Analysis: SC gov's disappearance a problem for GOP
By BETH FOUHY – 29 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) — South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's mysterious disappearance from his state, topped with misinformation from his staff about where he had gone and what he'd been doing, is the latest sign that Republican governors — once thought to be President Obama's most credible adversaries — haven't quite lived up to their billing.

I actually like Gov. Sanford. He is not part of the kooky right wing, which is why the kooky right wing in SC is attacking him. But this is indeed strange, especially because he chose father's day weekend to run away. I suspect there are marital difficulties because he did not inform his wife of his plans.

So some day he might like to become president. Can we expect him to one day just to take off for few days?

Apparently the governor is really weird.

He is apparently incredibly cheap despite the fact he is a millonaire. He likes to dig holes to relax, and a little girl died because of it...allegedly.

Yep, Governor Sanford is the latest Republican to admit to having an affair. The staff apparently made up the story that he was hiking, when in reality he was caught flying back from Argentina, visiting his mistress.

Chalk up another one for the Party of God and Family Values.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford says he has been having an affair with a woman from Argentina and will resign as head of the Republican Governors Association.

The married father of four emotionally apologized to his wife, staff and others at a news conference after returning Wednesday from a trip to Argentina that followed a dayslong absence. He staff had said the Republican was hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

Mr. Sanford says he met the woman about eight years ago and that it became romantic about a year ago. He says his wife and family have known about it for the past five months.

All the pugs saying how much of a "man" he was by standing up in front of the cameras and admitting it.
Bullshit!

It just breaks my heart when a Republican strays from his holy and unbreakable bonds of matrimony. Of course, this adulterer is also against gay marriage because it, you know, threatens traditional marriage.

I don't know if "traditional" is even the right word, anymore. Let's just say that it threatens "Opposite Marriage".

I was wondering the same thing but he did refer to his mistress by female pronouns "she" and her." He also referred to his mistress being separated from her husband and having kids.

I actually feel a bit sad for all of us because we don't need all of these so-called leaders letting us down right now.

Its going to be awfully awkward for McCain to go before the cameras now to talk about Iran because reporters will ask about his own adultery.

Has this been independently corroborated?

Are we 100% sure his "mistress" isn't a man?

Doesn't anybody think it's weird that he had so many hangups about having a security detail around him?* (Most of) The Republicans are always defending state surveillance (what the rest of us call invasion of privacy) on the grounds that, "If you don't have anything to hide, you have nothing to worry about."

*I'm experiencing flashbacks to disgraced former-NY governor Eliot Spitzer's habit of slipping out away from his security detail (in order to meet with his hookers).

I did finally hear him use the pronoun "she" in his press conference, but it was a long time coming. For now I'll assume it was probably indeed a woman, but I wouldn't risk any assets to make a bet that it wasn't a guy instead.

You know what I love: These cheated-on spouses who never leave their cheating, elected politican hubbies. Evidently, the living is so high, they figure they could never have a life afterward that's particularly good.

I'm in South Carolina and I can assure you that Sanford is VERY much the Republican in Chief here. True he doesnt have many Republican friends and there's no Love-loss in the party. But don't be fooled, he's been supporting The Republican party on the Local,State and national level for the last 7yrs.

South Carolinians arent surprised by the news of an affair. We wrote him off as "odd" & "strange" years ago. He works the Governorship like a 9 to 5 job. He stays in the office, does not reach out to the public. He fights publicly with Jim Clyburn...The most we've ever seen him in the last 7yrs was after Obama's win...Months ago he made it his mission to be against the Obama administration and made sure the State new where he stood.

Other than the Stimulus & the affair he's been the "Invisible" Governor...Now he decides to come out of his shell in the worst way possible...And it's hard to believe he just turned 49..He looked really old today...

The reporter misheard him. He said he "wanted to do someone exotic.

Altho there seems to be a lot going around about "she" "her" etc I will hold off on my previous statement until further news comes out. You're right, this could very well be a man.

Thanks for the heads up.

I'm guessing Sanford will now be no one's friend, especially the Republicans.

I'm surprised that no one is saying that this is his personal business. Remember the defense for Bill Clinton.

My point is that cheating on your wife should not be just politics -- the honor of a marriage and your personal integrity is at stake. Shame on you Gov. and others that cheat on your spouses.
