I shouldn't gloat, really I shouldn't, I know it's cruel, but I love these stories of religious leaders getting their hand caught in the homo cookie jar.:p

(11-02) 15:34 PST Colorado Springs, Colo. (AP) --

The leader of the influential National Association of Evangelicals, a vocal opponent of the drive for same-sex marriage, resigned Thursday after being accused of paying for sex with a man.

The Rev. Ted Haggard also stepped aside as head of his 14,000-member New Life Church while a church panel investigates, saying he could "not continue to minister under the cloud created by the accusations."

The investigation came after a 49-year-old man told a Denver radio station that Haggard paid him to have sex.

Haggard, a married father of five, denied the allegations in an interview with KUSA-TV late Wednesday: "Never had a gay relationship with anybody, and I'm steady with my wife, I'm faithful to my wife."

In a written statement, Haggard said: "I am voluntarily stepping aside from leadership so that the overseer process can be allowed to proceed with integrity. I hope to be able to discuss this matter in more detail at a later date. In the interim, I will seek both spiritual advice and guidance."

Mike Jones, 49, told The Associated Press that Haggard paid him to have sex nearly every month for three years. His allegations were first aired on KHOW-AM in Denver.

Jones said that he had advertised himself as an escort on the Internet and that a man who called himself Art contacted him. Jones said he later saw the man on television identified as Haggard.

He said that he last had sex with Haggard in August and that he did not warn him before making his allegations this week.

Jones said he has voice mail messages from Haggard, as well as an envelope he said Haggard used to mail him cash, though he declined to make any of it available to the AP.

"There's some stuff on there (the voice mails) that's pretty damning," he said.

Richard Cizik, vice president for government affairs for the evangelicals association, expressed shock.

"Is this something I can imagine of Ted Haggard? No," he said.

Carolyn Haggard, spokeswoman for the New Life Church, said a four-member church panel will investigate the allegations. She did not identify the board members.

"This is really routine when any sort of situation like this arises, so we're prepared," she said. "The church is going to continue to serve and be welcoming to our community. That's a priority."

I was just watching Jesus Camp, a few hours ago. Ted Haggart was in it, towards the end. I don't know how he managed to stay in the closet for so long. He set my gaydar off right away.

Meh ... it's too convenient. Oldest political trick in the book, planting a damning allegation just before an election. I don't believe it, although I wish I could.

They will find way to blame his ills on Clinton's or he had drug problem.

you should absolutely gloat...nothing wrong with being happy when a sexual hypocrite falls down. on his face. with his ass in the air.

Was he running for something?

I do feel very sorry for his wife and five children. It is also sad to see a mans life ruined at such a young age.

Wat he did was wrong, but I think his accuser is also wrong.Personly I don't think any one should out another person,no matter what the circumstances. When anyone comes out ,it should on his or her's own terms.

True the Rev is two faced and a hippocrite. He also must be truly hurting and miserable trying to live a straight life and knowing he is a closeted gay man.

The escort's reason for coming out with the information at this time, also doesn't ring true to my ears. Can writing a book be in his future?

No, Haggard's not running for office, but he has close ties with politically active conservative Christian organizations such as Focus on the Family and has, for years, been leading the loudest religious forces opposing gay rights in Colorado and nationwide. He's not as politically influential as Dobson, but his religious stance on acceptance of homosexuality has shaped the political actions of a huge number of people, both constituents and political leaders, including George W. Bush.

I've changed my mind since I posted in this thread last. Haggard changed his story to admitting to buying meth and having a massage from Mike Jones. He's been lying and is still lying about parts of the story for which no proof is on the table yet. There's truth behind all of it, including that he had sex with men.

I actually feel kind of sorry for Haggard. He's a classic deeply repressed, deeply closeted , homophobic homosexual.

I feel most sorry for the people who, as a friend of mine put very eloquently, were the sheep following a bad shepherd. I know many people who belong to his church. It's a huge shock.

I have mixed emotions about this type of thing. I feel sorry for his wife and childen who he lied to. They are innocent ones in the scandal. Part of me feels sorry for him but I think he's a fucking asshole as well.

I see it as a simple act of justice. Someone who so fervently opposes gays and marriage equality while having these trysts on the side absolutely deserved to have this happen.

I do feel sorry for his wife and kids, but bad things happen to everyone.

I don't believe in outing people either, but in this instance, when he is endangering the rights of people he is taking advantage of, then he deserves it...:grrr::grrr:
