In a whispering campaign not ready to go public, some senior Republicans are so anxious about the state of the GOP race they are actually considering the unheard of: a scenario that would lead to another candidate entering the Republican primary race, and potentially an open convention.

If you read the article, it appears that the GOP leadership is very concerned about the rise of Rick Santorum, who seems to be solely focusing on social issues these past several days ... which is only damaging him amongst Women and Independents.

They see his electability a major problem in the General Election ... something we have discussed for a while now.

Evangelicals do it every time. I remember being told some months ago that "Evangelical support in the GOP is over-rated". Not so. They are actually quite influential and it is to the detriment of their own party's chances. They are just too blind and wrapped up in their own little bubble to realize it.

I hope Santorum continue doing what he's doing and being the Champion of Biblical values. Because if that carries him to the nomination, then Evangelicals are going to learn a tough lesson in the General Election, as they get a hard dose of reality.

.... then again, they are a stubborn group, so the possibility exists that they learn nothing and will keep try ... try ... and trying again.

I brought up an interesting assertion in another thread in that the marriage between the GOP and Evangelical voters is not going to last going forward. The reason being that Evangelicals are moving further to the Right in their views, as the rest of the country moves to the Left. I think eventually the GOP is going to have to make a choice in whether to kick these voters to the curb and focus on the Fiscal Conservatives ... or whether they want to keep losing elections because of Evangelicals.

So ... this talk of a new candidate emerging ...

Run Sarah ... Run!!!!

They should be in panic mode, because their party has become captive of a theocratic, ignorant hateful base. Moderates, intellectuals and the sane have been crowded out of any meaningful role in the party. One wonders if the party as it is will be able to survive.

It may take some time for them to reconstruct, but I think if they want to survive, they are going to have to kick Evangelicals to the curb. These "Values Voters" have become such a detriment to the Party, that a significant amount of Moderates in the Party have left it altogether. Obviously, they have other, more prominent priorities and are tired of seeing Evangelicals pandered to. Who can blame them?

I think the future of the GOP should be in Fiscal Responsibility, and Social "Values" essentially should have no part of the platform. When you think about it, why should Social Values have a role in a Party Platform?

Kicking Evangelicals to the curb would hurt them significantly in the short term, but I frankly think it is the best Long Term investment they can make, if they want to survive.

But the struggle we see the GOP going through today is simply reflective of its bigger problem ... trying to find it's identity and making the difficult decision of the Party's leadership to commit to moving forward with a new one.

Over the past several days I've been hearing the name of Jeb Bush. Lordy I hope they were talking out of their ass.
I just wouldn't put it past them to choose him.

:rotflmao:

Look what they're offering.... Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich & Mitt Romney. It's no wonder why they're looking for someone else. And God help us all if another Bush gets in the White House.

Like many have said before, the republican party has been taken over by the fringe. Aligning themselves with these christian values people was solely for votes and they're now the parasite that's killing them. But if they didn't have this group, where would their votes come from?

Evangelical voters wouldn't head to the Democratic side so they would probably start something on their own which would eventually divide the republican party in half. It would take a decade of more for republicans to gain any resemblance of power again.

IMO, the problem is not so much who is running but the need to get Congress back to being a functioning body (both the Senate and the House) where compromise is respected, not avoided. We have the worst Congress in history and the polls continually prove it. People hate Congress.

If Obama gets re-elected and we keep the same dysfunctional Congress, it will simply be 4 more years of gridlock.

If a republican wins the WH and we keep the current Congress, this country will fall to fascism and the extreme "values" ideologues will set this country back 75 years.

I think that is why the REAL GOP heavyweights are staying in the sidelines and waiting for 2016. People like Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Paul Ryan and Chris Christie KNOW we have a dysfunctional Congress right now and KNOW that the GOP has lost its way. Until unity is restored, they would suffer a severe handicap. The GOP currently has no "superstars" running. The far right extremists hate Romeny and the republican moderates hate Santorum...and they all think Paul is nuts. Gingrich is simply an unelectable sideshow to wake up their base.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

The GOP is funny and brings a smile to our face.

BOOM !!

The big Republican issue is that Santorum (and before him Gingrich) will provide quite a bullseye target for House Dems running against Repubs - that "association" will be used like a sledgehammer

Romney may not beat Obama but he's not a problem in Congressional elections

The Repubs had dreams of:

winning the WH
taking back the Senate
keeping the House

they need desperately to keep one of the above alive or they will be up shit's creek *

* as will the american people

This what the party has to offer to voters. I see Sarah Palin taking the convention hostage. She will demand they nonimate her and Michelle Bachmann as the candidates who save the country.

Perhaps the ancient Aztecs were right!

I can hear it now: Palin-Bachman overdrive 2012... before its too late! :help:

IMO, this is why Obama's ratings are going up now. Americans see what the GOP put out as candidates and they do not want any of that and see Obama as "the lesser of two evils".

I have to feel a little bad for Jeb Bush... if he had any other last name in the world, he'd probably be the runaway front-runner.

party elders aside, I don't really see a world in which a heretofore unknown candidate emerges. do you really think Romney, Santorum, or Gingrich would put their egos aside and pledge their delegates to someone who hasn't campaigned a day in the race? it would be a debacle.

a more likely scenario would be Gingrich encouraging his delegates to vote for Romney... the key factor there is Sheldon Addelson, Newt's sugar daddy. he does not want Santorum to win the race and is propping up Newt purely to split the vote.

I could also see a Romney/Santorum ticket emerge.

Despite who Newt's sugar daddy is, I think there is legitimate dislike between Santorum, Romney, and Newt. The only pair I can see working together is Newt and Santorum. I think Santorum has major, legitimate dislike for Romney ... and Newt is in the same boat.

At this rate, between the divide between Santorum and Romney ... a brokered convention would be something to truly look forward to. If Santorum decisively sweeps the South (including Texas, which he will win), as well as the rest of the Bible Belt ... while Romney takes the coasts (albeit by slim margin) ... there is a possibility that may happen. Romney losing Michigan (as he is losing to Santorum at the moment ... along with Arizona) would be a major blow to his image and campaign.

As far as Jeb Bush, there is no way in Hell he is going to run now ... or in 2016. He knows he is unelectable on his last name, alone.

There is zero chance another Bush will make it to the White House.

And I agree ... a Palin/Bachmann ticket is a dream come true for Dems. I had to LOL at the image above.

I don't see Romney losing MI or AZ, people are really starting to hear Santorum's wacky positions now and they are not liking what they are hearing.

I stand corrected. Santorum is down by 4 in Arizona (within the margin of error), but is definitely winning in Michigan at the moment.

For the next two contests:
Georgia

Ohio

... Romney is also losing in both states. He is losing Ohio to Santorum and Georgia to Gingrich.
