Good Old Day's ??? Where & When

Damm, JUB is great place to read, relax, and to share your thoughts...

With that said, I would like to purpose a question to those fellow jubbers out there that remember when $5.00 or even $10.00 could or would allow you to paint the town red? Where & When did we lose the so call good old days?

Now, I am not talking about drinking and celabrating all night long but, going out for a night of entertainment and fun.


For instance, I can remember in the late 70's going to Disco Clubs dancing, eating, and having a great time for under five dollars still having money left over to make a .05 cent phone call home for older brother to pick me up.

I have never been able to paint the town on just $5 or $10 or the present equivalent. I think the 'good old days' for me was the late Roaring 90's. I was in my late 20's, was well into my career and independence. Plus my partner and I had just gotten together.

Someday someone will post, "Do you remember when you could paint the town red for < $300, and STILL have $7.50 for a beer?"

My good old days are right now! Back when I coulda been having more fun, I was clueless.

I grew up just north of New York City in the 70's. $5.00 would get you a slice and a small soda, that's it. We certainly couldn't paint anything any color for $5.00. I do remember gas being $.37 a gallon tho.

I think one "good old days" is when you were 10-12 years old, no matter what the decade. Then another is around 18-20. Come to think of it, right around 30 were some of my goodest-oldest days.

Yes at 13 and younger I attended clubs and skate rings from 76 thru 81 during this time disco was hot then not so hot... as a child early to preteen I can remember going to these clubs and dancing alnight and was able to eat and drink also (all this for under five dollars). My family lived in lower florida at the time in and arround Naples/Ft Myers.

As I grew older I can recall mid eightys attending barn dances and river parties... these were mostly family/friends gathering at river for grand old time but such things today seem to focus more on substance abuse and drinking (these events took place in Alabama, my home state).

I can remember keeping a dime in my shoe under the sole for emergency incase I needed to phone home...I also remember when you could go into a 7-11 and buy a bag full of candy (real penny candy) without taking out a loan. I started smoking at the ripe ole age of 12, and yes still smoke today... seems like back then I paid .55 for a pack of smokes not totally sure on that as I was in the habbit of taking my brothers cigarettes mosty.

However what got me thinking about those days long gone was reading an article about prices of theater tickets here where I live, I have not been to see an actual movie since God only knows when, so I just about flipped out when I saw the prices for adverage movie was $8.50 to 11.00 per person.

But as for as I know painting the town red is an old expression meaning to have a great time and it seems to me that today most everything costs an arm or a leg compare to what it was when I was growing up .

I just was wondering if I was along in my thought pattern or if other recall days long gone.

I think it depends. I've had various sorts of "nights out" - from sitting at home with some crackers and soda and good friends, to exclusive velvet-roped clubs with bottle service. The former are the ones I tend to remember and cherish the most.
