Going Raw??

I have been a vegetarian since 1990. I personally do not want to go any further than being a vegetarian becuase I like to go to restaurants with friends on a regular basis. I would not be able to do that. People already think I'm strange being a vegetarian, gay, biracial, etc.....and what other label you can come up with.

I would also be concerned about being able to easily create balanced meals. I have a tough schedule and I need to eat properly without needing to really think about it.

However, I do wish you much success! Let us know how it goes if you choose to do so.

You may not agree, but I think the standard american diet is responsible for most if not all of the major health problems that plaque our society. Plus obesity is becoming a pandemic in this country.

I totally agree with you on that.

I am actually excited about this and I look forward to embarking upon this journey beginning the new year.(!) It is my resolution for the year 2007 to go completely raw.

Sorry for the smarminess of my earlier post, it was uncalled for.

Admirable goal, I wish you the best of luck.

I'm sure you've done plenty of research and are already aware of the need for supplemental vitamins.

Actually the french have a worse diet than an American, BUT they have a better and healthier heat, by drinking wine. Hmmm, that is from grapes right? If you eat out all the time atehn you have no control over trans fat etc., as you speak. Also if you shop and buy organic fruits and vegitables you will do okay! An all fruit or vegitarian diet is proven not to be much better than eating some beef, some chicken, or fish! The body gets starved for some of the vitamins etc, that a well rounded diet can offer....

My fav t-shirt says: Eat healthy, excercise, die anyway!

you may as well live on styrofoam and cardboard.

youo'll kill your internal organs, starve your muscles, slow your metabolism and eventually end up anemic.

Vegans all have that unhealthy beige skin and sunken eyes.

It's about as healthy as smoking lots of cigarettes and drinking gin.

Best bet is to eat fresh meat and vegetables.. stay organic.

Eliminate high fructose corn syrup and trans fats.

and lets not forget that all the people who've died from E coli poisoning got it from eating raw fruits or vegatables or meat.

These days, cooking your food is MUCH safer.

I know a lot of people who've been raw foodists. None of them have looked or felt healthy while doing it. I'm not saying it can't be done, but there are other ways of eating well.

Did it for a year & a half. It was phenominal. Know many people who do it. would like to get back to it. Fell into soe old patterns while helping out my oparents toward the end.
You won't get much support on this from most people. there is much info out there attacking itas well.
There are also those who approach it incorrectly. I have experienced amzing things in myself & seen it in others.
It is the most radical thing one can to today to affect positive changes on all levels. Makes most sense in every way.

Just so you know, some veggies (ie spinach) are actually BETTER for you when cooked.

They twisted the facts and are not looking at the whole picture. They are ignoring a lot of facts.

I just think that each of us need to determine what works best for themselves. And don't assume that wht the government tells you is accurate or that what you have been brought up with is correct either. Just because something works for me does not mean that it will work for everyone. I'm happy being a vegetarian. It works for me. :)

I don't think I could exist on a diet of raw fruit and vegies. For me, eating is one of the great joys in life. Eating should be about balance, variety and moderation, with care taken to exclude that which is patently unhealthy or unwholesome. I try to stick to the 2 fruit/5 vegies everyday with grains although with mangoes, paw paws (papaya), pineapples, peaches, grapes and lychees in season at the moment, I really do have a problem restricting myself to 2 fruits! And like many people with a Thai heritage, I tend to "graze", particularly with fruit.

I am not a great fan of cooked fruit so I eat that raw. I eat a lot of salads so they are usually raw but not always. Some Thai salads are warm salads. I often bake a load ot root vegetables and pumpkin - toss them in olive oil and bake in a moderate oven. They are also good to eat cold or chopped up in a salad. By cooking these, I am adding to the variety of vegetables I may eat. I can tell you that some vegies like swede, beet, taro and parsnip are not nice raw. I suppose what I am saying is that eating everything raw is too restrictive.

I use cholesterol free oils and usually stir fry most meals so I do not cook the bejesus out of everything. And different from Chinese cooking, only moderate heat is used. I eat very little red meat and usually stick to chicken (skinless) and fish. Prawns, squid and lobster I eat only on special occasions. I even allow myself occasional special treats like double chocolate cheesecake with lashings of whipped cream.

No diet on its own will ever give good health. The best diet in the world (whatever that is) will be of no benefit if tobacco, recreational drugs and an excess of alcohol are used. No diet will be beneficial unless it is accompanied by regular exercise and proper sleep.

As I said, it is all about balance, variety and moderation.

BigOne,

All the power to you, I wish you all the best on the new diet you are embarking on for 2007. I've done my experiments with being a vegeterian for a month or 2 at a time (I was basically doing a lot of indian cooking at that time). I eat meats, fruits, veggies, and dairy now. I consume at least 3 raw fruits or veggies in day and probaly the same ammount cooked.

My question to you is what is the benifit of going RAW? I don't understand what is harmful about the process of cooking. It's normal for me to eat a fresh head of steamed brocolli 3x-4x per week. Now when I steam the brocoli I dont loose anything from the vegtable yet its cooked (soft) and the steam kills any bacteria present. Is there a reason why RAW is supposed to be so better then cooked?

Thanks in advance, I'm honeslty curious about the anwser.

I have been experimenting with this way of eating on and off and I noticed I feel remarkably better when I consume only fresh fruits and vegetables and their juices made fresh with my juice extracter.

They didn't have juice extractors in the garden of Eden either. :p
