Greatest Female Singer Of All Time?

Pat Benatar may be the one of the best female ROCK singers out there - there aren't too many - but I don't know if I'd put her in the best singers of all time category.

And I can't put Mariah in the running. The pipes don't matter if you use them to sing dross.

Lex

She was a classically trained opera singer before her rock years. She did more that just Rock. Here's some of her Jazz.

Although not a personal favorite, I think many in the opera community would agree that it was Callas

From Tosca, one of her great roles

And Ella, Barbra, Judy, Aretha and Linda Ronstadt.

Another favorite of mine but she seems to be obscure to most people is Dinah Washington.

I was going to nominate Dinah, but you beat me to it. :-)

I thought True Love was more blues-pop-standards than jazz, personally. And she acquitted herself well, but I didn't think it was all that brilliant.

Barbra Streisand

Liza Minelli

Patti Lupone

Maria Callas

Diane Damrau

Jessye Norman

Diana Krall

and

Ella Fitzgerald

It's really hard to identify a 'greatest' female vocalist...there are soooo many.

A lot of great suggestions... and a couple that have not been suggested:

Tracy Chapman

Sarah McLachlan

I could listen to Sarah forever. What an angelic voice.

Include Eva Cassidy as well:

I will go with Mariah Carey, followed by Celine Dion, followed by Amy Lee from Evanescence, followed by pre-lying crack-head Whitney Houston.

Well I'll have to go with Whitney Houston before her crack addiction. Mariah Carey her voice is still the best for hip hop pop. Tina Turner, for rock. I thinking Whitney Houston, "I will always love you"

Whitney Houston. Didn't her song "I Will Always Love You", stay on the chart for the most week.

Whitney's great, Used to love Mariah but her voice is no where near the way it used to be.

I LUVS me some Whitney, but I HATED that song.

I love Whitney, I love the song, but Dolly's version is SO much better.

I would say Donna Summer is the best. She marginalizes that backup singer wannabe on No More Tears.

I also love Debbie Harry

Not the best singer by far, but the best performer would be Madonna:

And Kylie:
