I was required to have one for 10th grade Phys Ed (I can't recall what I may have worn in 7th thru 9th grades, but am sure not a jockstrap). I of course was dependent upon my Mom to drive me to the store (I'm not sure we even knew what store to go visit to buy one - we went to a sporting goods store). I got more than 1 (per instructions of stuff to buy for school).
