I'm living in South Africa, in Cape Town. This is a long post - sorry.

We didn't have to shower after gym at school until my last year at HS when we got two new instructors who made it mandatory. Still, when we did, it was a big issue since none of us had seen a naked dude since grade school because the local grade school had a swimming pool and the sister high school didn't. Both were fairly new schools; most of the guys had been at school with each other from first grade through senior/matric year.

Throughout my undergrad at the university, locker room nudity was fairly prevalent, presumably thanks to people from other schools who had to shower after gym! Guys would come in and shower, no problem. The university had gang showers - two of them, each with room for about 8 people, stuck behind a wall in the locker room.

After undergrad, I joined a gym. The first gym - a big chain of gyms here in .za - nudity across all ages was quite common at first (1998 ); by the time I moved to another chain of gyms in November 2004, it had become much more rare amongst the younger guys and less common (but still frequent) amongst the older guys. This gym had semi-private showers - basically, the shower room was not at all visible from the locker room, and it had two rows of showers facing each other. There were partitions in between each shower, but no doors except for one on the end shower in each row. There was a wet area visible from the locker room, and most people towelled off in there; that was also the entrance to the showers (right) and the steam room and pool (left).

My current gym since 2004 has private showers, not visible from the locker room and some distance away down the corridor. Even with private showers, most people don't shower and a large number of people who do shower do so in their undies. Almost everyone under 35 who does shower there dresses and undresses under a towel, even to strip to their boxers Every now and then you'll see a hig-school or varsity kid who's not at all shy, but they are rare. As usual, the older guys are far more relaxed.

At first I thought it might have to do with national/military service - prior to 1992, all .za boys were required to do 1 year in the military straight after school unless they were going to varsity, in which case you did it after that. My year was the first year where it was optional. However, I know several guys who went to the army who are locker-room shy, so perhaps it isn't that.

It seems the older guys, regardless of culture, don't mind nudity at all. Younger guys - you see more white guys naked than black/mixed race/East Asian/Indian guys. I've been to several different branches of both gyms during my time with them and it seems much the same across the different parts of the city. I work for the University now and I am finishing a PhD there - the locker rooms have no naked people in there at all these days; at least, not the last several times I've been there.

I think the whole "who gets naked in the locker room anymore" thing really depends on just exactly which part of the country, which town, which gym, or even which social group or situation you are in. For instance, I grew up in the South in the 80's, and at my high school NOBODY ever completely stripped out of their shorts and put on a jock, showered, etc. Recently I moved to the Great Lakes area, and I see college-age guys doing it all the time - walking around from the hot tub to the sauna to the lockers without even wrapping the towel around themselves.

One interesting situation that I have noticed at my local gym involves guys who are on college varsity athletic teams. The local university sells gym memberships to anyone living in the area, and its the cheapest one around by far, so I go there. Anyway, I have seen guys on the various sports teams enthusiastically shower together and goof off and chitchat bareass in the locker room after practice, but when they are training on their own in the off season, come to the gym in their workout clothes and leave without ever changing. I guess when they are in "team mode" the whole communal nakedness thing is just further male-bonding and morale building.

After the game most every guy is sweatier then hell and generally the same situation happens after each game. Most of the stadiums we skate at have group showers.
