A way back in the early 70's, my gym coach made us pull the leg strap to our jock out through the leg of our gym shorts where he could see it; and, then let it snap back into place

Similar in my high school. You'd have to pull out the front of your shorts waistband so that coach could check that you were strapped up.

Two birds of a feather man, I hated it too...so much so that I just always "forgot" to bring my gym clothes those days; I actually failed PE one year and then had to take it in summer school! Although it was funny...it was actually a bit fun in summer school because we got to do other things like tennis vs. during the regular year. Not that I was any good at that either (like you, I sucked at sports and hated it all); I think it was maybe because of the camaraderie of being stuck there with others like me.

Anyway, I digress. So what was the point of this "jockstrap check"? Sounds to me like those coaches had a jockstrap fetish of their own! We weren't required to wear straps, why were you?

Back in the day there was a belief that jockstraps helped to prevent hernias or other groin injury. Therefore, jockstraps were mandatory. I loved wearing a jock, and seeing all my classmates strapped. After gym showers were also mandatory. This was back in the 60s/70s when guys had no problem being naked around other guys. How I managed to avoid a boner in a open shower room full of naked guys, I'll never know.
