Good Music We Are Missing Out On

You know if you depend on radio to expose you to new music, you may or may not be surprized at how much good quality music you would be missing out on.

There are so many underrated artists and songs that just get slept on because the don' t have big a record deal, so you cant hear there music on radio or TV, because they are independent and they are so good lyrically that if a mainstream artist were to cover their songs it would be huge.

I just heard some new music, well its not new because it came out last year but i am just finding out about it so its new to me and based on what i have heard my current top 10 list will drastically change lol.

Its like how i found out about Regina Spektor last year because they played her song on Greys Anatomy, and i thought hey who is this incredible new artist, but she wasn't a new artist she had 2 albums out already, but she was kinda underground.

So then it makes you wonder how much other music have i been missing out on? Sometimes its just by chance you come across some of this music.

Most songs nowadays are so generic, they just singing about the same things but you have artists out there that are trying to change things up in clever ways but aren't getting mainstream exposure.

It just really sucks is all i am saying.

The only radio I listen to is NPR, but its just talk. Internet radio and a blog called The Hype Machine is how I find new music.

I'll check out itunes because its so true about radio, they literally play the same songs over and over, unless you request something and sometimes they say they don't have it.

A funny thing just happened, i just found out about a song today and i loved it right away and then about 30 minutes later a friend calls me and we are talking but i notice that he is playing the same song i just found out about in his background.

So i ask him if thats the radio and he says no its a CD. So then i was like, what the hell? why didn't you tell me about her from last year? Why would you keep her music secret, all for yourself lol.

Its all good though.

There's only one radio station I listen to, and it’s the only independent station in Wellington, they play everything the big one don’t, lots of NZ stuff, Funk, House, but no disco, new stuff, (they were playing Ami Winehouse a long time before she was heard on other stations), old stuff, to much stuff to list that you may never hear elsewhere Radio Active

Also there make all there own ads, to fit in with the station so the ads don’t sound lame, like others stations.

Here in Seattle the only radio station that's really worth listening to is 90.3 KEXP. They play ALL kinds of music depending on the time and most of it is really good stuff that they just won't play in mainstream shit. Used to listen to The End but, even alternative music got repetitive after a while.

If you're interested in new music, the last place you should look is commercial radio. Not because they're evil or anti-new music, but because they're not aiming for you. At least 95% of folks out there don't give a damn about music, really. They just want something on in the background. And nothing makes people change the station quicker than unfamiliar music. (No, not even commercials!) So instead, you get to hear James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" or Pearl Jam's "Better Man" yet again. Because people don't change the station when those come on.

dont really listen to the radio station here in Hampton/Norfolk where i live. i know when i was here before...i could bet on hearing the same song several times during the day, if it was a hit or being pushed as one. I rarely seem to have even heard songs from up and coming, worthwhile artists. It would be a better world if they played more the stuff that deserves to get played.

Thankfully Melbourne has some of the best community radio in the world, so if you get sick of Beyonce and the latest Idol kids, you can flick the dial a notch and get some "underground" stuff, it's not all great but there's some gold there for sure.

Over here in the UK, both the BBC and Channel 4 websites have areas where unsigned artists can upload their music for anyone to hear. I also find that MySpace is a good source of new music - apart from mainstream artists, there are thousands of music pages of regular acts that play the pub and club circuits!

104.5 or 102.9 is ok here for this area. But yeah i dont listen to anywhere near as much as i used to.

Mainstream music is "bottom of the barrel" crap. I hate it all........ there's nothing original, nobody's really a "stand out" artist that really grabs my attention and all of the lyrics are so cliche' it makes me want to puke.

The only method I've used in the last 7 to 8 years of finding new music is the internet. During the days of "free for all" mp3 downloads, there was this program called AudioGalaxy and it was the greatest thing I had ever found until it was shut down by the RIAA. However, I never used it for the wrong reasons. I downloaded music and listened to see if I liked it. If I did, I went out and purchased the CDs. If I didn't like it, it was promptlly deleted.

A lot of people don't have the same taste for music that I do. I like Chill, Trance, New Age, Celtic, and good old thumpin' dance music that really has a good beat and rhythm.

My favorites are:

Enigma, Delerium, Enya, Michael Cretu (anything he does is good, he's the man behind Enigma), Balligomingo, Moby, Mythos, Atylantos, Deep Forest, Amethystium, Beautiful World, Afro Celt Sound System, X Cultures, I discovered Atylantos by complete accident 5 years ago and it's awesome (It's an Italian Opera.... don't puke, it's really great).

So, I guess my tastes are a little more strange than the norm. I don't know if there's anyone else out there like me, except for my partner, of course..... ;-)

Yes, her Harem CD is quite good and not common by any means. Her biggest hit from it is called "Beautiful Day".
