Well that looks gross. The grits I make don't look like that. They should be thicker and that is way too much butter. Some cheddar melted on top is good too.

whoops... I hit the submit button... ;)

Like many Southern foods, Piglet, it's all in the way they are cooked.

Grits can be greasy, nasty things or they can be absolutely delicious. They don't have much of a flavor on their own, but mixed with red-eye gravy or cheddar cheese and they are tasty...

I haven't had them in ages, but I'll always try them, given the chance.

I love grits - and they should not look like that. Next time try going to a small private breakfast place and order them - not at a chain restaurant.

I've never had Cream of Wheat.

Try a big, steaming bowl today.....

Whoa...my grits do not look that disgusting. Even I wouldn't eat that, lol. I don't put much butter in them at all, my grits look like white cream of wheat, which I also like..Now I see why my best friend said he hated grits, he must've seen these, lmao

I love grits. Denny's is not where you start if you want to experiment.

Grits are part of my ideal breakfast. They're great. My mom taught me to mash up your eggs with your grits to give the grits flavor and the eggs bite. The grits in that picture are nasty, though.

What the hell are grits? More info please.

Yasssssssss! I love to mash up some cheese-flavored scrambled eggs in my grits. As a kid I used to put a tiny scoop of sugar in my grits. Of course that was before I discovered

Sir Ron must have been a Southerner who was kidnapped at birth and brought to Western New York, because I adore grits and eat them 2-3 times each week.

They are a wonderfully fast, hot and satisfying breakfast! When I am not teaching, I cook the traditional grits.

When I am working, I make the Quaker Instant Grits, which come in a variety of flavors including plain, butter flavor, cheese flavor, and even red-eye gravy! After adding the boiling water to them, I pop them in the microwave oven for a minute. They cook to the consistency of the slow cooked ones. A small pat of margarine on the plain ones adds to their flavor, but I don't think I'd want them swimming in butter like in that picture.

When I was in the South, I always hit a supermarket to see if I can get the Martha White brand grits, which were actually Southern made. I checked their website, and it appears that they don't make them anymore. Quaker is what's mainly available in the North, and the flavored kinds are always in the grocery department of Wal-Mart.

By the way, I have tried the Wal-Mart brand grits ( Great Value), and they are good too!

Ordering grits out is a mixed bag...Some smaller restaurants do cook them fresh. Chains can vary. When I have ordered them at Waffle House on weekends, they have been cooked. On weekdays, they do the instant ones in the microwave like I do at home.

Denny's also uses the instant grits in the microwave too. But depending on the particular restaurant, the serving size ranges from a smaller, dinner salad-sized bowl to a larger, soup sized bowl, when serving it as a part of the Build-Your-Own-Grand-Slam Breakfast.

If you haven't tried grits before, they are somewhat like Cream of Wheat (which I also love), but made from corn, and a little coarser in texture.

Grits are delicious! They don't need to be swimming in butter like that picture, though.

My favorite is cheese grits with garlic.

I only thought Yankees (who are brave enough to try them) put sugar on their grits.

A little salt, pepper, and butter is all that's needed.

For those that have no idea what grits are, think of hominy.

With butter and sugar, yummy.
Mmmmmm yummy! Me, too! With fried eggs and a slab of ham. I've never cooked it, myself, and Grandmother (who's from Texas) doesn't...so I've only had it in diners. I'd give the Denny's a try if I saw it on the menu.

Incidentally, grits are made of the same substance as CornNuts (which is: hominy...inedible feed corn soaked and softened in lye then washed clean and dried like beans).

:drool:Well, Piglet, grits are delicious. They have a corn flavor to them. I had a job in Florida and had them often. Better than Cream of Wheat or oatmeal. Don't put milk on them, just butter and sugar. Yummie:-)

MMMmmm - makes me want to go to Denny's for their Grand Slam Breakfast!! But it's 11:30 at night here and the closest one is 40 miles away!! :(

That looks pretty fuckign horrendous. And also, as a Canadian, I would say you can't name dinner after a political party.

Still though, I will try anything once (except boobies).

^ I don't know. Oatmeal is mighty tasty.

I have instant oatmeal several time a week. Yes, very tasty. If I could find instant grits I have them instead. I'm just lazy.

I'm going to hunt down every one of you who puts sugar on your grits, and I'm gonna smack you silly. Grits are supposed to be served salty, with butter, cheese, gravy, or shrimp. NEVER put sugar on grits. If you want a sweet hot cereal, eat cream of wheat.
