I don't disagree with the last line at all, AS EXTREME as it is.

In many respects, they (those atop the power structure) do hate this planet, or at least think that the people who inhabit it are entirely expendable.

Here's the last line:

"It's tempting to feel sorry for them until we remember their objective is to destroy the planet and our democracy."

It's not their objective. It would be a correct statement to say their objective is to control the planet etc., but to say it's their objective confuses what they want with the results of their policies. That they can't see that those are the results does not make those results their intent, it just demonstrates how out of touch with reality they are.
