Today, after Google's IO conference, they officially launched a new commercial for their Chrome web browser. In a bold move, though, instead of making the commercial about the browser, they made it about the power of the web and of Dan Savage's 'It Gets Better' Project. Its a mix of clips from videos, comments on videos, and showing how quickly the message spread. It really speaks for itself.

So what do you all think? Initially, my reaction was that I don't like something like this being used to get people to download software. But after watching it a few times, I don't think that was Google's intention. With the pop-culture figures woven into it, and the powerful messages (especially at the end), I think Google is trying to push the message of those videos, and a tolerant social message, beyond their normal audience. I'm not a huge fan of Google, but its a bold step from them, and one that certainly will have an impact.

Thoughts?

I saw it on the James Durbin show tonight.

Its very moving.

I think its not offensive in anyway to make a commercial... I don't think it was taking advantage of anyone.

Have been seeing it for a which now

Love it

so google want us to use chrome.
Which browser is better ? Firefox or chrome or the new explorer ?

I really don't think Google believes that spreading a message of support for gays is going to get people to download Chrome. I think Google understands that the tsunami of hatred being directed at us by Fox News, the Christian right, and the Republican Party makes America a miserable place to live.

And that's not good for business.

The ad is a small step, but encouraging. Google, Microsoft, Apple, IBM, and most of America's larger companies understand something that Republicans do not: That hatred is not a good business model.

Intolerance is anti-productive, bigotry suppresses creativity, and bashing your own people does not promote your cause.

I watched the video where it appeared in your post, i.e. before reading the bottom paragraphs.

I LOVED the ad. Sure one can be cynical, but I have to really think hard about it before I can begin to consider the possibility that it might be just jumping on a bandwagon. Chrome isn't even part of it until the last moments and then only in writing as an afterthought. The commercial is great.

Thanks for posting it. I had not seen it before, and it made my day. :band:(!)

I'd like some comment on this question. I use Firefox, but an IT person recommended I switch to Google Chrome (which is already installed on my computers). Has anyone here tried both and have a preference?

First, I like the commercial and it is hopeful to get to a lot more people who have not seen the it gets better video.
Now I use Firefox and will never go back to Explorer. Well, only for some HTML work I do. I need to see if it works in IE.
I have had Chrome installed on my PC for quite awhile now and I don't believe I have ever looked at it. My partner talked me into DL it. Will try it out.

Well, I'm here on Chrome and it doesn't get better.
I like my hotmail acct to be my home page and Chrome insists that hotmail be a separate page. I put the URL for it in the Chrome addy space and there is no way to send. I cannot get hotmail to open as a home page.
guh, I don't like it.
Altho it does appear to have some HTML editor appearance to it.

Nope. I'm back on firefox and think I will ditch Chrome. You have to open a gmail acct and then go throu Hellen Highwater to get you hotmail to work in Chrome. Or so it looks like to me.

I recently upgraded Firefox to 4.0 and was underwhelmed. It really was not as different as everyone hyped. It's still a good browser but from the hype I was expecting a whole new look. It's very much the same. Never tried Chrome.

Why can't someone invent a browser that makes sense. Like instead of having any menus at all at the top that you have to move your mouse to, instead just right click anywhere on the screen to access any menu option you need. I recently got a Firefox add-on that does this with the bookmarks menu, and it makes so much sense.

What is that add-on you talk about. I may like that.
As to the rest of your post. I find that IE changed to appear like Firefox.
But I really like it, altho it is now 4.0.1 with some changes that is hard to get used to. But I will.

but back to the real point which is a great ad by a giant company about being gay and it being not only ok but good

been seeing these ads during NBA playoff coverage - which has been great btw - anyone else watching?

these ads give me goosebumps

and make me want to be gay .......... a better gay

it's a game changer IMO

That's great they show it during the playoffs. It gets to a lot of people who just may be prejudiced.
