I personally love Google, and I dont mind what they are doing, they are upfront and straight with people on privacy, and they are still a good company.

Everyone Loves Google, Until It’s Too Big

By RANDALL STROSS
Published: February 21, 2009

THE popularity of Google’s search engine in the United States just grows and grows. In the past three years, its market share gains have even been accelerating, making some people wonder whether the company will eventually obliterate what remains of its competition in search.

Certainly, antitrust scrutiny is a growing worry at the Googleplex. Last year, the company abandoned a proposed advertising pact with Yahoo when the Justice Department said it would file an antitrust lawsuit to block the deal. Last week, a small Web site operator, TradeComet.com, filed an antitrust suit against Google, accusing it of unfairly manipulating its advertising system to harm a potential competitor.

Its sounds like google is the wal mart of search. Hopefully it treats its employees better than wal mart

It works. I don't care.

From what I have seen Google treats is employees very well, not sure if that is true though.

Google has gotten the power it has because it makes QUALITY products, and give them out for free. Can't say the same about Wal Mart.

Lol people love to destroy what they helped grow.

Google is the best. Let it be.

i dont have a problem with the size of it, it's the girth that has me concerned.

In the future a big part of technology will be information handling and searching. People will eventually major in searching or simlar related topics.

People's concern with Google has to do with the fact that Google has saved every search that it's done since it's inception. It's capacity is second only to the governments. It is now viable in court to use your internet searches as evidence against you in court.

So if you do a search on google to figure out the best way to kill someone and if that someone happens to die (unrelated to you). You will be prime suspect and they can and will use your internet searches against you, even though you didn't commit the crime.

hopefully they practice some sort of ethics in their business with what they do with your information, because they already track and keep everything you do.

Google anonymizes most of it's searches, and beyond that, they don't share their search results with the government or any entity easily. Google is really the only company fighting the government on selling search results for "national security".

Google has been very responsible with their information, and only uses it for research and development of more technologies, and better, more targeted ads.

cuil may be shit (and yes, I admit that), but it's only going to get better as more and more people use it; that's why I'm using it.

Until it gets too big and powerful and someone starts a thread like this about it.

I don't understand us as a people - we want things to be bigger, better, faster and more powerful and then bitch about it when we get it.

What next, Myspace going to sue facebook?

You are aware that when you're logged in to Google, they can keep track of your search terms?

The problem with Google is that they try to be everything. You can use Google Docs to write documents and save them online, you have their gMail, Picasa, Webspace... and people carelessly use that all. If your account is hacked, all your privacy is revealed.

Plus, they are totally in favour of free speech and don't give a fuck about victims. If you want to have something deleted, you need to come up with a proof and an official C&D letter, which they will make public.

people tend to destroy what is growing big and out of their control. They will start to focus on the negative side, and project negative images out there. Oh well, it's life.

I personally like Google. Hope they do well and keep their ethics.

Um... isn't this a good thing?

Something like what deleted? Do you mean like something which comes up in a Google search, or do you mena a blog on a Google site or a mail message or what?

They lost their ethics long ago.

Um... isn't this a good thing?
Free speech also means you can pick on weak humans that are already quite low on the social ladder who can't defend themselves. Too many people abuse free speech.

Everywhere on Google's services. If, for example, you see defamatory content about someone else on Blogger and report it, they won't delete it.

No, the victim itself has to find out about the content (hard to do if you're not internet-savvy), send in a cease & desist letter (hard to do if you're not a U.S.A. citizen), then wait for Google's reaction.

If the objective content could be found through the search results and had to be removed after the C&D letter, they'll post a link at the bottom to Chillingeffects.org, with the letter openly readable (=invasion of privacy).

So even if you get to remove private information about you or a copyright infringement, Google still backstabs you :grrr:

^They should rather aim it at Apple and their stupid, smug iPhone.

/unnecessary rant

Google has never lost site of their main business, which is advertising and search. Thats why the google homepage isnt cluttered with all of their services.

And for any account at any place, if your account is hacked, your fucked. And Google is straightforward that they catalog everything you do. It isn't a secret or surprise to anyone who uses a Google service. It's how they target their ads to you. Constantly improve their search algorithm, and create new and better services for you.

I wonder if you realize every search engine (all the major ones at least) catalog all of your search terms and functions and collects data on you. And those other search functions don't fight the government when they come a knocking for info on citizens. Google does and has in the past.
