Sucks when you have to learn it the hard way. I felt like I was living dangerously by using my 4 year old laptop without having back up much of anything. Finally got an external drive on black friday last year. Just in time too because a month later my hard drive failed.

That sucks, dude.

Thanks for the wake-up call, though.

I haven't been backing-up lately like I should.

^ Maybe he secretly did. Wouldn't that be a bitch.

Gutted.

As long as you got what you wanted from it, it's all good. ..|
External FTW. :-)

i lost my hard drive, but for different reasons. my stepdad fucked up my computer.

he was drunk, and my mom was using it, and apparently he didnt think she was paying him any attention, so he slammed the laptop shut. it did something to my hard drive to the point where it couldnt be saved. i lost everything and i dont know if there is a way to get it back...

a) You don't necessarily have to wipe a whole HD just because of Spyware.

b) Backup:
- browser bookmarks
- emails
- fonts
(- Windows themes)
- private, personal data (which should always be backed up on another partition than the system one)
- music/movies

I suppose my question should be in the tech section but I would be grateful if one of you computer wizards would explain what we should be doing to safeguard the contents of our computers.

I copy all my photographs to CD-ROMs and back up every single file I have created onto a USB key.

But what about my OutLook Express, my bookmarks and the settings should I have backups for these and if the answer is yes, how?

Back up often and safe a copy off site (your office, locker, parents, etc.) in case of a disaster at home (fire, flood, etc.) It is cheap to do with external hard drives.

How important is your data, music, pictures, etc???
