OMG...GMC is talking the demise of their pontiac division. good god, among my first cars was a firebird and a goat. talk about end of another era, who'd of ever thought it? :(

oh no, not my jimmy...no, no, no. dump the f***ing chevy truck but gotta keep that gmc name plate. your idea is almost sacriligious, like sayind do away with caddies too. saturns, saturns, saturns...what loss there? :p

damn keeland, i know/knew about the chevy/pontiac mirror identities but you tidbit about the change in 1955 was really interesting, thx for sharing.

not to hi-jack my own thread but anyone see where it looks like the chrysler/fiat thing may be (probably is) on and growing...well, they did say this would be a time of change....but jeeeez

Well back in the day they were different. Pontiac, Olds, and Buick had their own engines. In the 80's GM essentially standardized on engines. Then differences became largely cosmetic.

Yeah, but they've shared the same Fisher bodies for decades. Same body, cosmetic differences.

there were some beautiful pontiacs, weren't there? if not, try to find the 57, 58, and 59 models I believe the 59 model may have introduced the bonneville. up to that time, the star chief was the big gun.

yeah it's very sad. Pontiac has a great performance heritage (GTO, Firebird, Trans Am) which GM ultimately squandered by making their lineup nothing but FWD ugly body cladding covered versions of Chevys/Buicks/Olds/Saturns.

I think the failure of this decade's GTO is a great symbol of the failures of not just Pontiac, but GM's management, designers, and marketing gurus overall. You had all the elements of a hit, great chassis, a brilliant V-8 that made all the right ground shaking muscle car noises, sinister good looks (as the Monaro), a good race pedigree (Rolex 24 winner) and a car already bearing one of the most revered names in performance cars (Holden Monaro) rechristened with another storied performance name (the Pontiac GTO). Yet somehow it turns into homely looking market failure. Only at GM.
