Grand Theft Auto 5 sells $800 million on day 1

You would be shocked to hear how guys talk when online. During a game, there can be 16 guys connected online.
I heard a 12 year old British kid say n_gger and I said "do you know the meaning of that word?" He didn't and he was just repeating what he has heard online.

I have played Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty and I think what is said online is more damaging to people than any animation they see during the game. I didn't start the thread with this in mind but later today, I will play online and I'll let you know what was being said.

I'm guessing but I would say about 20-35% of the gamers playing are underage and are not suppose to be playing this game or Call of Duty.

The mass murderer this week was hooked on violent video games. He played them for hours a day.

There is no magic one item solution to end violence .. doing away with violent games would be a start. No one will suffer if they are banned -- which I realize will never happen.

No they wouldn't, because there's absolutely no hard evidence of any causation whatsoever, and because multi-millions of people play violent video games, including in every single first world country with almost no mass violence problem whatsoever, such as Japan.

I don't think Jack is saying what you think he's saying. I don't think he's saying violent games make people violent.

Just like everything else, I suspect that violent games is a tiny part of the cause of violence. But as people have pointed out, violence has existed for as long as there's been anything alive... or dead.

Your suspicion isn't valid considering what I posted above.

You think this is limited to gaming? Go read the comments section in youtube. Go read comment exchanges on facebook. Are both of those now contributors to violence?

This is as stupid as people who say violent movies are training tools for murderers.

To the OP : Yes and I am still really excited about this game, going to visit my ex-housemate and her bf this week hopefully just to play the game. I pretty much expected good sales number given the hype surrounding it even before release (and let's not forget how many people pre-ordered them, and gotta give those marketing people props for coming out with the idea of limited edition gifts). Having visited some of the big international game companies during school trips, the bosses of the companies pretty much said the same thing - The game industry is making big bucks nowadays and the movies on the other hand not as much anymore. From app games to console games you name it. I think I might need to shift my priority from move to games now. All of my classmates are going into game companies instead of Tv/ movie companies.

Personally, I love GTA and all the inside jokes and general piss-taking which the games have been chock-full of since forever. The technical achievements make it even more impressive.

Looking immensely forward the predicted PC port of the game in the next few months.

I have to agree with some of the posters here that mentioned violence themed games are not the main cause/influence of violence among kids. I have even met kids who never played video games (although rare in this generation) behaving just as aggressive or bratty.

Back when I actively play online games (where majority of the community are young teenagers) they swear just as much and use profanity. And these games are not just limited to violence themed games, as I mostly play fantasy type rpgs. My ex-housemate, who mostly play dancing type games swore or use just as much profanity.

Let's not forget game arcade players too. I don't exactly like it when people miss a few steps on the dancing machine and get called "fucking NOub".

Sample. But there is racing as swell. The game has a huge city and the gameplay is limitless. Its not just about killing people. I made this quick video that just happens to show the police. Personally, I like using the grande launcher to blow things up.

Yeah, and porn is a training ground for those who want to rape people.

Am I the only person who knows people who planned their year's vacation around this game? I'm covering for at least two people here who are spending a week (or two weeks) doing nothing but playing GTA V and eating pizza. :)

Lex

Watching porn often makes you want to have sex and people use it to masturbate. There is a correlation.

With rape? No, no there is not. Also sexual desire exists regardless of porn. So you're kinda shooting your really poor assertion here in the foot.

Sorry, but I'll never understand how killing someone in a game, tv show, or movie is entertainment or adds anything of value life.

If a person gets enjoyment out of that, I think they might get enjoyment out of torturing puppies and cats.

You are welcome to your own personal taste about what is or isn't good entertainment. The problem is when you believe you should get to decide for everyone else and start proposing bans based on absolutely no evidence of anything.

It's an intelligent well-done game. I'm upset I have such limited time to play it, but I will be picking up my preorder soon.

It's entertainment. And it's crafted very well just as a movie or album can be crafted well.

I personally like violent video games and I have a Cat who I love dearly, I also have worked with animals in the past. I took care of 20+ puppies and sometimes kittens during my shift. Please keep reaching.

You're honestly a tool of the media if you really believe entertainment controls any one human being, whether you like said entertainment or not.

For most of you then there shouldn't be any concern about people shooting guns for recreation.

I have to admit that I didn't like that vid at all, I find it a bit unsettling. It makes casually gunning people down way too realistic and pointless. :(

It's a long way from the settlement/strategy-type games I play where men are just these tiny little identical soldiers and you were fighting battles etc. As for the fantasy games I only killed people in defence after being attacked first, and they were mostly creatures anyway. And it was never as reality-based a scenario as that vid.

The only time I ever played GTA was once or twice years ago at my cousin's house I think. I was a pacifist. (o)

I didn't want to shoot anyone so I just raced around the city in a car. The single death I was responsible for was the one time when I accidentally knocked somebody over.

Are you a troll?

What you're seeing, MakeDigital, is what we live with in CE&P on a daily basis.

If only it were trolling.

I like sim/strat games too. Ever play Rome Total War? When you conquer a province in that game, the game asks if you want to enslave the population, exterminate it, or peacefully occupy it. But I certainly don't suddenly gain a sympathy with the final solution or anything else because I play that game.

I DO shoot guns for recreation.

And then...they go out and rape people? No, they stay home and jerk off.

Nope but I played Age of Empires II and III and Age of Mythology, and before that Command & Conquer and a few other lesser-known ones. Plus the amazingly wonderful Elder Scrolls III. ..|

So yeah I'm sure I've killed many many 'people' during my time but like I say it was in an escapist fantasy or battle scenario, and nothing so life-like as ordinary innocent people shot dead with a rifle or shotgun. Just not my thing, I find it way too unsettling and uncomfortable.
