Can someone PLEASE tell me what the difference is between Song Of The Year and Record Of The Year? The same song won both this year. I've never understood this.

Record of the year goes to the artists and producers while the song of the year goes to the songwriters.

And congratulations to the Dixie Chicks....I don't even like country and I love that song.

I was going to ask why were the Chicks accepting the record of the year award given its a producers award; but then i thought about some more and realized that its a collabrative effort. A producer is nothing without the artist, vice versa.

I also like the lyrics to that song, "Not Ready To Make Nice." It seems like the type of song that could get you through a good relationship gone back.

I have never been a hardcore fan of the Chick but i have been known to like a few of their songs.

They went 5/5 tonight.

The Academy loved them.

And they also love everything Beyonce.

How do they manage to fill the best new artist category every year?

Where do these people come from?

Are they going to depend on American Idol in future lol

There was only one American Idol nominated, and she was the first one to win.

Don't forget Kelly won Best New Artist & Best Female Pop Vocal last year.
It's crazy how these Idol winners are becoming actual successes!

Oh, I know. I meant as far as Best New Artist.

Actually Kelly wasnt even nominated for best new artist last year, she did however win 2 grammys beating Mariah in a couple categories.

2006: Won - Best Female Pop Vocal Performance - "Since U Been Gone"
2006: Won - Best Pop Vocal Album - Breakaway

How is it that after an album is nominated in one year, a song from that album can be nominated the next year? That shouldnt be?

"Don't Forget About Us" was nominated, but That Alcum was from 2005.

I guess that means that Beyonce will win another grammy for "Irreplaceable" next year.

Also,

I thought that the grammy they hold when they win is just a prop and that the real grammys are mailed to the artistst? In the press room though they all had their grammys.

I think the rule is that the song from that album cannot be nominated in one of the general categories. For instance, Kelly Clarkson's Because of You was out too late for last year's Grammys. But her ALBUM was. So Because of You could've been nominated in Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, but not anything else like Song of the Year, Record of the Year.

So if "Irreplaceable" is nominated, it will be for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.

It has to do with when songs and albums are released. This made a lot more sense back when songs and albums were issued only as physical items, rather than for download. I know U2 was up for "Beautiful Day" on year and the All You Can't Leave Behind the following year. Just the way it works.

And as far as "record" and "song", think of it this way. The "record" award goes for the performance, the musician's version that you hear on the radio. The "song" award goes for the song, as written as sheet music. At least, that's the easiest way for me to keep it straight.

The "Best New Artist" WTF this year was The Fray - up for best pop performance and best rock performance, but not Best New Artist?
