Ok...been looking at LCD's for years and never thought prices were down to where i would get one. I was browsing for Doctor Who DVDs yesterday and i stumbled across 4 "open box" deals at the local electronics store.

Sony Bravia 40" LCD, 120 mhz model number is 40Z4100. i wasn't going to get it, but the store was offering 0% finance for a year if you opened and used their credit card. so i did it!

original price was $2299, they were on sale for $1699 and then the open box deal i got it for $997. i really like it!

i'm just curious as to what you guys think?

wow. what a great deal. i researched lcd tvs for ages before buying my samsung 46 incher. i think as long as the picture looks good to you and you are happy with the price you paid you should be good to go. nothin like feeling like you got ripped on a big ticket item to ruin it for you each time you use the thing. enjoy that tv, and wait till u see porn on it!

I bought a 42" Bravia 1080p resolution a little over a year ago from BJ's (similar to Sam's Club/Costco). I think it was $1299 new, never opened.

Not top of Consumer Reports, but decent reviews. We like. Also bought Blu-Ray player -- animated are fantastic.

And, my son loved plugging in - even using RGB/Analog, to use it as a "monitor" - especially while playing Warcraft --
I have light setting set to Theatre - not quite as bright, easier on the eyes, a sense of more depth to image.

We don't have cable - have invested in videos forever. We bought a directional Digital table top antenna from Radio Shack for around $50 - have been watching broadcast digital for over a year, don't even look at the analog that are going away. PBS station has 3(4) digital stations, abc/cw = 2, NBC affiliate has weather attached.

Oh, yeah. I went downstairs and resurrected my stereo speakers, then my wife bought me Bose2 pair ($70-80 range) to plug in -- Some day I may run wires -- or pop for wireless for home theatre for surround sound. Expands the home theatre experience without spending super big bucks. If we crank, we can almost pretend we're in real surround sound/"earthquake".

A little bit can add a lot. I'm happy with my set up. We don't need a $1/2M set up like some audio/videophile magazines talk about for "true home theatres". We're simple folk.

My mate got a 40" HDTV in 2007, costed him about 2 grand. Its great for games I tell ya :)

Placez,
I don't have my PC plugged into the TV all that often, but I suspect that, come next weekend, A PC will be using it as a "monitor" a whole lot more frequently!

My son and his GF are moving back from DC as he graduates w/ his MA and doesn't have an immediate job - adjunct teaching PT in the Fall right now.

So, I suspect he and his sisters will be using warcraft and the game cube and other PC games a lot in the ensuing evenings.

Don't knock it till you've tried it. As everything moves to 720P/1080p, digital is the only game in town, prices will continue to come down.

IT's a great experience, even if it is a "tad" indulgent!

Try it, you'll like it - if you can swing it.

just realized this weekend i wasn't utilizing it correctly. i had my VGA cable plugged right into the TV. today i got a DMI to HDMI cable. looks better! ;) although now i have to figure out what sorta of audio cable i need to go from the PC to the TV now.

Dear Protector of the Tardis:

My Audio hook-up is male micro-pin for laptop earphone connector to dual Red/White RCA/"F" Plugs Male plugged into the left hand side facing Bravia.

You have the advantage of the HDMI hook-up, which my Inspiron w/ BluRAY Read/Write doesn't have, so you get true Digital/1080p capability.

You can get a decent length 12-25' Audio cable at Radio Shack, if you don't find one someplace else.

Dear Protector of the Tardis:
It's been a month and a half since your last post -- did you find the needed audio cables?

How are your digital experiences, a month+ on?

Did you re-scan your broadcast TV stations after the analog turn off last weekend?

oh yes! your post was very helpful, but i didn't see it until today. went to wal mart and got the cable and it works great!

i still love my TV. haven't rescanned channels, because i don't actually watch much tv. just dvds and now streaming video from my PC. yeah for season 1 of the original doctor who! god susan was a whinny little thing...

Yes, she was. I've got the dvd set, too.

It's too bad the old films didn't archive well.

I don't have all of the doctor.
We"tuned in" during the Tom Baker years on PBS in our younger years.
Then it went to Sci-Fi -- we don't have cable - We've invested in tapes/dvds over the years instead.

Now that he's back on PBS, we've been enjoying David and his predeseesor.

So, We've seen Doctors 1-5, skip ahead to around 9 or so.
They've dons some interesting things to the decor of the interior of the Tardis over the years.

It's too bad Tom was such a pain in the ass about doing the 5 Doctors edition - he's just signed off, was tired. I guess I understand - he spent a long time as the Doctor.

If the seasons weren't so damned expensive to buy . . . Oh well, food on the table, clothes for the kids, or DVD's od Dr. Who?
It's a tough call some days . . .

i did not like doctor 6 (collin baker) and not much likely for doctor 7 (sylvester mccoy). so honestly i don't think you missed anything. the 8th docotor (paul mcgan) is only a Fox movie. i've never seen it in the stores, but ...if you google you might find it on the web. :)

Sounde like I haven't missed much. I think I've seen Collin Baker - certainly no Tom! Syvester McCoy also sounds familiar.

Who was only on about 1 season? Collin? I didn't know Fox had done a movie, either!

Have you read Jim Butcher - Harry Dresen series or the Codex Alera Series? Not time lords by any stretch, but I've enjoyed them.

Dresden made one year of Sci-Fi - did a fairlyl decent job with it. Too bad it got the ax. I do have that DVD, though.

Any idea how long these things live and what kind of repair bills you're looking at if/when they die? Is it even feasible to repair them?
