Gosh,how mean are you guys!

I've been over at Empty Closets for about five years. And when I started there, I resolved to treat everyone there as an adult. Because they were (mainly) there for information and support, about what most would term "adult things", so it made sense to treat them as such. Yes, sometimes they lack the knowledge and experience if an adult, but I can fill them in the same way I'd fill in an adult. And nearly every time, the ECers respond in kind. They're appreciative of the knowledge and of the respect I afford them.

Occasionally, I'll critique an ECer's behavior, either on the board or in his/her story where he's asking for advice. And nce in a great while, I'll get the response "Hey, I'm just a teenager/kid." Which to me is them saying "You can't expect anything more from me." It's perhaps telling that I get this from 17-year-olds far more often than 13-year-olds. They've already learned to try play both sides of the street. They want and expect the freedoms of an adult without the responsibilities. And I think that's a dangerous precedent to set, especially on EC. HIV won't give you backsies because of your age. The guy you Skyped with last night isn't required to go easy on you because you're still in high school. If you're going to do adult things, you'd best be prepared for adult responsibilities.

Maybe that's where JUB parts company. it's just an internet messageboard. Of course, Ench IS trying to fuck his professor. And if anyone is wondering why he's continuing towards that goal despite our protestations to the contrary, I'd say your comments provide the best (but not only) demonstration why.

We don't think he's capable of any better.
And, in fact, that's precisely what JUB apparently finds so appealing about him.

He's "refreshing". He's got a "youthful innocence". And hot legs, too. He's like JUB's pool boy. Simple (in all senses of the word) eye-candy for us to indulgently smile at while he engages in his "youthful antics". And maybe we can fantasize about blowing him once in a while, too. And like most "pets", he's given a long leash. We shoudn't punish him for his misdeeds - he doesn't know any better. The mod team has suggested that "maybe he'll learn" from this infraction, but I'm guessing JUB as a whole is hoping he doesn't. I mean, nobody wants a smart pool boy, do they?

You'd listen to the advice/opinions, consider them, post your rebuttals, consider the further responses and do whatever you'd decided to.

You may sulk a little, but you wouldn't flounce out with a 'fuck you' type swish of the hair because you didn't like the grown-up's replies.

Enchanted is young and is love-struck by a professor that he believes is showing him attention. I would say that we have all ignored the advice of our elders (and often our peers) when our dick is doing the thinking for us - and my issue with Enchanted is not that he is doing what he's doing. After all, when it all goes 'tits up', as these kind of things tend to, we will still be here to offer words of wisdom, advice, support and comfort - it's one of the things that we're rather good at here. Admittedly, he may have to deal with a modicum of 'we told you so', but nevertheless some of us will be here for him. The issue is that disrespecting other members has always been a pet hate of mine. There's enough disrespect in the 'real' world, and I'm not happy for someone to use the good nature of members here, only to then abuse it with a 'fuck-you' response simply because they feel they're being misunderstood, or can't deal with the advice from people with more life experience who are genuinely trying to be helpful.

I always see the good in people rather than the bad, and there are members within this thread who are still here because of the 'benefit of doubt' that has been afforded them in the past. The door is certainly open for Enchanted to become one of them, and if all goes well with his professor, I'm sure we'll want all the details!

That in fact is one of the few admissible reactions in threads like this. Everything can be filed under encouragement/love, undisguised happy jealousy (the "you lucky dog!" response), and disguised jealousy and/or hatred. Either you're on board with the love coming my way, or else seeing all the love coming my way makes you seethe with jealousy, and then you haters start hating.

Posted something in way of critique? Hating. Jealous.
Said something condescending? So hating. So jealous.
Didn't post at all? Can't even tip their hand as to their hate and jealousy.

There is no indifference, no mild cause for concern, no cautious advice, no ill-considered words posted before wandering off to another thread. It's all about the OP, the love, the hate, and the jealousy. And the last two are but sour versions of the first. So it's really just a love fest, when all is said and done, isn't it?

I just think he's operating with a different set of ideas of what mean is, and I think this is a great place for someone to work it out.

What a man with wisdom and age considers wise advice is often considered raining on one's parade to other less evolved younger men. In youth there is an innocence of dreaming. To WANT a thing so badly that to interfere with the mental fantasy, often the only place where a fresh out of the closet kid has allowed himself to accept his sexuality, is considered cruelty.

The problem here is that to most people, giving honest feedback is a kindness. But there are people, and kids always go through it, that think if you are their friend, you will support their goals, no matter how unrealistic, just because it means something to them.
