Greatest Female rock star of all time?

no question in my mind, janis joplin. she shocked the country back in the 60s with her 'big balls' blues when bubble gum music was the norm. she was in the 60s youth culture what james dean was in the 50s. love her to this day and i compare all blues singers to her.

Tori Amos is pretty high up there, Janis Joplin too, Bjork, she's a goddess, one of the most under appreciated voices in rock. P.J Harvey, also a rock goddess no one even comes to close to her talent in recent years. in my humble opinion. Madonna, although a complete media whore, is a rock icon or sorts and deserves credit where it's due for all she's done for women in the music industry. Skin from Skunk Anansie, probably not one of the greats but defiantely an unbelievably talented singer. Shirley Manson is a great performer but voice wise, she's not that great. Alanis Morisette, unique voice and unique talent, also what i'd consider a goddess. Annie Lennox is a queen in my opinion, I don't know why she seems to have dissappeared on us as I could listen to her voice until the cows come home.

The Dixie Chicks

(hey, they are country-rock now)

Although I wouldn't argue they are the greatest of all time, 2 others I like that I haven't seen mentioned are Bif Naked and Alana Myles.

Ooh yeah, Alannah Myles is crazy good too, Terri Nunn as well.

Huh, never actually heard of Terri Nunn until I just googled her haha. I've heard of a few songs and the band Berlin -- yeah, she's got a good voice for sure.

Don't get me started on Alannah Myles though! (spelled it wrong earlier, oops). I loved her debut album, the whole cd kicks all kinds of ass. It's too bad she didn't come along earlier because she really is one of the best female vocalists I've heard, IMO.

Yeah man, Bif rocks. "I love myself today" is another awesome one.

For what it's worth, I would have been embarrassed to call myself a wrestling fan had anyone bothered to see that movie. Ready to Rumble licked it up (I'm assuming the video you posted was part of the soundtrack).

Id go with Avril Lavigne, she hasnt been aroung longest but shes great!

Pat Benatar and Joan Jett for me. Skin has an amazing voice as well.

I'll get behind a riot shield as I say that I reckon Mariah Carey would er... rock at rock if she actually gave it a go and quit fannying about with her semi-urban nonsense.

Patti Smith, Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar, Janis Joplin, Johnette (Concrete Blonde) Napolitano, Kate Bush, Toni Childs, and, for her influence on many of them, Joni Mitchell.....all IMHO, of course. Have had the pleasure of seeing most of them in concert, and they are amazing! (I have a soft spot for Joan Jett, Aimee Mann, and Shirly Manson, as well...and the Wilson sisters, but their stuff has been so uneven over the years). Has anyone heard the Bangles' stuff? The less commercial (non-Susanna Hoffs leads) tracks are pretty cool.

1. Janis Joplin
2. Dilana Smith (to me she is! ;))
3. Tina Turner
4. Dolores (The Cranberries)
5. Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes)
6. Pat Benatar
7. Ann Wilson (Heart)
8. Gwen Stefani (No Doubt)
9. Tracy Chapman

No I think Mariah would kick ass as a rocker if she tried. Especially nowadays because she's got a raspier, hoarser voice. I could see her decked out in leather pants and high heels. She did actually do a cover of Def Leppard's 'bringin on the heartbreak', although it exactly done in a 'rock chick' sense. Dave Navarro did the music video version of the guitar solo though!
