's so insignificant by the standards that you've set forth, then why all of the hand wringing?

Sorry. !oops!

I had to ask.

i will repeat myself

r u kidding?

Petreaus = Bush = Republican

this is political advertising - pure and simple

any attempt to suggest otherwise is patently disingenuous

P O L I T I C S

doesn't make it bad

but it is what it is

at least admit it

:p

If that was the case, then the post above is a political ad and you have to report making it. Expressing political opinions is what those whacky Americans call "Free Speech."

Just the same as when I say I think your head is full of shit. It's just an opinion.

Your ignorance, it cramps conversation and makes any discourse trite and meaningless.

As I understand things, "Industry Standards" determine the newspaper of record. It's usually represented by any newspaper that has a daily circulation of between 500,000 to 1,000,000 papers per day.

Some could argue that The National Inquirer could be the "newspaper of record" based upon those statistic alone, however I understand that to be a "weekly" paper, and not a daily. Not to mention that there are apparent standards of journalism which are taught throughout all of the major universities that put that paper into the "tabliod" section.

i have no problem with their articles and edits being liberal

Which part? People denying that the NYT is liberal, or because of your apparent public bias toward the New York Post? :)

they're closet liberals

be who u r

and be proud of it

nyt is pathetic

I heard an interview on NPR the other day with the Editor-In-Chief of the New York Times, and he admitted that the "editorial board has a liberal bent," but he argued that "we try extremely hard to be more balanced in our approach to content everywhere else within our paper."

(Sorry I don't have any cites, I've done a first tier search, and frankly you've already claimed that it's a "liberal" paper so why should I bother trying to refute it? Editorial speaking they are.)

Would you feel better if more members cited quotes from the LA Times, The Boston Globe, or the Chicago Times?

How about more quotes from more "conservative" papers like The Wall Street Journal, or The Washington Post?

Because frankly? The New York Post, as well as The National Enquirer insult my intelligence. ;)

Sorry, I'm being honest here.

This is the way that I see it:

When partisan groups or magazines label newspapers "liberal" or "conservative," these labels are often biased and not valid or reliable.

Because attempts made by partisans to determine the ideology of a newspaper are themselves biased, reliance on such "findings" will mislead more than enlighten.

The asserted conservatism or liberalism of a newspaper varies with the ideology of the person reading it and the measurements or methods used. If a newspaper is "assigned" an ideology, either validity, or reliability, or both, must be sacrificed.

You can read more about this here:

It's some interesting reading.

The only daily newspaper that I read is the Dallas Morning News.

Honestly I think that it's a pretty "conservative" newspaper because they almost always endorse the "Republican" candidate that's running for office, regardless of whether they're the incumbent or not.

The New York Times has a record of not "endorsing" candidates, and to my knowledge has no interest or perceived interest in shaping public policy.

If anything they've been complicent and duped on many occasions by the Bush Administration, especially in the lead up to the war with Iraq.

Why would a "liberal" paper do that?

Rupert reads the Times even as he lusts to own it and then sells the Post to the Willy Lomans riding the train.

Even in Corpus Christi, Tx, the nearby HEB grocer had a NYTimes stand out by the Houston Chronicle, San Antonio Express and Austin Statesman. If the Times is read down here then it must be an institution!!!(!)

You need to read my last post, and I may add. I have friends in San Antonio , Houston, Austin and yes even here in Corpus Christi, that read the Times.:gogirl:

^ See you can't even get the Dallas Morning News down in Corpus Christi, Texas but you can get the New York Times!

..|

I guess more than just people in D.C. and New York city read it! ;)

Okay, so, here's the circulation of the top 200 newspapers in the country.
Audit Bureau of Circulation
USA Today has the highest circ. . . simply because it's a freebie rag that gets dumped outside hotel room doors, given away at airlines, available at coffee shop counters, etc. Nobody would actually BUY a USA Today. The only reason anyone reads it is because it's free (I know, they publish a subscription price. . . but do you really know anyone who pays for it???).
Second is Wall Street Journal. It's read because of its business coverage and it's considered the "pulse" of the stock market.
Third. . . New York Times. It's read nationwide. I've never visited a newstand where it wasn't prominently available. Heck, it's in every 711, CircleK, QuikeeMart, etc. Walgreens? Right by the checkout counter. And you CAN'T get it "free" (at least not legally).
