It always pleases me to hear news stories of high flying professional people - doctors in particular - giving up a lucrative private practice, at least temporarily, to help the poor, the needy, the dispossessed and disenfranchised.

In India, a train - provided free by the National Railways - has been fitted out as a travelling hospital, and moves around the very poorest parts of the country, fixing up cleft lips and other disfigurements, and polio-related disablilities, to people otherwise too poor to afford them and who, without this service, would be leading terrible lives.

You can read about it here, or hear a news report here.

Good stuff.

Very interesting. I am really rooting for India because its a democracy. I believe it is capable of being a tremendous asset in the world for good as it develops.

Wonderful story! Karma is a very powerful thing, whether you believe in it or not. Those who unselfishly sacrfice their time and effort to bring beauty and such caring to those who needs them most, will in the end get the best of luck that they deserve. Whether or not they know who you really are or your name, but your actions will be forever grateful in their hearts.

We should all start helping others and expecting nothing in return, for the ultimate gift in return is satisfaction.

One of the affects I am hoping of Slumdog Millionaire's success is greater attention to the issues of poverty and underdevelopment, including the attention of wealthy Indians. There are some incredibly wealthy Indians who live like princes. I would love to hear that some portion of the movie's profits will go toward education, for example.
