I think I've had a bout of gout. I've had a sore big toe joint last week in my left foot. I heard about the use of cherries and how they could be beneficial, and, I bought some cherry jam. It seems to have done the trick in combination with ibuprofen to relieve pain and swelling. Oddly enough, after it got better, the pain occured in exactly the same place on the other foot. I've been having cherry jam all week, and finished two bottles, lol. I'm now pain free. ..|

Hmmmm ... I've been experiencing that same kind of "thing". But ... I have not been convinced that it's Gout (the build up of uric acid crystals) that I've been having. And ... I hadn't heard of the "Cherry Thing". But, it does make some sense. I'll have to try that, and see if it makes any difference!

THANKS! for the info.!! (group)

Keep smilin'!!(*8*)
Chaz ;)

From time to time I had extreme sensitivity in one or both big toes. It was always following an intake of vitamin C or a multivitamin containing vitamin C. As soon as I stop the gout symptoms go away.

Had the same problem. Pain in my large toe joint on my left foot. I talked to a clerk at the health food store and they suggested concentrated tart cherry tablets. It worked! I have movement in that joint and pain free. Once in a while I will take a few tablets if I feel my joint start to tighten up.

It worked for me. At first I was thinking this isn't going to work, but it did.

Gout usually develops after a number of years of buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints and surrounding tissues. Symptoms include:

* Warmth, pain, swelling, and extreme tenderness in a joint, usually a big toe joint. This symptom is called podagra.
* Pain that starts during the night and is so intense that even light pressure from a sheet is intolerable.
* Rapid increase in discomfort, lasting for some hours of the night and then easing during the next few days.
* As the gout attack subsides, the skin around the affected joint may peel and feel itchy.

Other symptoms may include:

* Very red or purplish skin around the affected joint, which may appear to be infected.
* Fever.
* Limited movement in the affected joint.

Symptoms of gout vary.

* Symptoms may occur after an illness or surgery.
* Some people may not experience gout as many painful attacks but rather develop chronic gout. Chronic gout in older adults may be less painful and can be confused with other forms of arthritis.
* Gout may first appear as nodules (tophi) on the hands, elbows, or ears. There may be no classic symptoms of a gout attack.

By the time you experience the symptoms of a gout attack, uric acid has been building up in your blood, and uric acid deposits have been forming on one or more of your joints.

The big toe joint is most commonly affected. But the joints of the feet, ankles, knees, wrists, fingers, and elbows may also be involved. Inflammation of the fluid sacs (bursae) that cushion tissues may develop, particularly in the elbow (olecranon bursitis) and knee (prepatellar bursitis).

There are many other conditions with symptoms similar to gout.

I am taking Allipuronal I know this is misspelled, but I have tried cherries when there in season, it works also ine time in the early 90's I had a gout attack my big left toe was red, sollwen I wanted to cut it off. But It does falre up a little from time to time but, not as much now that I am taking medsfor it, it's called also the rich mans deaise, don't drink any alcohal it will make it worst, which I found out the hard way..

Two years ago, I also had gout and tried many ways of treatment including cherry jam, but it didn't help. Thus, I had a consultation with the doctor who advised me to have a specific diet. In case it may be useful for somebody, here is almost the same diet for gout treatment as I had. It really works..| After such treatment, I recognized that nutrition plays much more important rola than most people think.

I've had gout for years. Since I started taking allopurinol daily, that has diminished the number of flare-ups. When I do have an occasional bout, Tramadol or Colchicine does the trick.
